Speculation: 2022-23 Sharks Roster Discussion Part II

I just read an interview with Karlsson and one of the questions started like this:

While the Sharks have never released the specifics of your contract, there have been various reports suggesting it carries an average annual value of $11.5 million over its duration.

Um, yes? There isn't any question the contract has a 11.5 AAV.

  • Haha
Reactions: Shark Finn
2024 1st + Lorhei. Sharks turn around and deal Pastrnak as a rental to make up the rest of the value.

Basically nothing that would benefit the Bruins and there’s no way that Pastrnak would sign with the Sharks or that the Sharks would give him that contract. And Pastrnak is one of my favorite players in the league.

You don't see him signing to be with Hertl for 12 million?

From Fourth Period:

  • More on Ottawa: On Friday, I wrote about the Senators trying to move Zaitsev and willing to sweeten the pot. Some teams being discussed include Anaheim and San Jose, depending on their other moves. And no, I do not believe the Senators are a serious contender for Karlsson.

What would it take for us to eat his contract? A 2nd? I like that Grier seems to be all in on optimizing what we have available and jump starting this rebuild.

I'd take Zaitsev easily, can get an asset for the cap and he makes us worse

It's a no brainer honestly
Which one of our defensemen is he worse than? I have not watched him much. I am all in for taking on cap on expiring contracts for picks.

He's kind of an older Ferraro.

If Karlsson is traded before next season and they traded for Zaitsev, they could roll with:

Vlasic-Benning
Ferraro-Zaitsev
Cicek-McDonald

32nd in the league D group that is.

That'd be a sharp move from Grier.

Is it unrealistic to think that if the Sharks trade Karlsson with decent retention that they should be getting a high end prospect back?

Well, according to the same article I posted, they have two potential deals in place for Karlsson that include multiple firsts. You know, if any of that is true…

I feel like it’s not unreasonable with retention to get a high end prospect, no. He’s the best defenseman in the league right now and I think Grier is very intent on not giving him away for pennies. Even as a business move; Karlsson is the only reason to go watch Sharks games right now. Without him… the fans need something/someone else to watch and look forward to…

Isn't it crazy to think that they could get something of value back for Karl? Two years ago the thought of that was laughable. I can't see them getting multiple firsts, but it just goes to show that even the biggest "worst" contracts can be of interest to teams if the player is playing according to it.

Yeah, I remember Sheng on his podcast discussing how he’d take a 7th for Karlsson just to get out of that contract last year. Which was not a bad take at all! I mean, if nothing else, we’ve been treated to a special season from Karlsson.

It's crazy how the turns have tabled

I think around the same time, sheng said the market for taking on MEV44's contract was roughly a 1st for each remaining year

Swap Labanc for Zaitsev.

Wouldn't be the worst move. I don't know if any coach would want him on the 3rd line though and Ottawa has Batherson and Giroux. Besides, if you're Grier, knowing the team is going to be bottom-out bad for the next two years (at least), wouldn't you want to take a draft pick to get Zaitsev and just ride out Labanc's deal? With Timo and EK gone it's not like they'll need the cap room next season.
