2022/23 Roster Thread XV: Where Optional Skates are Mandatory

Who cares. No one liked the Risto trade or extension, but at this point the horse is now flayed, boiled, turned into shoes . . .
And Fletcher is dead man walking, odds are about when he'll be fired/promoted to an office w/o a window or phone.

If I've learned one thing about life, whining about the past is a great way to make yourself feel miserable.
The present team is painful and the future is gloomy. Whining about the past is the happiest we're going to get around here.

I have no idea why Sam thought that would be a good idea.

Look! It’s Sam:

Meanwhile, TDA just put two excellent games together that showed his elite offensive skills.
If you could restrain his rover tendencies and/or find a LHD who could cover for him, he has real value.
Unfortunately, I don't think Provorov or Sanheim fit the bill, maybe York.

Yeah maybe a 3rd 1st rd Dman will be the answer since the other 2 can't cut it. Or maybe it's just that ADA is so bad defensively, unless you are a top defensive Dman in this league, you can't cover all his mistakes.

And Torts told York he could be more of a rover.....how does that match well with ADA?

Fletcher gave up a ton of assets to acquire Stinktolainen. The guy bombs in Philadelphia, several teams were interested at the trade deadline and were WILLING to give up a first round pick and Schmuck decided to double down and re-sign the league's worst top four defender for five years. And now we have a coaching staff that is basically teaching Ass-To-Mouth how to play defense. This is a move that sinks a franchise. So yeah, it is a big deal. It's a sign of how poorly managed this club is and how there's no checks and balances in place.

I’d love to know what the analytics team was doing around the time of the signing.

Finding ways to stay employed, just like the validation for trading assets for TDA - that Chuck specifically mentioned them in.

York was playing it too safe, but I think he has a higher IQ than Provorov or Sanheim.
Provorov is really concerning, he hasn't played well with any partner this year.
Strangely enough, Risto has been much better paired with Seeler or Sanheim than with Provorov.

It's a pain to deal with, but "sink the franchise?"
Nah, it takes a decade of bad moves and drafts to sink a franchise.

You can live with Risto on your 3rd pair easier than living with Provorov on your 1st pair.

You're underestimating how terrible Ristolainen is. You can't live with this guy on the roster anywhere.

If the Tortorella purely reasonable and fair accountability you made up actually existed, he'd already be in the AHL.

Provorov hasn't played well on a consistent basis with anyone since his time with Niskanen. That's more than a little alarming. There''s just so much time that one can blame it on his partner. Time to move him on. There are teams that need defensemen. He still has the rep for being a top four if not top two d-man. He should still be able to bring a decent return.

I have no idea why Sam thought that would be a good idea.

Sam would probably say he’s trying to protect his profession or some shit by not letting coaches or players skip out on pressers. But in reality he’s poking a bear for reaction. He’s a shit stirrer & he knows Tortorella is very likely to take the bait eventually in public way.

Being ignored…. Same as when they signed Deslauriers to a 4 year deal.

I don’t buy it personally.

I think there is data found, and used to justify moves that are made. If indeed they are at odds over so many critical mistakes that have clearly occurred, they aren’t skilled enough at communicating.

I can’t for a second defend the analytics department. Just as complicit, and all too happy to go with the flow of things to ensure a paycheque.

Well they would basically be the only analytical group to value the Risto and Deslauriers types. Considering they brought outsiders in, that’s just not a likely scenario. But I also recognize there are lots of private datasets that are not available to the public…so I guess it is possible that they are using some model that shows these crappy players have value.

But honestly, it’s most likely Fletch is just not listening to them. He talked about wanting Risto for years. We know he loves the perceived hard workers, low event players.

I can say from conversation with the Flyers’ CBO that the reason they brought Risto back was because “whatever it is when he’s paired with Sanheim it just works.” That was something that he heard when talking one of the big guys in the analytic department. I forget the name he gave me but I’m pretty sure it was THE guy.

Now whether the analytic department just had a gun to their head and were told to “justify this” is another question.
