Speculation: 2022-23 Sharks Roster Discussion Part II

How do you propose he gets a top-5 pick from another team, though? The only teams trading for our guys aren't going to be in the lottery so it's pretty much impossible--which is not exactly a fair standard to set for your expectations of your GM.

I certainly understand the bad feelings that go along with trading away your best players; I'll miss watching Timo and Karl a lot if they're dealt, too. But as much as it pains me to admit, it's likely best for the long-term health of the franchise to move those guys along--even if it's not for "fair" value in terms of the return--because it's not like this current team is doing much of anything with them. Might as well turn toward the future instead.
By trading them we don’t get top five picks from other teams but rather our own turns into a top five pick.

If he's able to get two-plus firsts out of Timo and Karl, I'd expect him to use those to move into the top 5. Walking into this draft with multiple firsts and no chance at a superstar would feel like a loss to me. If there was ever a draft to go big or go home, this is it.
I think the same reasoning you give for the Sharks wanting to use those picks to get into the top five is the same reason why other GMs aren't going to trade a top five pick for two from the bottom half. Maybe something closer to the 10th pick? But I think this year that's probably the best you're going to do.

In some ways I feel like with these deals it's going to feel inevitably like we're taking an L right off the bat. But as @sharks_dynasty says, one benefit would be that making these trades could help secure our pick landing in the top five. It's a frustrating position to be in, but I guess at this point it's just about making the best of it, even if the best doesn't sound great.

What kinda dumb reasoning/logic is that second paragraph? Even if they were UFAs at the end of the season, they don’t “have” to trade anyone
Because it's pretty awkward when you sit someone while trying to trade them and just decide not to trade them and then have to insert them back in the lineup at some point this year or next. At least with a FA, the tenure is done at the end of the year.

It's a threat, but unfortunately that threat rings hollow now that we don't have Mike Potenza.

Brutal critique from Mike McKenna on the goaltending situation since ~2018ish. Fair points that most people here have talked about before though. Seems to think Speers is okay though, who is technically our most well trained goalie "coach".

Nobody is moving out of the top four for sure. I doubt anyone would move out of the top ten this year. If we get an extra couple of 1st round picks, we might be able to move them from the 20+ that they will be into the teens but I wouldn't even bother. If we don't get Bedard, nobody else is worth fast-tracking anything.
why didn't we trade riemer for a second last deadline? sigh
If a second was available, he would've been dealt. Nobody offered a 2nd for Reimer and probably won't offer a 3rd either this season.

Hypothetically speaking. Would you give Meier to the Knights if you knew that they would go on to win the stanley cup but the Sharks got their next 20 1st rd draft picks?
It isn't enough that the Sharks should succeed. Others should fail.
