2022-23 Utica Comets and ECHL thread

Comets now take an obvious too many men penalty. Clarke is going to the bench. Another Comet jumps on . The puck comes to Clarke and instead of just jumping off and letting his replacement take it, he picks up the puck and heads towards the net.
EASY CALL at 19:05.

They hold the Marlies off with 2 long clearing flips.

2nd ends with the Comets in front 3-2 .

Shots were 11-10 Utica.

Mason Geersten has 1 goal and 2 assists in 20ish games this season. Aarne Talvitie has 0 goals and 5 assists. Geersten scored before this kid did. Not a good sign. Talvitie isn't progressing this year. Clarke on the other hand has been which is encouraging. 2 different player types but Talvitie can't be this much of a blackhole on offense if he even wants to make it as a 4th liner.

3rd underway and this one is anybody's game. Let's see how it works out.

Penalty is killed.

Comets back to the PK. Russo 2 for boarding.

Foote a big block! He's limping. He is laboring it's like 5 on 3. He gets himself off by blocking another one and deflecting it out of play. :46 to go.

Comets get it out and up the ice.
Back up the ice again.
Out for the 3rd time.

Penalty killed!

S______________C_____________O____________R_____________E!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Magic man sets up another . Picks up a loose puck as Foote slid it across the blueline. Johnsson moved throught the left dot and wired a pass to Senyshyn who shot it immediately and it's 4-2.

As I type the Comets allow a Marlkie to work all alone in front of Schmid who comes up big and smothers it.

Lots of time left in this one.

Another Geertsen bomba nd it's chaos again and Clarke just can't control it for a shot with the keeper out of position.

TV TO
8:56 to go.

I started to say before the Comets are comitting the mortal sin for them in trying to play shutdown hockey with a bunch of guys who struggle mightily trying to carry out this duty.

6:55 to go and the puck is in the seasts. It's all in the Comets end.

JC play offensively!

Icing Utica.

Marlies turnover in their slot and Wotherspoon one times it into Woll.

5 Comets standing around and the Marlies are swarming. Of course they score.

4-3 now.

4:37 to go. to go.

They cannot play that gme. It has failed evertime they have tried to do it this season. It's how they blow leads in games they have in control. Dineen should know what his team's strengths are especially with such a shorthanded roster.

Here come the Marlies again.

3:31 to go FO in the Comets end. Lose the draw and Schmid grabs a rocket.

Get the puck up the F..king ice and keep it there!

Hutchison a block and then a great stop by Schmid. It's been big chance after another.

2:41 to go.

They get the puck and can't clear it but it goes out of play.

Marlies continue toi get great looks and the Comets are abysmal at gaining control.

1:50 to go.

Keeper finally out and it's 1:21 to go 6 on 5.

Russo loses it tryhing to send it to the empty net.

F..........U..........C........./K!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Katy bar your ASS Dineen.

4-4 with :45 to go.

OT

1 point when they had 2 wrapped up.

Now they have to try to get the 2nd in a game scheme they have major problems with.

3 on 3.

Walsh goes down the middle and gets a perfect pass from Schmelzer. He MISSES the puck. 3 on 1 the other way and it's off the crossbar and out of play. Walsh smashes his stick. Yeah heehad the game in his hands and didn't even touch the perfect pass.

They surrender a breakaway to Gaudette and the former Comet beats them 5-4.

This one isn't a heartbreaker. It is a pure coaching shitstorm.

OT is another Dineen failure. The Comets have no scheme. They are slower than sludge. They don't move the puck, they dilly dally and wait for 1 guy to suddenly go it alone to the net or pass it around in a triangle until one of them flubs that up and it's a turnover. He doesn't use the best he has as forwards. He seem to think Walsh is the answer to his 3 on 3 dreams. Problem? the opponent has 3 guys out there faster than him. They have set plays to get behind the opponent and uneven rushes and breakaways are the common offensive plays vs Utica in OT.

Utica should avoid OT at all costs because they can't put 3 fast sure handed players on the ice at one time. Thus, they can't defend the faster opponent they are matched up against and can't out run them to the goal at the other end. Their only hope is for the opponent to screw up and give them a odd man rush from the blueline in with the best puckhandler they have in control, of the puck. That's how Foote won it o Saturday. Johnsson had the puck and controlled it until the last possible second and then sent a tape tp tape pass to Nolan for a tap in.

Toronto Marlies 5 Utica Comets 4 in OT

Surrendered 2 goals in the last 5 minutes and then lost it in OT. Another late game collapse in which a multi-goal lead is pissed away and victory becomes a loser point.

SOG:
Comets - 11 - 11 - 9 - 0 > 31
Marlies - 11 - 10 - 9 - 2 > 32

PP:
Comets 0/0
Marlies 0/3

Scoring:
Geertsen (1) from Hutchison (5) and Halonen (5)
Clarke (11) from Johnsson (12) and Stevens (12)
Johnsson (4) from Schmelzer (15) and Wotherspoon (8)
Senyshyn (5) from Johnsson (13) and Foote (5)

Schmid 27/32
I'm not going to blame him, but sometimes your goalie has to come up big when the chips are down, but he and Daws continue to give up 3 or more most every game.

