Lycksell is an awkward fit right now, Desnoyers would be easier to put on a 4th line (move Brown to RW).
Makes me wonder if they chose Lycksell simply to let him get his feet wet for a few games before he steps in for JVR after he's traded in a week or two.

My point with Ginning is simply that there are a lot of big, physical D-men with limited skills who've carved out long careers in the NHL, Luke Schenn for example. He doesn't have to be dynamic, he does have to be consistent, know his limitations and play within them. Ginning has functional mobility, he makes good outlet passes, he blocks shots. His ceiling is 3rd pair D-man, but the same can be said about Zamula, who isn't dynamic enough for the top 4 right now.

Attard is more of a wild card, he has top four offensive skills, but has to be a lot more trustworthy on defense. Not going to carry play, but he could be a serious threat in the O-zone with the right partner.

Problem is you could get by with Risto or Attard at 2RHD, but you don't want either one at 1RHD.
TDA can't play defense and Ellis has left the building.
So either York stays at 1RHD for the indefinite future or they need to find one.
Just play the best players. It isn't that hard

With young players, you like to put them in a position to succeed, not throw too much at them at once.
Switching sides for a young player can mess with some of them.
Depends on the player, Cates has adjusted to center, and York to RHD, but that's not the norm.

Small sample, but I have yet to see anything I like from Lycksell at the NHL level.

He can make very tight turns, that’s about it.

Otherwise, he looks like a ‘tweener who doesn’t have the time & space to play an offensive game in the NHL, & lacks the speed & strength to make an impact in other aspects.

Weird year for TDA.
Started 2 years in NY, 1 in Car, 1 here

pp/60: 1.09, 1.74, 1.50, 0.88
xGF: 47.86%, 47.24%, 56.13%, 41.28%
GF%: 54.80%, 57.16%, 66.71%, 43.07%
xGF/60: 2.56, 2.65, 3.31, 2.41
xGA/60: 2.79, 2.96, 2.59, 3.43
GF/60: 3.04, 3.25, 3.94, 2.25
GA/60: 2.50, 2.44, 1.97, 2.91

xGFrel: +1.04, +1.20, +1.56, -7.00
xGF/60rel: 0.32, 0.38, 0.29, 0.11
xGA/60rel: 0.24, 0.29, 0.08, 0.97

The impact of Slavin last year was to clean up the bad mistakes TDA is prone to make
CF with 56.54% without 55.55%
minutes 684, 265
GF 67.27%, 71. 81%
xGF 60.25%, 49.51%
HDCF 60.83%, 48.24%

Interesting thing with TDA is the actual production consistently exceeded expected production until he came to Philly.
His play without Slavin seems similar to what he did in NY.
For some reason he's really struggling this season, but I'd expect a rebound next season, which would set him up as trade bait at the 2024 TDL.

If we can recoup the second I'll be happy

It's actually pretty normal. You pretended it wasn't to defend Hakstol and AV and when they refused to even try such things to create the best lineup.

You can put the players in position to succeed by not treating them like the Flyers do. Give them rope. Understand their situation and usage. Let them play their game and make mistakes without being terrified of being sent back down for another year.

You say that like this couldn't have been predicted a mile away.
It couldn't. I don't think anyone reasonable expected him to play here like he did paired with Slavin, but it was reasonable to expect him to play like he did in NY and without Slavin, where he was a solid, if limited, offensive specialist.

He has really fallen off the cliff here, don't really understand why, maybe they asked him to do too much, maybe he's just trying to hard to impress in front of family and friends.

TDA until this year was pretty much Ghost post 2017-18, slightly worse metrics, better actual production
Better offensively, worse defensively.

Ghost last five seasons:
pp/60: 0.91, 0.42, 0.82, 1.35, 1.00
xGF 49.70%, 47.18%, 52.28%, 43.21%, 43.01%
xGFrel +1.80%, -4.47%, +0.81, +0.67, +1.37
xGF/60: 2.30, 2.19, 2.27, 2.25, 2.25
GF 42.00%, 47.73%, 52.24%, 43.28%, 46.67%
GF/60: 2.13, 2.04, 3.18, 2.45, 2.51

Both are players I'd use on the 3rd pair and as a PP1 specialist and on offensive zone face offs.

Just for fun, Risto the last five years:

pp/60: 0.89, 0.76, 0.57, 0.65, 0.56
xGF 48.34%, 45.36%, 44.04%, 46.46%, 47.71%
xGFrel -0.21, -3.39, -2.61, +1.88, +0.56
xGF/60: 2.31, 1.95, 1.96, 2.50, 2.27
GF 40.80%, 50.00%, 34.72%, 48.65%, 48.39%
GF/60: 2.15, 2.44, 1.78, 2.70, 2.41
