I‘m on the fence about trading EK65.

Given that he has the ability to win games by himself, when he is on, he is a major roadblock in our way to getting top-3 picks.

On the other hand, appreciating his abilities is one of the few things that make it worth tuning in at the moment.

Solution: trade him, once the call-ups of Eklund/Bordeleau/Merkley/etc give us other reasons to watch.

Everyone should be dealt if there’s a good deal available. I just can’t imagine there is a good deal out there right now when cap is tight. Just have to wait it out for the deadline and move expiring contracts for whatever.

The one team I could see doing something big right now is BUF. They have a ton of cap room and have had a good start to the season. They could add someone like Timo for prospects and picks right now and get ahead of the pack.

Anaheim also has $14M in capspace, they eventually need a Klingberg replacement and they might be panicking with their start. However, it could be the other way around and they might actually be tanking since they have $14M in capspace to begin with haha. Who knows with the Ducks.

Yeah there’s three teams with 10M+ in cap space. ARI, ANA, and BUF. ARI is definitely rebuilding so nothing there. ANA and BUF are the question marks although I think both likely stand pat. ANA probably sells but closer to the deadline and BUF probably adds at the fringes. If I were Grier though I’d be on the phone with them trying to get them to trade Quinn+1st+something for Timo+Reimer.

JJ Peterka comes to mind

Fans are in for a huge disappointment if and when Meier and Reimer actually get dealt. A late 1st and B prospect is probably the ceiling for a Meier return while Reimer will fetch a 3rd if they even manage to find a taker.

You think they'd move Quinn over JJ?
I must be missing something
Quinn has been healthy scratched and has 3 points in 7 games over 2 seasons. Peterka has 4 points in his first 7 games and has looked real good. But obviously you don’t watch Sabres games if you think they’ll do Peterka over Quinn.

What? I don't watch the religiously
Sure you're not just looking at a stat sheet?
Isn't Quinn coming off a player of the year season?

He had a fantastic year in the AHL last year but Peterka plays a more complete and translatable game. I’ve watched them a lot because I like a lot of their players and prospects and got a buddy who is a Sabres fan.

Fans like you will remain in denial about how toxic Meier’s $10M QO is until the bitter end. For all intents and purposes he is a rental and will be valued as such.
His play this year isn't helping his value either...hopefully he picks it up before the TDL. I think a 1st round pick and a solid prospect is a pretty reasonable return to expect.

I've been thinking recently ... what is Ferraro good at? The organization values him a lot, putting the A on him and giving him lots of minutes. To me he should model himself after Vlasic - a solid defender that doesn't worry about anything else. He's good at blocking shots I suppose. He can be over-aggressive with defending, but is pretty physical, and I think he should be even more physical. With the puck he's okay but sometimes he's too high-octane for his own good, where he'll mishandle a puck because he's not controlling it smoothly. And I can't for the life of me tell if his skating is good or not. He seems to have a more choppy stride and needs to work harder than most to achieve the same result. You look at the best skaters and their easy strides and he's kind of the opposite. He always looks like he's giving max effort because he is, and needs to to match the speed of better skaters.

He kind of reminds me of an aggressive Justin Braun, Doug Murray, or Brad Stuart almost. He’s the definition of good at a lot, not great at anything. I think if he had a more steady partner, it would be better. He’s a great shot blocker, very physical, fine with the puck. I would agree though, he’s not great at decided when to be aggressive and when not to be and that’s the biggest issue. He has all the necessary skills to be a good second pairing defensive option but his brain tells him to go for the big hit or to chase someone behind the net or whatever and it leads to him being out of position. I thought it was something that would come over time but now in his fourth season I’m not so sure.

Now despite all of this, I still don’t agree with trading him. He has flaws for sure but he also has heart that you can’t teach. I know guys like Vlasic, Braun, Murray etc all were good to great shotblockers but the only other guy I’ve seen consistently putting his body on the line like Ferraro in my 10+ years watching the Sharks is Couture. Now I’d like to push him down on the depth chart a bit to fourth best D but the Sharks just don’t have that luxury. If Ferraro was paired with a guy like Cernak, Pulock, etc or a good defensively RD, they could be a pretty solid shutdown 2nd pair. Issue is he’s been paired with EK (who is fantastic but isn’t going to cover for Ferraro being physical/aggressive), Vlasic, Simek, Benning, etc and it just hasn’t worked because all of those guys are third pairing at best D (except EK which I explained above). Ferraro shouldn’t be the undisputed best D on his pair. Even someone like Braun would have been really good with Ferraro.

Yeah I know it's why I went with JJ instead.
Make the pick top 10 protected to sweeten the pot
Yeah i mean BUF has a lot that I like including JJ, Samuelsson, Savoie, Ostlund, Quinn, etc. I’d love to get Jokiharju as a throw in.

This is something that’s been bothering me as well. I see a defensive version of Mike Brown. Just a hyperactive game that looks good. Now, he’s not that awful, but I question whether or not he’s a top 4 dman. They’ve only played a few games, however, I’m with Hodge as I think Benning is more effective. I really cannot tell how strong of a puckmover he is either.

He's a good shot blocker and brings a lot of leadership and intangibles. Ferraro has looked a lot worse than he is because of deployment (out of necessity) or awful defensive partners. I think he'd settle in nicely as a #4 defenseman.
