if johnny wants to play at/near home he doesn't have many choices. I really doubt he would want to play on the island so that leaves us and the flyers. so he can't have his cake and eat it too (meaning he will leave money on table)

Colorado now only has two picks in this draft - a 6th and a 7th
Circa 2015 we would pump up that 6th rounder to be the next coming of Petr Sykora
Hold off on DeBrincat. Wait and see on Johhny instead. I know that pick #2 will have to go probably if we trade for Debrincat ,but I would rather keep assets and try for Johnny.
DeBrincat fits the age profile better and his contract will like avoid becoming a liability for the duration. Gaudreau you know going into it that you're probably going to have to deal with 2-3 bad years on the end of it. IMO, they've moved from the maximizing value stage of a rebuild to the putting a team together stage. We have a lot of assets, now it's time to build a winner you can keep together for a while. I think DeBrincat lets you do that more than Gaudreau does, even if Gaudreau is the better and more "free" player.

It's all smoke and mirrors. Fitz has been repeating the same stuff since the season has ended. Debrincat doesn't fit the player mould, I'll be shocked if we acquire him. I can see us trading someone like Johnsson/Kuok for some goalie negotiation rights tho.

I’d rather take the chance and miss than give up significant assets and throw away the chance

This is where having the free agency after the draft screws the Devils in this situation, but it is what it is at this point with the NHL.

I prefer Johnny to Cat.
It's tough .. I'm thinking that if Fitz pulls the trigger on the DeBrincat trade it's because he wasn't going to be able to get Johnny Hockey locked down. If I knew for a fact that I could get Johnny Hockey inked I would probably go that route and keep all the assets. Fitz surely has a better feel for the entire situation.

I mean no one should be saying it because Fox was never playing here. He was forcing he way to the Rangers no matter what

My only counter would be that Fox would've brought back picks, pretty sure he was traded for 2 2nds from CAR, no? Still recouping the value for said picks. But Bastian was still ok for that pick even if you want more out of a second rounder.

I can’t believe I’ve gotten to a point where I’m praying Montreal doesn’t take Slaf and he’s ours lol. If he’s ours then I could see Fitz holding off on a trade. If he’s gone then he might pull the trigger

That’s fair but not something I’d go crazy over. I honestly don’t need much more out of 2nd rounder than what Bastian’s done. It’d be nice but he’s much better than average 2nd rounders

I'm curious about the remark from Kaplan about having a deal for a goalie in place. Who would it be? I think Colorado acquiring Georgiev on the heels of that report from Kaplan is a bit of intriguing timing.

No problems moving #2 for Debrincat. I am curious how much more has to be given though. That's where I start to get a little nervous.
If they ask for anything more, tell them to suck it. Fitz is in a massive position of strength with our draft picks, prospect pool and cap space. I’m on the Gaudreau train, even though he’s older, I think he’ll age well and will just cost us cap space.

she said we were inquiring about Georgiev so she could have meant that

Yeah, if you can compare an average 2nd rounder to Bastian you're thrilled.

As far as I'm concerned, we shouldn't have to offer too much more because I don't think that the market supports it. There was talk that Philly wouldn't even put #5 on the table, so going above and beyond #2 seems like you're kind of bidding against yourself. If they are not open to trading him for that, I think you walk and let them revisit it down the line.

I mean I think the thing that's a side of caution with DeBrincat is the years of control, I think Fitz said that was a big thing if he was moving off the pick. DeBrincat can flip his leverage in about 2 years with his contract coming up.

My assumption is that if the devils trade for him, the contract is worked out if not official (similar to Seth Jones last year). I'm not sure I'm overly comfortable with that, but I can't think of a time where that really came back to bite someone, so I imagine they would be comfortable with whatever negligible risk that poses.
