If the Oilers pick up another dman like they are rumored to in the next few days I'm pretty sure it solidifies that Karlsson will be a shark for the remainder of the contract.
Nah. There will be other teams that are interested in Karlsson during the offseason. Panthers are one of the teams that was linked to him and they only have 2 contracts on the books beyond 2025 so there is ample flexibility for someone there to make a deal happen with the rumored $2-3M retention from SJ.

Problem is that Florida has no 1st rounders for a few years so it'd have to be something like Montour, Duclair, and Samoskevich.

Whatever you think of Grier, there's one aspect thats impossible to ignore.

He's dramatically increased the prospect pool and number of young up-and-comers in the system in less than a year.
He's doing a very good job of executing a clear vision and trying to build a competitive culture from the ground up

It may take a while but for now I'm sold

Yeah, honestly, I was on the fence with Grier but I'm actually really starting to like what he's doing. He's focusing on the right things and he's building an actual prospect pool. For the person who said we have too many D prospects now -- I think you can never have too many. If you get your Top 6 and they're great -- good, then you have trade chips for other things.

I think what Grier is showing is a very, very methodical and smart building up of our team through FA signings, waiver wire pickups (if it fails, why not, if you get an Eyssimont, great!) and smart little trades. I feel like he's really taking advantage of talent from other teams that are falling by the wayside and giving them a chance to grow here (Kaut, for example).

Anyway, I like it. I think DW was so focused on winning the Cup, he did virtually no development. Now, it feels like what we're building is an actual healthy organization.

This is the right time to take low risk chances on prospects that didn't pan out for whatever reason. The biggest naysayers just seem upset that we're not grabbing guys in trades that will immediately turn the fortunes around but truthfully we're not in a place where those are that important.

Agreed. And honestly, we'll get those in the draft. That's the right way to build right now.

Is there even a Karlsson trade to be made in the summer? If I'm another team, I'm not trading for him even at 6m if I'm not sure his play will carry over. First good season in a while and Grier assumes teams will be lining up for him @33? If he isn't moved at the deadline I'll be surprised if he CAN be moved in the offseason. Not sure why Grier isn't trying to get this done. More important moving EK than getting a 6th for Bonino and a 5th for Reimer.

I’m pretty sure Grier has been actively trying to get it done but hasn’t been able to.

Please tell me how you think that teams can move $8.5M of cap to acquire Karlsson and not implode the chemistry of their existing roster? It's fun and games to say Edmonton should remove 3-4 players to make Karlsson work (I was on that train until a few days ago when I got to thinking about it), but removing 20% of a roster midseason is unprecedented and super risky.

That and how does anyone think that it's not easier to account for the cap dollars associated with Karlsson in the offseason? Contracts expire and teams move salary aplenty in the offseason.

Agreed. There could be a complete wild card type out of nowhere team that comes calling for Karlsson this summer because they have cap space. As long as Karlsson doesn't get hurt to close the year, there will be teams looking for a defending Norris winning player this summer. Just a matter of finding the one that Karlsson will go play for that will be tough (particularly if EDM finishes off this Ekholm deal today).

So Arizona took 25% of Kane's contract for a 3rd round pick. I know it expires this season, but would they take 2nd round pick for 1 million of Karlsson's contract for 4 years?
Sharks retain 2-3m. Karlsson at 7.5-8.5m should be really enticing for a number of teams.

There's, uh, a lot happening out there.

I know we're probably done other than trading away some spare parts for low picks but all this excitement makes me want something bigger. BIGGER.

I kinda feel like at this point based off what EK said and the current trajectory of the sharks he’d probably be open to going to more teams then he may have originally been open to.

I wanted to pop into the Canucks rumor thread and spout off that they were going to make a play for EK65
