Are physicals a thing in trades? (I assume they are for free agents.) Could a team want to trade for him, but get a doctor's report and find a problem and back out, like what the Giants and Mets did with Correa?

They are in baseball, I see no reason that they wouldn't be in the NHL.

I don't think I've ever heard of a contract being cancelled because a team had issue with the physical. It happens in baseball a fair amount. I know it's a bit different because a pitcher for instance has one body part that is valuable and it needs to be healthy whereas hockey players pride themselves on being banged up and playing through it.

I feel like it’s only been in situations where their health was in serious doubt, i.e. Eichel’s whole thing.

This isn't quite the same but interesting nonetheless. Article is from 2008.

I'm surprised no Warriors fan has chimed in to add this NBA example from the past week. It's an interesting case because you wouldn't normally think something would be hidden like this when a guy was playing right up to the trade deadline for his old team: Gary Payton II Rumors | Hoops Rumors

Sounds like Portland wanted him gone and tried to pull a fast one on GSW.

It’s kind of interesting that Karlsson at age 32 and having major injury concerns can potentially get two solid top 4 defenseman in Barrie and Bouchard. With Bouchard being a young very analytically solid defenseman coming off his ELC along with a first round pick and perhaps a 2nd first round pick. While on the other hand Meier is getting offers of a late 1st and a not great but solid prospect in Holtz when Meier is 26, an elite PWF and has at least 2 years of playoff runs for the acquiring team. I understand Meier has a 10 million qualifying offer but that is a fair contract. People are comparing him to Stone and other high end forwards traded at the deadline but they were all pending UFAs whereas Meier is an RFA. He shouldn’t be getting rental value especially when there is talk that teams that acquire him may turn around and trade him again in the summer for a 1st round pick and good prospect. You can’t do that with most players traded at the deadline.

Is today the day for Meier? hm.
Considering NJD said they want the Sharks to reach out to them to have the last chance to trade for Meier, I'd imagine he doesn't get dealt until very close to the deadline. NJ seems keen on getting the deal done, and if Grier has to back check to see if they want to make a bigger offer than someone else, it could go back and forth.

Our 1st
Edmontons 1st, prospects and or players
Devils 1st, prospects and or players

if we walk into draft night with that kind of cache of picks, and a cupboard of prospects looking to breakout, I think we could head into the summer a younger, hungrier team, that will compete for a lot of wins in no time.

If we walked into the draft with three firsts and they were all outside the top 5, I'd join the "fire MG" chorus. That's a whole lot of wheeling, dealing and getting worse at hockey just to pick the future middle-6 guys who'd play with the stars we don't have.

If we trade Meier and Karlsson we have a very good bet to draft in the top-5 with our pick. Having those other assets and first round picks would greatly accelerate our rebuild.

Neither Meier nor Karlsson were drafted top-5, and while the top-5 is the easiest place to find a star...when you have 3 first round picks + other prospects it all comes down to your scouts nailing a pick.

Whether we draft in the top-5 this year/trade Meier or Karlsson or not we will be finishing bottom-10 in the NHL the next few years anyway. There is lot's of time to draft a star somewhere along the way. Let's worry about actually drafting some good players before we worry about them playing with/being stars.

Ours might be in the top 5 but if you think Karlsson or Meier are fetching a top 10 pick even, you’re going to be disappointed.

Hypothetically speaking. Would you give Meier to the Knights if you knew that they would go on to win the stanley cup but the Sharks got their next 20 1st rd draft picks?

Absolutely. We’ve already seen the kings reverse sweep us and go win the cup. Vegas winning would be a minor blip compared to that.

Plus, them not having a 1st for 20 years would absolutely cripple them in the future.

How do you propose he gets a top-5 pick from another team, though? The only teams trading for our guys aren't going to be in the lottery so it's pretty much impossible--which is not exactly a fair standard to set for your expectations of your GM.

I certainly understand the bad feelings that go along with trading away your best players; I'll miss watching Timo and Karl a lot if they're dealt, too. But as much as it pains me to admit, it's likely best for the long-term health of the franchise to move those guys along--even if it's not for "fair" value in terms of the return--because it's not like this current team is doing much of anything with them. Might as well turn toward the future instead.

If he's able to get two-plus firsts out of Timo and Karl, I'd expect him to use those to move into the top 5. Walking into this draft with multiple firsts and no chance at a superstar would feel like a loss to me. If there was ever a draft to go big or go home, this is it.
