Where do 2nd pairing D play 16 mins a night? He's closer to a #7 than a 2nd pairing guy. He's 6th among D-Men in time on ice per game with Nashville this year.
I haven’t paid close attention to NSH but he definitely started the year 2nd pair and played there last year. He also is better than Benning so he’s be top 4 here

Might have, but quick search of the Preds on Hockey Reference shows that he's had his minutes slashed. He's a non-qualifier candidate through and through. Will be battling with Benning for the 2nd pairing D minutes if Benning isn't dealt somewhere else (getting a quality bottom pairing D-Man that can PK and is cheap enough to stuff through waivers for the next 3 years after this might be enticing to some cap strapped playoff teams).

The Orlov trade is huge. You gotta think there's a massive arms race about to happen in the East. Hopefully Grier can capitalize.
Grier right now:

Love that. Give me the Metro rivals going blow for blow to get him. One of them will potentially overpay. Given the head to head nature, the two of them going at it is better for SJ than just having STL in the mix.
If we’re talking about an arms race to get out of the east, I could definitely see Carolina upping the ante now to get Timo.

How do Carolina and NJ not go all in here with Meier? Carolina especially - they feel like they want to win now, their competition is arming up. I’m sort of putting my money on them taking the plunge and giving Grier his asking price.

Jarvis? Who?

Dundon seems like the kind of owner who might step in and say to go all in.

Carolina just seems like they have less pieces to offer. Their offer would have to be something like Jarvis + Morrow + 1st in my mind as Morrow alone isn't worth enough and they've supposedly already taken Nikishin off the table. They don't have any other prospects that move the needle for me at all really

Personally I prefer Carolina’s prospects to New Jersey’s once you take away Nemec and Hughes.

Getting Jarvis included from Carolina would be awesome, because if Grier wants to give NJ the final offer, they'd have to up their offer to at least Mercer. Then we're talking pieces that are genuinely useful to us going forward, either way, and not just a few lottery tickets.

I wonder if this is Toronto's year? Everyone is down on them, they finally have a lot of experience, and I really think O'Reilly could be an underrated acquisition for them.

Goaltending still just screams major question mark for Toronto. They can win a round, but not sure they can truly think about advancing with Samsonov as their horse in net (and Murray is even worse).

Given your criticism of Thornton, how would you view Matthews if the Leafs lose in rd1 again?

It depends on his play.

Both he and Marner have that thing where they just...fade as a series progresses. Boston/Montreal/Tampa Bay made adjustments and Matthews/Marner didn't.
