Hutson is pretty good defensively it might just not translate as good in the NHL though because he's smaller
I love the kid but I don't think you can describe his defensive ability as "pretty good" already. Lot of room for improvement in that area and to your point it won't get any easier as he moves into the NHL given his size limitations.

Really hope he gets a bit more explosive in terms of speed too.

Interesting tidbit in below article talks about how he has delayed bone growth and has another year of growth in him. So while he’s small, he’s still growing.

A report from Hutson’s endocrinologist indicated his bone age is delayed relative to his biological age, which means his frame still has more than a full year of additional bone growth to go.

Hopefully they have a nice meal plan in mind for him that year to maximize his growth.

He's just one inch less than Quinn Hughes, listed at 5'9" on DB. saw his highlights, he's like the Connor Bedard of Defensemen, great talent, and superb agility.
Yeah he’s insanely dynamic, reminds me a bit of marner the way he uses his hands, edges and vision

what NCAA team has his rights?

Extremely talented but would probably need to add 2 inches.

There's a chance that happens. He's done bone age x-rays and his brother grew to their fathers height (5'11) after his 18th birthday.

Very happy with this pick.

Imagine he has some late growth spurt and ends up close to 6 feet.

Such an exciting pick. The upside here is crazy and there's a good chance his floor is a 3LD + PP weapon.

Imo, his floor is KHLer. If he can't handle the big forwards in the d zone, he can't be an NHL regular.

Let's hope he finds his niche! He's definitely number two on my list in order of top prospects from this draft.

Quinn Hughes 2.0?
... or Thomas Chabot 2.0? Either would be a home run. Puck moving D are gold, as long as they aren't a liability without the puck. Will Hutson qualify? His doctors supposedly predict some height growth still likely based on bone age. That could make a big difference if true.

Cap Friendly lists him as signable until August 2027, as he is committed to a Division 1 school but if he makes the team as a freshman, it could change to 2026, as a player can only play 4 years (with Division 1 schools allowing for a red-shirted year).

Scott Wheeler did an excellent article on him

Essentially he's just a high end thinker and manipulator offensively, able to think and see the game ahead in ways very few can. His skating ability (edges, agility and quickness) allows him to thrive offensively.

Defensively he doesn't try to be something he's not, has a really good stick and since his pivots are so f***ing good, he can collect dump-ins and get out of trouble quickly, while defending a rush, even if he gets beat, he pivots and mirrors the puck with his stick so well he can control.

Is also a take-away artist.

Xhekaj might be a great future partner for him, in the sense you could shelter him with the rangey physical kid and then just give Hutson full PP minutes, that's if his defense and growth physically doesn't hold up enough to play a lot of physical minutes 5 on 5.

I was ecstatic when i heard ndtp when they announced the pick as i was so in love with this player. Glad we had him he could very well be the best offensive dman of this class😎. Remains to be seen if he still grows an inch or two and if he handles bigger bodies behind the net moving forward.

IMO his skills alone make him a probable homerun swing out of the park and into the water. Thrilled

I like this plan a lot. We saw this year how even a guy like Wideman can be valued on team, a #5-6 with full PP responsabilities. And Wideman most probably is worse defensively than Hutson will be in the long run.

I don't see why this type of D-man would not work in the NHL in the future. If you don't have a rock solid offensive #1 D-man, then going for a PP specialist is a valuable second option.

I had a friend who spent a lot of time this year on making a top 20 mock. He had Hutson way high on his list, #9 I think. Probably a bit of an overreach due to his size, but still that's where he put him based on his overall game. He was ecstatic when we drafted him!
