Speculation: 2022-23 Sharks Roster Discussion Part II

I don’t think it’s given that Karlsson is gone and even if he is it’ll be basically an even cap in cap out move.

I’ve been very vocal (in general but also) about insulating the young guys but there’s also a certain point where you’re just blocking the young guys.
Given we have maybe 2-4 guys currently in the system that the new front office thinks might be NHL players, I don't think that there is much blocking happening.

And if we're using the Edmonton model as an example, Grier would be flipping most of the cap coming back (like Barrie) for more picks/futures so not truly cap in and cap out. Should have oodles of cap space for the next few years with guys coming up on ELCs over that time period as the prospect pool is rebuilt.

Maybe it is just because I live in his market, but Strickland has always been an annoying hack in my mind. This has literally been reported as the ask for like a month now. Dude is a clown that is a team beat reporter that tries to play national talking head far too often.

Sharks are dumb if they trade Timo to vegas
The price to acquire will be higher than NJD because 1) conference rival, 2) division rival.

So let's say NJD is offering three assets: 2023 1st, prospect, roster player. I'd expect VGK to have to pony up 4 or more assets, e.g., 2023 1st, 2024 1st, prospect, roster player.

I think the issue is that the prospect and roster player from VGK is almost definitely worse than the prospects from other teams.

Given Karlsson is gone prior to the start of next season one way or another, don't think contracts really matter a ton at this point. We are going to be swimming in cap space for a few years. I will say that getting real NHL players to insulate guys like Eklund, Bordeleau, Timo prospects, 2023 1st round pick, etc. with will be important. Not only to learn/protect/mentor but also just to have someone to truly beat out for a spot compared to the way the org has been since 2019 where the youngsters got jobs by default (and honestly has gone back even further than that when I think of the year where Hertl, Nieto, and Freddie Hamilton made the team out of camp because there was no NHL caliber depth forwards to be found.
I disagree - The same thing was said in the offseason when we gave up a lottery ticket pick for Kunin. Not only did we waste the pick, we wasted the cap space and missed out on potential cap dump deals. This team should be fine going into the season with cap space when we know we are going to be really bad.

So, conventional wisdom (ha) would say that booting Carolina is because their offer wasn’t good enough? I know it’s all speculation but I’m wondering why decide this?
Might be more that Timo said he doesn't want to sign there and that was contingent on the trade value.

What did we miss out on cap dump wise? Zaitsev? We were already rumored to be in on that deal even in the current cap climate. We literally didn't miss out on anything because Kunin can be put on LTIR any time and have zero impact on our ability to take on a contract.

Furthermore, we're not going to be in the financier business this year anyway because we're retaining on Burns, will retain on Meier, and then will be retaining on another one of our own deals for our maximum allowable 3 retention slots.

I am thinking what he said. Seemingly VGK doesn’t have any prospects or roster players that are even close to what NJD has to offer.

Vegas doesn't have anything to trade with but no sharks fan should think they are going to win this trade. We need to get lucky with the pick to even come out even

Depending on which prospects we get back yeah I could be disappointed. But I try to keep my expectations realistic unlike you in trade rumours asking for Nemec, etc.
I think I’m going to be disappointed no matter what the return is because there’s very little chance any of the guys we get back will be as good as Timo. The thing is Bedard, Fantilli, and Carlsson could be. Other than the first game he missed, we’ve looked like f***ing trash since Timo went down. Moving him gives us a much better chance at one of those guys.

Do you think that makes you more holy or something? Preparing for disappointment and then cast on others? Sounds like a real shitty way to live.
