Thoughts on Seamus Casey and where he might go?
His ranking has been falling all year. One time in top 10 now mid-second on majority of lists. Other defensemen have surpassed him including Hudson on US NTDP u18 team.

He's shifty with really solid transition game, but his straight line speed isn't quite good enough for a small defensemen. Not really on my list for Montreal unless he's still there with our early 3rd.

Jiricek’s skating is not below average. He moves quite well actually. There’s also room for potential growth here since he takes short strides but has the long legs to increase the power he generates.
He is absolutely below average as far as the NHL is concerned. I think he has a reasonable chance to develop adequate speed but watching him try and catch attackers from behind reminds me an awful lot of Subban running on his skates and embarrassing himself. Jiricek isn't that bad but he needs work as he would get blown by in the NHL with his current speed. He does look to have some good edgework which will help him pivot when he is beat and his length has to be factored in there as well.

I don’t agree whatsoever and you’d be hard pressed to find a scouting report that agrees with you. Like WTK said, his backwards skating can be labeled as needing improvement. But there’s no issue with speed/acceleration.

Agree with this analysis. For some reason he doesn't get a full extension, but he's quite good on his edges. If he has a real weakness in his skating it's his backwards skating, which is quite important for a defenceman. If you get turned easily as a dman, you're going to have a bad time.

Backwards skating being a weakness for a dman is indeed quite concerning. I haven't seen enough of Jiricek to trust him yet as a top 7-8 pick. Here's hoping he gets significant ice time at the World Championship.

@WeThreeKings is going to love this part:

"If you’re shooting for the highest ceiling when it comes to the most game breaking offensive talent in the draft: I would go for Cooley over Wright."
I wonder if we would risk that at first overall... it's kind of like the KK draft where he was drafted for potential and position more than anything else.

What would be *cool* is if we were drafting 2nd,3rd or 4th and ended up with Cooley and the Habs come out and say "We drafted the guy we had number 1 on our list" 🔥

I figured out who Cooley reminds me of stylistically: Doug Weight. Doug was more pass-first, but the way they look on the ice and the creativity is pretty similar.

Not trying to be too mean, but this guy is clearly a very very big fanboy of Will Scouch. So if you're looking for the original take/analysis on a lot of these guys, I would head to his channel.

Weight wasn't a burner but he got around well. It's more the skating posture and puckhandling/creativity I see as similar to Cooley... in my very limited viewings anyway.

Top 5 looking more and more likely as the losses mount. I'll be happy with Wright/Cooley/Slaf/Nemec/Jiricek then just hope we picked a good one this time.

Weight more like Suzuki to me. A 200 pound, 70 point center. Not good enough to be a top center in game, but too good for #2 center. Cooley plays more small speed with grit.

Honestly, my fear is to miss on Nemec or Jiricek in this draft. Top Dmen are key to success and hard to find. I fear that none of them is here at 5.
Wright-Cooley- Slaf are going 1-2-3, so one of Nemec or Jiricek will be there….we are more then likely drafting top 3 though so no need to worry, we are getting a good one this year

That isn’t set in stone. In fact I’d bet that Cooley will likely drop out of the Top 3 in favour of one of the defencemen. GMs will prefer a big RD over a 5’10 centre. That’s just the way the NHL is.

Seattle, for instance, are much more likely to take someone they can envision being their #1D (to pair with Ryker Evans) than someone that would slot into the 2C position.
