Realistically, anyone with true expectations for this Jets team are setting themselves up for disappointment. And while that may be annoying having been a fan of a team that hasn't made the playoffs in a decade, it's the reality. This is an entirely new team for the most part with a first time head coach, first time offensive coordinator and a rookie QB heading the youngest team in the league. If you're not expecting bumps along this road, then I don't know what to tell you.
Now, there are plenty of things to be concerned about. The offensive line was trash for the majority of the game yesterday. Zach was running for his life the entire first half. The running game was non-existent as a result, but none of that collection of RBs stood out. The tight end group is mostly scrubs, and a halfway decent one would help Zach out tremendously. If we're without Becton for an extended period of time, it could be an even longer season than before.
All that said, I'm encouraged by quite a few things:
1. Zach responded to adversity really well in the second half. After getting the shit kicked out of him for 30 minutes, I thought his response was excellent and showed he's a leader. When he had a second to finally process and not run for his life, he made some impressive throws. I'm very hopeful from what he showed yesterday.
2. Corey Davis looks like he'll be the best WR we've had on this team since Marshall and Decker, though that isn't saying too much given the list of wideouts since then.
3. THE COACHING STAFF MADE HALF TIME ADJUSTMENTS! I couldn't tell you the last time we had a staff who did this.
And they worked!
4. I think Saleh is going to be the real deal. Dude is a leader and I think he has a great idea on what he is doing defensively. There are a lot of no-names on the defensive side of the ball and I was worried about the corner situation but they more than held their own. This is the best I've seen our corners tackle since Rex's days here. I thought overall, the defense did an admirable job given they were on the field a lot in the first half and only gave up 3 points in the second half. And for what it's worth, disregard what much of the media will say, Darnold didn't have some sort of spectacular game. Having McCaffrey as your security blanket will do wonders for you overall which is why he had so many touches. I'm happy for him, though. I want him to succeed now that we're past him.
I know preaching patience to a Jets fan is ill advised, but I'm doing my best with it.
