DeBrincat has NO incentive to sign an extension with any team. He has a $9 million qualifying offer next year which he can just sign and then walk to ufa status the year after in what should be a more favorable free agent market. And given the realities of how things work then you have to make the decision on turning around to trade him or risk letting him walk for nothing next year. So you only really get him for 1 year. It would be the Taylor Hall situation just on a tighter window and giving up a bigger asset.Oh so Cat can't resign ? Or the player you draft can't demand a trade? Or the player you draft can't just be a Zacha 2.0? I'd take my chances with Cat for 2 years than deal with another Zacha for 8.
There is a huge difference between the #2 pick and #7. You can’t give up the #2 pick for a risk like that. Yes there is risk the pick doesn’t work, but long term it is less a risk that the DeBrincat situation.
