Speculation: 2022-23 Sharks Roster Discussion Part II

Wouldn't be the worst move. I don't know if any coach would want him on the 3rd line though and Ottawa has Batherson and Giroux. Besides, if you're Grier, knowing the team is going to be bottom-out bad for the next two years (at least), wouldn't you want to take a draft pick to get Zaitsev and just ride out Labanc's deal? With Timo and EK gone it's not like they'll need the cap room next season.
If we move Karlsson to Edmonton, getting paid a 2nd to take Zaitsev pre bonus is likely the best move for us but if it’s a swap, that’s fine too.

Basically exactly what I thought it would be but I’ve seen reports that Edmonton is asking for 40% retention and my answer to that is f*** off.

I assume they're opposed to it just for the money side and Burns is already retained a good amount. This team is going to be bottom-out bad for the next two years, maybe three and the only big(ish) contract guy they would have in the next four will be Eklund if all goes well and the potential high 1st this year. Anyway I still think a move is more likely at the draft, but if Holland doesn't feel like his team is strong enough entering the playoffs he might feel pressure to not waste another McDavid season and give them some elite help. And from Grier's end, trading Erik now increases the chances Edmonton makes the final four and decreases his draft pick.

Let’s hope McDavid is demanding immediate help. I think the fact that the Oilers came back to the Sharks is a very good sign. If that package is at all close and we manage that + a good Meier return, that’s a damn good beginning to the rebuild and gives us the start of a really fun, young team with some vets to help guide them along.

Are you worried that Karlsson might "relapse"? Because it isn't a year ago...Karlsson's value should be gigantic. He'd instantly make Edmonton one of the best teams in the league.
Absolutely. His contract isn't great either way and the longer you wait, the more you risk of it looking worse and worse. If a team is willing to give up good assets for him right now, take it. Bourgault is whatever but Bouchard is legit, plus we have the chance to have three 1sts this year (if the Meier trade also goes through), which is huge in a deep draft.

A late first, struggling defensive prospect, and a ho-hum center prospect...not exactly intriguing.

Unless the pick is in 2024 and Edmonton pulls a Sharks 2019-20, of course it's going to be a late first. It's like getting a 1st for Meier - any team trading for him is a playoff team so .... yeah. Bouchard put up over 40 points last season (PP aided I'm sure) and would get bigger minutes with the Sharks and a chance at becoming a decent top pair guy.

If I'm the oilers I try and get a rental D like Klingberg and then push for Karl next year.

But if Holland is really pushing then Grier should ask for the moon. Bouchard and broberg and a first (+salary dumps) for Karl and Barabanov.

I’m not worried that Karl will relapse, I’m worried that he’ll get hurt. I’m worried that he’ll continue to keep us from truly bottoming out. Obviously you want to maximize your return, but I don’t think you can blame any of us for being skittish given his last couple of years. The sooner we trade him the better, because he is that good that every game matters, and because if he gets seriously hurt again he might lose all the value he’s gained this season, don’t you think?
