Yotes fan coming with trade idea.

Jan Jenik reportedly wants a fresh start. Still a promising prospect. Has good size and skill, positional versatility. His biggest differentiator is what a pain in the ass he is. World class pest.

AZ could use LD depth. Shored up RD by signing Dumba and trading a 2nd for Sean Durzi.

Despite the 2nd for Durzi, and despite making an unbelievable amount of picks the the last few draft, Arizona still has an incredible amount of picks in the next couple of drafts.

I was thinking about Jenik and a pick or two for Mario Ferraro? Maybe a 2nd or a pair of 3rds?

Is that at all reasonable?
Deal. I’d take a bag of chips for Ferraro.

I thought Ferraro was really bad last year and really should be at best a third pair defenseman which looking at the Benning and Burroughs deals he is overpaid. Now I would like to be wrong that he has some upside but I doubt it.

I am also concerned that in 2 years he will potentially block Muk or Thurn.

Ferraro regressed badly last year. I think Brent Burns broke him. I'd give him this year to sort it out because he has a lot of tools, but trade him if he doesn't trend well by season's end

Ferraro provides more to the team than simply his performance. I think with the right coaching and some tweaks to his game he’ll be more than fine.

The degree to which the previous regime hyped up Ferraro was ridiculous. We'll never know whether they were just desperately trying to highlight the lone half-decent youngish player in the entire organization or if they were actually high on their own supply.

Divorced from those unfair expectations, I think Ferraro is a perfectly fine #4 or #5 defenseman with the potential to develop a little bit further. His contract is reasonable given his age and TOI too. I wouldn't trade him just for futures unless we're getting a 1st. We can likely trade him for a 2nd in the final year of his contract if we're still bad.

Until then IMO Ferraro has more value to us as a sacrificial lamb in tough minutes and the chance he can be flipped for a similar aged roster player at a position of greater organizational need than LD.
Ferraro's calling card has always been that he can be the steady man on a pair with a star offensive D. In college he was Makar's partner, then he played with Burns, and then this year he actually did OK with Karlsson (everyone did).

I don't think he has the stuff to be a top pairing D with a superstar, but as the defensive complement to an offensive-minded mid-pairing player I think he can succeed.

Alas, we don't have any of those.....

I’m operating under the assumption that Dante Fabbro will end up a Shark sooner rather than later. I think Ferraro-Fabbro could be a solid and relatively inexpensive middle pairing for the next 5 years or so but maybe I’m overrating one or both of them.

I'd advocate to grab Fabbro moreso now than when the initial rumors popped up. I'd like to see if his NHL offense could bloom under his old coach and more than ample PP time. Even if it doesn't you are still getting a capable righthanded dman at a position that Sharks are lacking.

I don’t hate Ferraro - Fabbro, Vlasic - Rutta as a top 4 honestly. I mean it’s not a great top 4 but it’s an okay band-aid.

Leon Gawanke. Ferraro-Gawanke should be a pairing they try, at the very least in camp. I'll die on the hill that Grier promised Gawanke an NHL spot, or at the very least, a legitimate good faith shot to win one in camp. Only way to explain his change from going to Europe (Where he had actually signed a contract) to signing with the Sharks after the Sharks traded for his RFA rights.

Grier publicly only promises the chance to compete for a job. He also raised Gawanke's guaranteed salary from $150K to $375K. I suspect that was enough to convince Gawnanke to give the NHL another shot before going back to Germany.

Honestly I think this was completely overstated by the previous regime. He was the only young player and they were trying to sell him to the fans.

Ferraro-Gawanke is a perfect tank pairing because they'd be awful but probably fun to watch

We have an okay 1/2 C, a few maybe top 6 forwards (both offensive leaning), several maybe top 9 forwards (all one way), and two maybe 4/5 dmen. If we’re not the worst team in the league, I’d be stunned. Eklund should make the team but man, talk about being thrown to the wolves.

I expect PP to be terrible, PK to be very bad, and even strength to be absolutely shelled.

Anaheim, Phoenix, CBJ and Chicago should be better likely 8-10 points better. Montreal may be better too. Buffalo and Ottawa may be near the bottom of the table. Vancouver and Calgary could be with some bad luck.

Philly will absolutely suck, but I do think we’re way worse.

I agree.

There’s a crazy outside chance where things click, where Zadina finds his game, where Granlund, Duclair and Hoffman have good seasons, where our defense - and team defense - works really well together to cover Karlsson and Blackwood also regains his form from when he was good.

Absolutely everything has to go right — but because this is the Sharks, I expect it to. We’re going to get into the playoffs just barely then get destroyed in the first round and have a much worse pick to show for it. It just feels right to me.

I think offensively we'll be a middle of the pack maybe higher team thanks to the depth.

I do think from a defensive standpoint we'll be the worst in the league and it won't be all that close.

Im what world are we naming Ottawa and Buffalo in the same metaphorical league as SJ?

As long as the team plays a fire wagon brand of hockey losing games 7-6 or something I feel like they’ll still be entertaining to watch

That’s honestly all I want. And for Eklund and Zadina to break out. Eklund cause duh. Zadina because I think he put a huge bet on himself and it’d be an awesome story for all parties if it paid off.

Zadina is actually young enough to be part of a future core, so hopefully he does. I'm not expecting it, but it's plausible.
