I do agree with what you said about going for Johnny Hockey instead of trading away an prime asset for the Catman.

I think people really underestimate the value 2+Holtz can bring on their ELCs. Even if you think Cat’s a bit better it’s better to have those other guys and Johnny

DeBrincat is a young, top-flight finisher. I understand the concern about what assets he costs and how tall he is, but I don't get what's not to like otherwise.

team needs nhl talent proven nhl talent. if they keep the pick and the kid busts it will seriously hurt the franchise. at this point in the rebuild we need more solid known players on the ice not more question marks.

Yea I’m on team keep the pick and sign Johnny. I hope the Habs take Wright now lol. Fitz will not pass up on Slaf haha
Like someone else said that's great in theory but you can't know if Gaudreau would even sign here before FA.

I can see a number of teams looking to offer with Chicago. Ottawa (seem almost desperate to not want to pick at all, nevermind top 10), Columbus (two #1s, one in top 10), Buffalo (top 10).

I thought this was an interesting possibility:

You could read that as either Chicago would be more likely to trade DeBrincat for #2 if they were getting Wright or NJ would be more likely to trade #2 if it was Wright instead of Slaf.

The more I think about this the more my intuition tells me that if Slaf is picked by the Habs we should draft Nemec instead.
Not only does Nemec fill a desperate position of need but he is not really that much of a reach at pick #2.
How much more of an impact can Wright have over Nemec?
We have stood by patiently waiting to build this team the right way and I feel as if drafting Wright deviates from our plan. He is not a bad fit, he is just not the right fit over Nemec imo.
The team had no trouble scoring last season. Our defense and crappy goaltending is what lost us games.
I lean Jiricek myself but I agree with the overall sentiment.

Better to take that risk. It doesn’t work then oh well shift to something else if you want. Go after Tkachuk instead

I think DeBrincat's skill translates to playing with a good C on other teams, but his production is significantly aided by playing with Kane. So you have to play risk/reward/temper just a bit initially as it may take time for the Hughes combination with him to develop and take off.

I hate that we live in this space right now

No way I'd go 6 years. 4 max, would prefer 3 with slightly higher AAV.

I don't see another team coming in that high with that term but Ken Holland is lurking out there, sooo.

There’s also a benefit to extending a younger RFA Debrincat than signing a UFA gaudreau. Could be difference between

Gaudreau - $11m x 7

Debrincat - $6.4m x 1 then $9m x 8

So two more years all at a cheaper AAV, that’s not nothing

Pick 37 + Holtz + 2023 1st (lotto protected) for debrincat? is that crazy

No, it's not crazy, though Chicago fans may tell you they don't want it. I don't think Cat gets as much as Eichel and that's just below what Eichel got in my opinion (holtz = Krebs, both got future firsts, each get a second...the difference it Tuch).

But if the biggest thing for Chicago is getting into the first tonight, I"m not sure where they would put that on the rankings of trade offers.

He can hope for that. I wonder if teams pushback and point to Grubauer failing after leaving and Colorado still winning with Kuemper playing poorly to drive that down. Kuemper can obviously counter with how good he was in Arizona. Interesting negotiations coming up