Schmid 4-1-3) is at .887
Daws (9-6-1) is at .900
Blackwood (1-1) was .891
Poulter (1-1-2) was .865
That's just not good enough, especially since this offensively starved team has been scoring goals of late.. 39 in the last 8 games. They are outscoring their keepers games. And the 8 game streak of points in every game, 6-0-2-0, is on the back of those goals scored, not the ones stopped. I'm a goalie supporter a lot farther than most fans, but hese 2 have to start playing better because the goal scoring is likely an anomaly is going to dry up and 2-1 and 3-2 type scores are going to be required to keep the points coming in the tightly contested North Division.

I don't think Clarke skates well enough to ever be much of anything in the NHL, but going from 24 points in 52 games last year to 26 points in 29 games is really really encouraging

Now it seems in here every average skating forward in our system has limited upside because of their average skating.

Clarke might still have 2nd line upside. He's progressed so far the last 3 years playing in the AHL. Next time we need a call up for a forward I would like to see him over Thompson.

Part of me is seriously hoping Devils do the classy thing and bring him on the LA trip to get a game in against his brother.

Devils also are playing LA on the second half of a back to back after the Ducks game. Not that the team should need motivation, but giving a guy his first game against his brother definitely should give some extra motivation for the Devils.

He’s certainly earned it with his play of late so it wouldn’t just be a nice gesture.

Who says his brother is going to be playing in that game? I assume he's going back to junior - he got in 9 NHL games and they let him go to the WJCs. These guys have their whole careers to play against one another.

Not sure his situation but he has some AHL games this year so I assumed he turned pro. Elite prospects had him listed on the NHL roster, but that may be a technicality due to him being loaned to Canada.

It looks like you’re right and he just got the nine October games and then sent to the AHL.

Obviously they have the rest of their careers. But the timing of Clarke’s play and the LA game would make for a nice story for his first NHL game, if his brother rejoins the Kings.

My point is even if he rejoins the Kings, he's not likely to play in that game, as he has missed the majority of games. No one who comes from junior and is eligible to play in the WJCs is eligible to play in the AHL except on a conditioning loan, so they'll have to make a decision; I would be shocked if the decision is to keep him, after two months out of the lineup.

Vuk a healthy scratch? That doesn't sound too good.

Beyond the 1st 2 lines, this roster is weak. Gambardella/Stevens/Clarke was the only line to score last night. Clarke and Gambardella in regulation and Clarke the lone score in a 3-2 Shootout win against Hartford.

Breakaway by Sprf, but Schmid was strong. Less than 5 minutes in.

Foote a good chance but shot high over the net from the left dot.

Another shot by Sprf stopped by Schmid and held on for the whistle.

TVTO 13:29

Vuk often rotates with Groleau when the Comets have 7 healthy D.

Clarke had a chnce below the left circle, but didn't get it off clean. Dribbled wide.

Comets to the PP.

Comets PP #11 inn the AHL. Sprf PK #4.

3 shots by Comets in the low slot and all were stopped.

Walsh drives low and misses the net.

Walsh from the slot and hits Foote in front in the back of the leg.

T-Birds shoot iot out and that's the PP.

Stevens breaks across the blueline passes to Nemec coming down the right side and Nemec sends it back and Stevens ...........? ? ?

S----------C---------O---------R-----------E-----------S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1-0 Comets.

Big stop by Schmid on a deflection in front.

TV TO
7:17

A veran honored. In Utica the whole crowd stands and applauds for a decent aqmount of time. In Sprf only an odd number here and there made something of it by standing. Not very impressive.

Both teams played last night and went to OT. Both won. However, the T-Birds were at home. The Comets had to travel.
Fatigue could could play a part before this one ends. Comets also played Tuesday and go again tomorrow at 3 pm. Tough weekend for the Comets especially still limited in roster players.

Walsh shoots it out of play. Comets to the PK.

Last TV TO?
4:48

Scmid makes a save and holds on in a chaotic net front scramble.

1 minute gone and the puck hasn't left the zone / Comets clear it down with 45 to go. Clear it out again. Comets in shorthanded and Groleau shot is stopped and the T-Bird strectch pass is icing. :07 to go. PK over.

T-Birds get a good chance off a stretch pass and Schmelzer catches him from behind and takes him down. Back to the PK.
Stevens has a chance to clear, but tries to skate and turns it over. Foote loses his stick, but Comets clear it out. Sprf doesn't muster anything for the remainder of the period.

:42 left on the PK when period 2 starts.

Comets lead after the 1st 1-0

SOG
Comets - 10
T-Birds - 12

PP
Comets - 0/1
T-Birds - 0/2
