Arizona is exactly two spots behind us in the standings. So much for trying to win.
By the way, no one is calling for us to be Arizona, and no one expects to win anything in 2 years. I'd just like to watch a smartly run competitive hockey team before I die, which is not currently the track the team is on, and I'm only in my 40's. Also, weren't you rambling on about not wanting the team to be bad for 20 or 25 years, meanwhile, we're already more than halfway there? Now you're gonna try to claim the high ground on patience?
This team is in quicksand. The more it vainly thrashes around to try to get out of it, the more it sinks and the harder it is to climb out. It needs a complete overhaul in management and in its guiding organizational philosophy or else we're going to end up suffocated.
At this rate, Arizona is our future. That's exactly what this brain trust is driving the team into. We'll have neither cap space, nor a good roster, nor a good farm system, nor any draft picks left, nor any interest left over from a decaying fanbase in what is arguably the most competitive sports market in the country with 4 other teams (that's right, there's a fourth now) all more competitive and better run and a better investment for your time and money. Once we bottom out--and we will eventually--we're going to have to initiate a rebuild because no other path will even be available to us. All that will have been accomplished is that we will have kicked that particular can down the road 5 years, needlessly wasting 5 years of all of our lives on an unwatchable product with no hope.
