Everyone focuses on the 2019 offseason but in hindsight the 2018 offseason was the ultimate Wilsii disaster class:

- Sign Evander Kane to contract no other team would have offered, giving up a 1st in the process
- Draft Ryan Merkley 21st overall despite him having more red flags than a communist rally
- Trade two 4ths and two 5ths for a 3rd and 4th round pick (not a huge deal but WTF?)
- Sign Logan Couture (career high 67 points) to a $64 million contract with 28 team NTC
- Offer John Tavares (career high 86 points) a $91 million contract with full NMC
- Get rejected by Tavares then publicly thank him and his agent just for being considered
- Panic and desperately pivot to plan B of acquiring an elite but redundant player
- Trade what ends up being Stutzle, Norris, DeMelo, Tierney, Balcers and two 2nds for said player
- Fail to either extend or trade Joe Pavelski

Oh and I almost forgot they signed Hertl to a 4-year contract when he's the one guy they SHOULD have signed for 8 years. Probably could have got him at a 7-7.5M cap hit and the contract would be over three years from now.

Seems like the qualifications for Vanek and Miller is them having played with Grier...
Apart from being two of the best players at their positions for 10+ years? They were hired as amateur scouts, not president of hockey operations. Who is better qualified for that role?

Miller is a goalie development coach; also, what's the correlation between being a good player and being a good coach/scout/executive?

Probably that he knows how to play goalie at the NHL Level. To me that would be better than someone who is exceptional at coaching but has never played goalie in the NHL. Or never played in the NHL. Or never played hockey.

Wonder if this is all in addition to our current batch of scouts or replacing some guys

I remember following Igor on twitter a decade ago for my KHL news. Weird.

Also, this is getting just as bad as the Wilson nepotism just in a different way. Adding as many random NHLers as possible to the FO as long as they're ex-teammates because....? Seems like Grier's strategy really is quantity>quality for both players and office hires.

Miller's primary role is amateur goalie scout. He is just also helping Nabokov develop goalies because why wouldn't you want one of the best goaltenders of the past 20 years lending his insight to your goalie prospects?

I seriously doubt there are people more qualified to be amateur scouts than recently retired elite NHLers. These are some of the smartest hockey minds on the planet. Get them up to speed on the technical aspects of scouting and reap the benefits of their uniquely valuable perspective.

If you want an example of an unqualified scouting hire, look no further than DWJr. hiring some stats nerd who founded one of those snake oil websites as a professional scout.

I mean they’ve spent as much time at a hockey rink in their life as most any other scout of a similar age. To be clear, I’m not saying they should be gifted high-level organizational roles - both of these seem like appropriately scoped roles considering their respective playing careers. It’s not Gretzky being handed the keys to the Coyotes organization.

Also Ryan Miller was much better than Nabby and maintained his peak for about twice as long.

Lol. Random NHLers. You say that like these guys were journeymen players who bummed around the league for a few years.

I don't think the path to victory is to follow everyone else off a cliff!

Sharks need innovative thinking, and Grier hasn't shown any signs of that.
So we should not follow the path of the lightning, knights, Colorado, Blues, Penguins. Got it.
