Everybody saying best player not at top of this draft. It's a Makar type draft. Wright and Slaf over rated

Cooley fits Hughes speed and skill mantha

Exactly and he has potential to produce points 90++ per season. He has explosive skating and never stop skating. This is the type of player KH wants.

Cooley will be the best out of the 3. Remember Makar guys.

Is this really a draft mega thread? Or is it a who should Montreal draft is thread? Asking for a friend.

My choices ranked (out of the top 3 available) :

1) Wright
2) Cooley
3) Slaf

Pick a Centre please. The sheer amount of years we've gone without 2 top end Cs have been agonizing. Suzuki is developing nicely, please pick a guy he can help mold and grow with.

If it's Wright, great. I value hockey sense really highly and he has it in spades. He's handled the pressure of being exceptional status and projected 1st overall for years now. Super mature, trains like a pro already. Wants to be a Hab.

If it's Cooley, okay. They value the skill/dynamism he brings along with his compete over Wright. Fine. He at least projects to be a C and I can get behind picking a C with a different skillset if that's what it takes. Hughes knows him really well so obviously he likes him if he's picked.

If it's Slaf, I'm pissed and am gonna have to start drinking to koolaid to like this. Rose way, way too high for me. Reminds me a lot of the Andrei Kostitsyn/KK picks where we try to be the smartest guys around when there are better players sitting there. We don't draft the C we've been looking for and who knows when we have this chance again.

Either way, Thursday can't come soon enough and intrigue is high.
100% my thoughts.

I have stayed away from the repetitive debates on this forum and elsewhere (hello Twitter). Mais là, je me mouille.

I believe the Habs will take Cooley. Will I be disappointed if they pick Wright or Slavkovski? No.

My hunch is that Renaud is doing the dirty deeds for the organisation. I said that I would be waiting for some ‘inside’ info. I think that’s the first inkling into their intentions : preparing the crowd for a not-Wright.

He threw Slav’s name out there for the NJ decoy. But I do believe that Hughes is leaning Cooley. In part because of familiarity (not only that, but I noticed that it seems to contribute in many hockey-related decisions he takes), and because of the style of player Cooley is : speedy, IQ, character.

Crowd at the Bell Centre won’t be happy (the polls here reflect the general perception. And some will boo (certain of that). But they have their sights on the American kid.

Meaning we will have to live with our centre line for at least 1 more season. One of the weakest centre line in the East, IMHO. Barf.

On La Dose, his tone was too unequivocal. And seeing his partner’s tweet last evening tells me that he has a source. It’s not HuGo. But he is very close to Bouillon. Very. And Bouillon might have been used here.

Grasping at something that is not there? Maybe. If others come out today with the same ‘insight’, it will reaffirm my belief.

Cooley it will be.
I'm actually ok/excited about Cooley as for the center line meh I want another top 5 finish anyway next year is stacked even at 5 you could get a franchise player

Hughes explicitely stated they'll consider position along with everything else.

And it's quite logical to do so as some positions have a greater impact than others.
It’s all about weighting, isn’t it? Didn’t see Hughes’ statement about position.

Yesterday afternoon's presser
Thanks. I’ll have to go back and listen.

However, if position was that important, I’d surmise that Nemec should have been in the final 3 as it’s a clear organizational need.

I think the Top of the Habs list is:
Wright
Cooley

If there’s no trade, they’ll take Wright.
- the expectations of fans in attendance, the conversations between Wright and Vinny about being 1st OA, Wright being the safest bet at #1, is used to the pressure of being #1, etc.

However, I think he’s trying to move to 3 for Cooley.
- crowd won’t boo Cooley at 3, Hughes giving the heads up that he could trade down instead of “we know our pick and are keeping it”.

“If the draft was today, we’d pick 1st” was a message to a GM (Armstrong?) that the latest offer wasn’t good enough.

If Hughes steps to the podium first, there won’t be any surprises.

to be fair, hes said always take BPA unless there shades of Grey and if so then factor in position

I've seen on a Mock Draft on NHL.com that someone has Lambert potentially falling to us at 26. I remember hearing a ton about this guy last year and he seemed to have completely fallen off.

Would it be worth it to take him if he falls that far or is it even realistic he makes it to us?

Welcome

Which leaves me to believe they're either not high on Nemec or are simply fibbing by saying they're targeting the 3 forwards.

One more thing I like about Cooley is his dynamic ability positionally. Like it is with Suzuki, if needed depending on if Habs draft a centre top 5 next year, he can probably transition to the wing if needed. Whereas wright is a centre through and through and wouldn't really fit on the wing.

Position like a tie breaker of sorts, then. If there is no one they clearly like better over the others, then I understand where it might come into play.

I’m hoping they’ll have more then enough other attributes to gauge that will produce separation between the candidates such that position stays an outlier.

Yes he's worth the risk at a low first round especially if you take wright or Cooley at 1. Personally I think Lambert would fit well with a player like wright as Lambert is very puck dominant whereas wright wasn't as much this year

That’s an interesting theory. Does anyone know offhand what it typically costs to move up from 3 to 1? Could they hypothetically use what they get for that plus the 26th pick in a package to get another top ten pick and leave the first round with Cooley and Lekkerimäki?

As Hughes said, position comes into play when the quality of player is comparable.

Quality, then position.

Quality keeps Nemec out of the top 3.

Position could determine who gets picked from the top 3 since the quality of comparable.

He's in my top 26, but of course it depends who else might have fallen.
