Speculation: 2022-23 Sharks Roster Discussion Part II

You don't give Timo away, but you have to trade him IMO.

-getting him off the roster helps push towards landing a new core franchise player. Him playing well enough on the roster that we miss out on one of the top guys would make this season another wasted tank year.
-he will probably be a negative value contract by the team we are competing. We are a bad team, we can't keep signing these ageing contracts to 8 year deals.
Hate to deal Timo, but I agree. The core player we're going to build around isn't going to be in the trade return, it's going to be in the draft.

That's not necessarily true with Barabanov because of his lack of NHL experience. A player is only valued by how they are perceived by GMs around the league. If he plays at a 50+ point pace again next season his value will be similar to this year, even as a rental. Also, even though Barabanov is 28 he appears to still be getting better at the NHL level.
He has been playing at a 50 point pace for 134 games for the Sharks over 3 different seasons on 2 different lines (i.e. not just a Hertl and Meier/Kane coattail rider). He might still be getting better, but a ton of his value is the fact that he only costs $2.5M against a cap that will only be going up a million dollars next year.

Also, just because he might be getting better/more adjusted, that doesn't make him immune from age trends that affect basically all of the non-elite players. Not as if he just didn't play hockey until later on and has less miles. Those miles are basically the same and just came in a different league.

Hopefully that Pagnotta report is just something to put out into league circles to try and create some demand/leverage for Barabanov to secure the return that they want.

If Grier doesn't manage to even get Holtz out of this, I call this trade a big L.
The point is that, if you don't have trade good enough then close the phone.

I’m very worried that we’re getting Zetterlund and a scrub.

If the ask is a top prospect, he is not a top prospect. Their top prospects are names that no one wants to say. Now that all depends on how the sharks evaluate their prospect pool, but I expect to be disappointed.

Right, Holtz is likely the highest prospect they have that isn’t on their “we won’t trade these guys” lists, but god who the hell knows. I’m worried it’s like Muhk and that’s it. Or a goalie or something.

Lol that Pagnotta threw Holtz's name in his article and now is saying he hasn't heard his name thrown around.

That said, no Holtz is a seemingly good sign as it leaves the potential for Nemec/Mercer in the deal (not that I am banking on it, but Holtz in there means there is no shot). Keep going back to if Grier turned down a pair of 1st rounders and Bolduc from STL that the return has to be good comparatively. Fingers crossed.
