The sad thing is, I've joked about it, but I'm not convinced he wouldn't.

I feel like we will all be the blonde woman after Montreal selected Kotkoniemi.
Yeah, will bet you any sum of money that wouldn't happen. It's as if you and a host of others here just flat out ignore what Grier says in his very candid media availability sessions.

"We’ve still got to keep building this thing. I think we’ve addressed the defense a little bit. We’ve addressed some of the size concerns and gotten a little bigger. Now I think we have the ability to infuse a little bit more skill in the prospect pool and not be too focused on one thing or another."

Size was the quickest and easiest thing to address in the short-term in the cap situation which he inherited. It's not the only thing that he's worried about though like you and a host of others seem to believe.

You can forgive us when he hasn't addressed anything else yet. I dont take him at face value, because there is plenty he cant and wont say.

I dont remember him saying he wanted to really increase the size over everything else when he got in, so I dont know how much I buy that hes going to target skill going forward. We can only judge his actions, and so far its been a mixed bag at best.

Hes also never said he really loves Boston affiliated players and wants more of them, and yet its obvious by watching him.

Even in business, you usually hire those you know and trust first. Eventually that well runs dry and you have to look elsewhere. It’s not like Grier is only focused on Boston natives, however when the opportunity presents itself, I don’t blame him from going after it. Like Thrun for example. Boston roots and familiarity with our staff may be the reason he signs with us.

Yes, he has so much incentive to lie in Year 1 of a new job where the guy before him only got 20 years in the big chair. Makes total sense to ignore everything that he says publicly because there is clearly no stability and he must lie and deceive the fanbase to save his job... Following your own preconceived narratives makes way more sense.

Everyone judges hires initially based on their network and who they know and have the ability to bring in from a staffing standpoint. Then all of those same people get pissy and claim nepotism when they hire and acquire within their network... Truly remarkable.

Ultimately, I give like, 0 shits about what a GM says. I probably watch about 20 minutes total per season of player and staff commentary. I just don’t think they’re really in a position where sharing anything beyond vaguely vague vagureies of their intent with the public has any value.

I also refuse to hold Grier’s feet to the flames over painfully necessary moves to extricate this organization from cap and pipeline disaster he inherited from the previous regime. Especially less than one year in.

Ultimately he fielded a roster that has been entertaining to watch (sometimes for the wrong reasons ) and has the team in contention for a legit shot at Bedard/Fantilli and two more picks in the top 40 - with the possibility of more if Karlsson is traded prior to the draft. He’s breathed life into our defensive prospect pool, and for all the talk of prioritizing size, the smallish skilled forwards that highlighted whatever value was in our pool previous to his joining all still remains.

From where I’m sitting that’s about all I could have asked for at the beginning of the season.

Next major prospect signing deadline: June 1. The Sharks have five draftees to sign (or they return to draft). Cardwell, Gaudreau, Gilmartin, Guryev, McCue.

And three college grads with deadline of August 15: Chrona, Henrickson, Thrun.
They have 4 contract spots right now. I guess those go to Thrun, Chrona, Cardwell, and Gaudreau. I don’t think any of the others get signed. Just my opinion though.

They can only sign ONE NHL contract for this season (49/50 active contracs). There are 13 guys on expiring NHL contracts that may not return.

I think coach and player speak postgame is an entirely different thing than the 4-5 times a year that the GM gets in front of the mic (especially a new GM). Especially when there are specifics being discussed rather than just very bland surface level stuff.

Capfriendly says they are at 46/50. They might be at 48/50 but Capfriendly didn’t include Eklund and Laroque due to the slide. Obviously Laroque’s contract is going to slide due to him not playing enough games. Eklund’s might not and if it doesn’t I expect Chrona to sign an ATO with the Cuda and then sign after the season.

It’s entirely your prerogative to give GM speak value. I’m just saying I don’t as I don’t expect they’ll share anything of value other than vaguely broad speak and any framing or spin they want to put on a topic. I don’t begrudge them this, as I think it’s entirely fair and expected they’ll attempt to paint as positive a perspective they can (unless it’s valuable for them to do otherwise).

What I certainly don’t do is get hung up on a quote or take given from a GM at one particular moment and try to spin that out to their entire philosophical approach of team building forever into the future. I’m not saying you’re doing this, but in my opinion, some people put far too much weight on a few words said at a specific point in time.

Grier gives a lot more information than DW ever did.

Would it be unrealistic to think the sharks should go after Jasper Bratt? Sounds like negotiations aren’t going well.

Wrong time for a team like us. We need to be bad for 3-4 years and everyone knows it.

By the time you want him, his decline will be in full swing
Exactly this. Would have signed Meier if they wanted to handout an 8-year deal for a winger. Granted, Bratt is 2 years younger than Meier, but still doesn't make a lot of sense given we would just be turning around and trading the assets that we got in the Meier deal.

Really not sure where he goes or what NJD would be looking for in return. They're in win-now mode so futures don't do them a ton of good outside of just giving them more picks to trade for roster players at the TDL. My guess is that he just re-signs in NJD because they can afford to pay both him and Meier massive deals and still be perfectly fine cap space wise with Nemec on an ELC the next 3 years after this and then Hughes for 2 and the rest of their core already locked up.
