2nd period is underway and the Utica audio feed has been lost. Using Springfield broadcast.

Sprf keeper is Vadim Zherenko. He will be VK for the remainder of this one.

Stevens continues to do too much with the puck when he he has open line mates to pass to.

Comets havinf problems thus far in the second. Turning it over often in all 3 zones. Shots now 21-14 T-Birds.

Schmid a glove save and holds on. That line was pitiful. Laying back, not challenging the puck possessor acting like they were killing a penalty. Parent/Schmelzer/Dugan.

Comet 6 on 5 with a delayed penalty. Comets controlled for a minute and never even took a shot!

Comets now to the PP.

Parent on the PP? Seriously? Prove me wrong kid.

Comets change up after a Dugan shot goes out of play.

Walsh tries to skate it out alone and turns it over and Schmid gloves a blast from the circle.

This was nothing like a PP and it it thankfully ends.

Comets fail in close and the Birds get a 3 on 1. Puck carrier tripped. 6 on 5 for the Birds and they are all over the Comets. Shot after shot and finally they score. It was inevitable Birds scoring on their 28th shot.

Schmid has done his part, but the rest of the Comets have left the building. They are being outeverythinged. TGhey are not even skating. Often you will see a couple of them just standing still in their own zone.

Comets now go to the PP. Last one was much more dangerous for the T-Birds.

Right off the bat Johnsson is stripped and it's a semi breakaway and he loses it.

Foote has received several passes in front of the net, but he is in too close to maneuver into the crease and the keeper just smothers his efforts right off his stick.

2 good chances from the 2nd unit in front. Both stopped. PP is over.

Comets now ice it 3:12 to go.

T-Birds press. Comets get out 2 on 1.

Halonen to Hutchison and VK comes up huge.
The trailing D-man tries to dig it out and inadvertently puts it into his own net.

Birds up ice ands don't get a chance. Comets back the other way and Senyshyn tries a one-timer, stopped.

Breakaway and Schmid is huge.

Comets the other way and Hutchison tries to center it and hits the back of the net with his pass. Terrible Hutch!

Off the draw the Comets get it on net. Held on.

Horn goes to end the 2nd.

2 -1 Comets.

SOG
Comets - 16
T-Birds - 19
2-period total 31-26 T-Birds.

The only players playing well are the 2 keepers.

I'll make my statement right now. If the Comets manage to stay in this one and it gets late with them ahead, Dineen MUST forget about the "locking it down" scheme. They have looked like that was what they were doing the entire 2nd period when they were actually attempting to compete.

They have been skated right out of the building and somehow managed to stay in this one thanks to the stellar play of Schmid. He's made 30 saves already on 31 stops.

Maybe, since they have not really exerted themselves thus far, they will be able to put forth their best effort in the 3rd.

They are playing for points in their 10th straight game.

Here we go with the 3rd. Shaya is back.

VK out behind his net and the Comets can't get it home with him still stuck back there.

Nemec being roughed going down the boards after an offsides call. He didn't back down and shoved back. Nothing more comes of it.

Comets are giving the T-Birds open lanes to shoot at Schmid. Not challenging any shooters.

Comets have not been able to control many passes since the end of the 1st.

Icing again called on Utica. Passes keep missing their targets. Comets acting drunk or concussed. Icing again. 16:13 to go. That's still a lot of hockey. Can't even imagine what tomorrow will look like at 3:00 if this is their energy level now.

Comets skate in close with the extra man and instead of shooting at the bottom of the circle Stevens tried to force a pass across and it failed.

Springfield has apparently been hit with a bunch of callups as well as injuries. So? Comets are playing under the same conditions. Almost halfway into the AHL season as well as their parent, this is a normal situation for many AHL teams.

The game is becoming very ragged with little control by either club.

Comets offsides. Stevens again refusing to relinquish possession. He's playing as if he has become a top possession center. He has not.

Time for Dineen to give instructions to lock it down? Hope he doesn't. T-Birds have been just as challenged this period as the Comets. They must keep trying to push play up the ice. Old rules. Get it out and get it in deep.

Comets following my instructions.

VK holds a shot for a whistle..

Keeper will be3 leaving soon. DINEEN, let them keep up what they have been doing.

Icing Utica. That's not what you want to do.

F**king Dineen. He's done it again. Comets blindly cruising around in thei own end.

VK is gone.

Comets standing around and the points are blasting.

1:00 to go.

Standing around and watching them set up and shoot. This is not how you play 6 on 5.

Shot deflected out of play.

Springfield time out.

Face off to Akira's right. Win this and get it out.

Length of the ice. No whistle and when Schmelzer shoots it back in from the bluline a whistle goes. Officials all in conference and faceoff comes to center ice.

Dineen wants an explanation. Don't ask!

Comets clear it down and the Comets eke this one out.

COMETS WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you watched this one, You're probably like me and wondering how this team keeps piecing these wins together. Getting a goal here and there and ending up on the W-side in spite of so many bad plays, turnovers, penalties, blown PPs, weak failed clearing attempts, etc., etc. I won't argue with the outcomes, but it is not rationally explainable.

Springfield ran out of gas after expending every ounce of enrgy in a dominant 2nd period effort in which Akira Schmid was other worldly.

They played their best period in the 3rd. Outshot 9-4, but got the job done clearing the crease for Akira and moving pucks out of his crease area with authority for a change. They played most of the 3rd doing what hockey people will tell you is the rule - Get it out and get it deep at every opportunity. Only a couple major slips and they managed to cover for them.

Springfield to Providence sounds like a longer drive than an hour?

This one is especially for @Bleedred.

I forgot to mention that the goalie opposing the Comets on Friday and taking the OT loss for Belleville was one of your favorite targets, none other than Louis Domingue. He's now playing with his 14th professional team at 30 years of age including 6 NHL teams in that mix.

On another note, goalie Linus Ullmark is making quite a splash with Boston. The keeper is very much a part of the NHL league leading Bruins story thus far. His current mark of 21-1-1, 1.86, and .939 has been instrumental in their success. In the 2018 AHL All-Star Classic in Utica, NY he and Thatcher Demko teamed up to win the All-Star team championship for the North Division.

I was confident that after watching Thatcher develop in Utica and Linus down the road in Rochester, especially in the huge number of games the 2 had played against each other that NHL careers awaited both of them. Buffalo has to be kicking themsleves in the butt for moving on from a guy who never had a sub-.900 SV% in 6 seasons and was one of the few sweet spots on a terrible Buffalo team. He kept pace with those numbers in Boston last season at 2.45 and .917. He has been otherworldly this season winning 21 of the Bruins 31 games.

Demko has been very good as well with a shitty Vancouver team and has been injured for a good part of this season after a start which points to maybe not being so healthy to begin with.

Domingue appears to be a pretty solid goalie at the AHL level, but definitely not the NHL level.

Jon Gillies .878% in 14 games with AHL Tucson is somehow worse than his NHL stint with us last year.
