Speculation: 2024-25 - Free Agency/Trade Thread

We’ve heard all this before

I’m fine keeping gibson around, but pretending like we’re going to take a step back in goal when gibsons had 1 good year over the last 5 years is silly

If gibby wants out we should move him… we’re going to likely lose the trade but that’s alright
Yes, this year’s Gibson is the outlier. I think the reduced workload has helped him.

IMO the only teams that would be interested in Gibson at the TDL are two teams - Carolina and Edmonton - who have legitimate SC aspirations and feel that a goalie upgrade is their missing piece. Verbeek holds all the cards in that trade negotiation and he should drive as hard a deal as possible and get his price. If the price isn't met then Gibson stays.

The summer is another matter but that is too far away to predict who will do what. Gibson would be smart to just continue being a good soldier and play well. If he really wants out that's his best way to get out.
Ya I mean PV holds the cards…. And in theory summer will have more potential suitors.

As long as gibson continues to play well, oilers and Carolina will have to either come to our value(which we don’t exactly know what that means) or try to out bid a bunch of other teams in offseason after a terrific year

Why is it a good thing? He would be the best player the Ducks have had in over a decade and he is only 28.

I don’t think he is worth it. The next couple of months will be a good indicator of his ability to carry a team.

If he doesn’t move the needle with the Canes, I’d have concerns going forward.

Part of me hopes he signs with Nashville this Summer to complete the trifecta.

Don’t really care as Gibson never showed he was a playoff winning goalie. He’s had his fair amount of chokes but none lithe Freddy in game 5 of the wcf vs Chicago giving toews a muffin

He was done after that

I would say that's a bit harsh on Gibson. He's had multiple good stretches in the last 5 years while the team has been terrible. No goalie could have altered the course of the last 5 years. The numbers show how much more he's had to handle compared to the average NHL goalie in that stretch of time. The Ducks have been fortunate to have a quality goalie like Gibson during that time period because it could have been so much worse.

It's also not silly to suggest that if a playoff bound team wants Gibson, the goalie in return will not be as good. Otherwise why make the trade? In that scenario, the Ducks will have a worse goalie, and considering most games this season have hinged on incredible goaltending, it seems likely that it will have a negative impact on the team at first.

I'm not suggesting that the team will crumble, and if he wants out, that should be respected. But it will negatively affect the team.

Sami Pahlsson's top three seasons for goals were 11, 8 & 8. Best three years for points were 26, 22, & 21.

So that's an example showing that yes you can play above a 4th line role without ever producing 30 points. But we know how incredible Pahlsson was as a defensive center. It's really hard to be sure if someone like Gaucher could pull that off, because it's exceeding rare for anyone to be that good defensively until they are in their third or fourth NHL season, can't really count on it.

Based on Gaucher’s stats this year, it seems a bit far-fetched to envision him even getting to the level of offense that Pahlsson provided.

I think nowadays, there is a bare minimum level of production you need to show to get a look and I don’t even know if he’s close to that. Pahlsson was actually a decent scorer in the Swedish elite league back then.

He won’t sign with the Ducks because the Ducks won’t pay him $14m. Which is a good thing.

I’m inclined to think Mikko may have made a big mistake in forcing Colorado’s hand, but not as big as Carolina’s.

John
The ducks should pay whatever is required to get Mikko.

I agree that in the off season there will be lots of teams interested in Gibson assuming his play doesn't fall off. 2 years @ 6.4M AAV will be an attractive contract for a guy still in his prime - even more so if the ducks retain.

I can't help but wonder what type of deal could be made with Pittsburgh where Gibson presumably would like to play. They're trying to retool (not rebuild) and Gibson would fit that exact window. They're also desperate to offload Jarry who would be a decent (way overpaid) backup to Dostal. The ducks can absorb the Jarry contract as long as Pittsburgh makes it worth the while by adding enough ++++.
