PLD is much younger but with such a hot market for him do we consider moving Couture/Hertl?

Given there are a certain few posters here that love to slam Grier for the return on the Burns trade, does the return for Johansen and Hayes now prove how hard that Burns deal was to pull off and how in no form or fashion was it a fleecing by CAR against Grier? Even without 50% retention, he got a 3rd, goalie prospect, and Lorentz (who will probably turn into a 4th rounder this TDL or summer).

I was hoping they would look to get an asset for a cap dump goalie (Campbell or Martin) but Blackwood is a good pickup for a potential young goalie.

EXCELLENT MOVE!

This guy is seriously the worst (full time) goalie in the league. Worse goalies than him played in the league last year, but most of them were just AHL call ups or ancient Jonathan Quick.

I only wish this could have happened last year, so I didn't have to see him on the Devils and because a Kahkonen-Blackwood tandem may have been enough to secure Bedard.

Blackwood usually doesn't stay healthy long enough, so I'm sure we would have seen more Makiniemi or someone else.

Like, this guy really sucks. He's been an .892% goalie over I think it's last 77 games now? Kahkonen hasn't even been quite that bad over his last 77 games, which I know a decent amount of those were with Minnesota, who makes goalies look better. Every Devils goalie outplayed him last year and the guys that didn't outplay him the year before were third string guys that were for the AHL.

This guy is worse than Jones last few seasons here, but he may not be as bad as Kahkonen was last year, but Kahkonen also may not be as bad as Kahkonen was last year. I expect him to maybe be around .890% or so this year. I'm sure Blackwood will be about the same or potentially even worse.

The TANK is on.

I don't mind this guy. For a 6th in a draft where we have nine million picks? Could be the next Reimer.

Bummer we're not paying someone nearly 6 million to succeed elsewhere??

I expect to suck for 3 years, it’s not my money, would rather maximize Karlsson the asset. Say you can get 11, Boeser, and Myers for him at 40-50% retained, I’d love that. Getting another elite prospect like Moore/Benson/Willander/ASP would be amazing.

Once you retain (20% or 50%) that spot is gone. Granted the difference between 3 and 6M retained also impacts ability to take on bad contracts for assets.

That said, I’m not surprised, particularly with 4 years left, but I just want a fat package for our best dman ever.

Sounds like other GMs know they have MG by his hangers. He has the best defenseman in the league that wants out and has absolutely no leverage in negotiations. It being an "offseason deal" and not getting done before the draft is pretty brutal.

At some point I hope he develops some sort of plan. "Not rushing it" is completely fine, but there are multiple valid buyout candidates and regardless if you plan on being bad or not, bringing the exact same group of guys over and over and over again that don't work creates nothing but dysfunction top to bottom. His shallow words make it seem like he's planning a rebuild, but how long does it need to be planned for/what needs to be planned?

So I recall people last season said that this offseason would be the ideal time to buy out Vlasic. That you either buy him out this offseason or ride him out, because it won't make much sense to do so next offseason. Do we all think this means we'll ride Vlasic out the remainder of his contract?

Eh, based on the caphit distribution, I'd say it actually makes more sense to buy him out next season than this season. It just doesn't really make sense to do it in 2025.
