No, it's not crazy, though Chicago fans may tell you they don't want it. I don't think Cat gets as much as Eichel and that's just below what Eichel got in my opinion (holtz = Krebs, both got future firsts, each get a second...the difference it Tuch).

But if the biggest thing for Chicago is getting into the first tonight, I"m not sure where they would put that on the rankings of trade offers.
i mean i think our 37th pick could be used in a combo to move into the 1st easily

There’s also a benefit to extending a younger RFA Debrincat than signing a UFA gaudreau. Could be difference between

Gaudreau - $11m x 7

Debrincat - $6.4m x 1 then $9m x 8

So two more years all at a cheaper AAV, that’s not nothing

In vacuum sure it's not nothing. We're not in a vacuum though. When you consider you're also giving up like 2OA and Holtz to do it then that changes things.

pretty sure if we ever traded bratt, this fanbase would kill fitz

Honestly the only way I do it is if we sign Johnny and Bratt drags on throughout the summer and won't commit long term and wants a short deal. Then move him for like Tkachuk or Debrincat. Obviously that never happens for a multitude of reasons but that's basically the scenario I'd envision being ok with doing it.

I thought this was an interesting possibility:

Ya I’d Slaf is there at 2 just keep the damn pick.
As sexy as Debrincat and Hughes would be together … I don’t want to pay the assets it would take to get him . The whole getting “heavier “ to play against kinda looks like that goes to shit if we don’t draft Slaf and add The Cat.

Im hoping for us to draft Slaf , trade for Puljujarvi. Possibly a goalie if one pops up.

Slaf meeting with the Habs owner:

Makes me wonder if the Habs owner wants Wright but his FO wants Slaf, but to sign off on Slaf he wants to meet him first.

This wasn't supposed to happen today so I wouldn't read into it at all. It was supposed to be a few days ago but his flight got delayed and they rescheduled. They met with Wright yesterday.

Yes , we lose a lot of young cost controlled players that we will eventually need to offset the rest of the core and their cap hits.
Not sure if we’d be too top heavy if we had Gaudreau plus another 8-9 mil player added.
I guess we have a lot of cost controlled guys to use in the bottom 6.
I think we are better off having at least one more top 6 guy on a ELC .
I’d like to add some “heavier / interior / hard skill/ defensively sound forwards “

I knew he was supposed to meet with the Habs, but the owner too? Unless Molson is heavy involved in their decision making and has met with other prospects as well.

if you want the absolute most out of hughes then you get him a player like cat. its as simple as that if he comes here cat would probably be the first 50 goal scorer for the devils and jack is the first 100pt player.

if in theory this trade hinges on wright being there at 2 then i can definitely see the trade being very SIMPLE a 1for1

Phone all the sporting goods stores / places where they make up jerseys and bribe them if anyone from the Habs habe had a Slaf jersey with 22 on it made up recently.
Im kidding , I’m sure they have had multiple options made up already with numerous players names in them or just no name at all and just the number 22 on it .

We might be top heavy but at least for the next few years it won't be an issue due to the amount of contributing ELCs. That offsets the big deals. There will likely come a point down the line where decisions will have to be made but I'd take the risk and let that be a then problem.

Yeah meeting with the owner is a pretty big head fake if the Habs are still trying to keep teams guessing.

Eh never mind the above then :P It definitely has the effect of adding to the intrigue though

Definitely. First overall pick in MTL with a first year GM. Got to believe Molson has at least one hand on the steering wheel.

Be nice if this was a 2012 situation. Their FO wanted Murray but Katz wanted Yak so they went Yak.

I’m torn on a Debrincat trade….

I feel like it’s a rebuilding team trading with a rebuilding team. While I know we are at different stages of the rebuild I still don’t think we should be giving up multiple pieces that should be an important part of our turn around for a player that is still very young but is also entering his huge money contract years. Just feels like we’ve been so patient and we are all of a sudden going to push half our stack of money into the center of the table and try to accelerate things.

BTW this must be what Flyer fans felt like when suddenly Hischier became the #1 pick and they wound up with the guy they were expecting to be #1...this better turn out different since we're probably gonna be on the other end of the swappidie-doo this time :P
