I kinda feel like at this point based off what EK said and the current trajectory of the sharks he’d probably be open to going to more teams then he may have originally been open to.

I wanted to pop into the Canucks rumor thread and spout off that they were going to make a play for EK65
Ottawa post sale closing is one that I don't think I can rule out (assuming they don't go and acquire Parayko). What better way to open a new era as ownership than to welcome back the best player in franchise history and defending Norris trophy winner to show the youngsters that you're ready to compete now?

Obviously that depends if Ottawa wants to become a team that spends money for the first time in their history, but who knows what will happen with new ownership.

I’m pretty sure Grier has been actively trying to get it done but hasn’t been able to.
If it was true though that Edmonton was interested, like, at all, he did fail by not getting it done if they get Ekholm instead. I wouldn't be surprised if McDavid, if he really did say he wanted a puck-moving D, specifically mentioned Karlsson, and I'm sure that Karlsson would've been a much bigger help to that team than Ekholm is, though I think he's very good. Sure, it's easier to be done in the summer roster-wise, but they've had months to make the dollars work. At this point, if what we've heard is true that the main hangup was retention and/or asking price, that's just a massive, massive fail for this rebuild-not-a-rebuild. He just did a 9 player trade to make the cap work ffs.
A couture or Vlasic trade would be pretty cool
Hey Logan, thanks for having fun here, but we noticed you didn't have Colorado on your NTC. You're an Avalanche now!

I could see Dallas in the mix as well as Florida.

I mean, Karlsson, even at the rate he's performing, is nearly impossible to move considering his term and contract. Sharks don't want half his contract on their books for 4 years. They'll try again this summer. I think he tried but this is an incredibly difficult deal -- the Meier trade is 10,000 times easier.

Kind of a bummer that Edmonton chose Ekholm over Karlsson, both for us and for Edmonton tbh. Edmonton should have just leaned in to their all-offense mentality; one solid defensive defenseman is not going to change their outlook too much when it’s a problem with the system and the forwards don’t play even a modicum of defense. But it is what it is I guess.

Cap is never more difficult to move than during the season and he tried with one team. There will be more teams and more flexibility in the offseason.

We just need a 2nd, a 3rd, and a 6th to have 2 picks in each round of the draft this season. Feel like they could pull that off.

I think a 3rd/6th will be easy enough to get with Bonino, Reimer, Gregor, etc.

I'd like a third 1st, please and thank you.

I'm a little bummed Karlsson didn't get traded but that may change depending on who we get in this draft...

Too bad Edmonton is out now...so where could Karlsson be feasibly moved over the summer? Ottawa?
It was interesting to note this from The Athletic's quick recap of the Ekholm deal--sounds like a summer deal for Karlsson is not out of the question. I believe this is from their Oilers beat writer:

With Barrie out of the picture, the quarterbacking role on the NHL’s top power-play unit now belongs to Evan Bouchard. He has been the secondary option to Barrie, sometimes acting as even the coaching staff’s 1A choice. Barrie was the top dog, though. If Bouchard, a pending RFA, can’t handle the job, look for the Oilers’ push for Sharks defenceman Erik Karlsson to intensify in June.

I genuinely feel like Seattle would be perfect for Karlsson. They have a solid defense by committee, but they’re missing that X Factor on D.
I feel like it would be a really good fit for all three parties. Seattle has solid prospects that SJ would like. They are a young contending team right now that Karlsson would give a solid chance for a deep playoff team. Dunn can take those minutes as Karlsson ages/declines.

Schultz, Driedger, one of their forwards as the cap dumps bringing that to anywhere from 8-10M in dumps. Goyette, Firkus, Melanson, Winterton, Ottavainen, Nyman, Evans as well as a ton of picks that could all interest Grier. Only issues I see are that Beniers and Dunn will need new contracts in the next couple years (Dunn this year, Beniers next).

Ceci, Yammo picks etc for Karl retained 20 percent leaves Oil over Cap by less than a measly million bucks. 2nd team retain, few other contacts mixed in. But I also have no idea what im talking about. But ya neva know

Doubt Karl waives for Seattle. Too early too unpredictable of a team

if all the Blue Jackets got for Nyquist was a 5th rounder, I really would like to hold onto Barabanov. If he goes for only a 4th or something it would be a steal and not a steal for SJ . I know the Penguins and Jets still need to add, i'm curious what they would offer

Nyquist is hurt and not playing until the playoffs and is under a 0.5 PPG pace.

Different situations. Gus is an expiring UFA currently injured - the thought is that he'll be out until the playoffs start. Hence, you're paying for 4-28 playoff games of a < 0.5 ppg forward at this point.

Barabanov comes with another year. So you're paying for 100+ regular season games and 4-56 playoff games for a player currently > 0.5 ppg.

Price for Barabanov should be much more than Gus.

I would only do it for a 2nd+. Barabanov has another year on his deal at a good price which adds value, Nyquist cannot play until playoffs
