No real reason for this poist, but......

I know we're like 30 games into the season, but I still can't believe the Flyers signed Nic Deslauriers to a 4 year deal. He's the worst forward in the NHL and it's not even close.
Incoming “it’s not a big deal, they can just bury him in the minors. Now Weise… THAT was a horrible deal.” post.

The Weise deal did not work out, but at least there was theoretical chance of him playing on a 3rd line and being an offensive contributor. Deslauriers can't do anything but waddle around for nine minutes on a 4th line, no matter how many top 9 forwards get injured.

Hayes and TK have similarly poor defensive numbers this season, so I won’t be surprised if the next fight Torts picks is with Konecny. He’s already benched him for a whole period.
Charlie mentioned Konecny on the latest pod. Said he sought out Torts after the benching and had a long discussion with the coach, and the coach has since been pleased with his effort and is rewarding him with minutes.

You didn't mention he has a modified NTC for the first 2 years. That's my favorite part.

I got a chuckle at some writer (ASP?) floating that Briere wanted him too. Maybe it's true, but Lombardi drafted Deslauriers, and he fits Fletcher's wet dream idea of a 4th line. In the end, guys who run a billion dollar corporation put their heads together, used all their resources, and came up with this contract.

I mentioned this in the summer, but Weise's contract covered ages 28-31. He didn't make it past 30. It was a bad contract with a lack of understanding the player (I wanted Marchessault *pats back*), but Deslaurier's 4 year deal STARTS at age 31. These fringe guys fall off a f***ing cliff.

I don't think AV was vindictive, but he was stubborn, once he made his mind up about a player, that was it. And he was distant.

Torts gives players second chances, he comes off tougher than he is, because he doesn't engage in the "cliche game," and pretty much says what's on his mind - he's probably more like the fans than he should be (though he hasn't reach the John McKay level yet, “What do you think of your team’s execution coach?” To which McKay replied, “I’m in favor of it.”)
I’ll go against AV not being vindictive. Moving out Ghost and Jake because they weren’t being developed/used properly are the hallmarks of a prick.
Ghost and Jake’s play had holes in it because they were being used in ways that played to their weaknesses and ignored their strengths. Injuries also hurt their games. However instead of working through that Martini Man and his souse of a buddy, Therrien, just tossed these guys to the curb at a cost to the club.

The difference with Torts is he gives players second and third chances, and is patient with them if they're trying to improve. That's why he treats TK and Tippett different than Hayes (as well as upside), they're flying out there, making mistakes but also making plays, back checking hard, chasing pucks on the forecheck. Hayes is just focused on scoring and is half-assing the rest of his game, that will fly on some teams (a number of scoring forwards that are lax on defense making big money) but not with Torts.

DH hit this one. I think that Hayes felt that with G gone that he was the leader of this team (never considered that other players were more deserving). His nose has been out of joint ever since Torts refused to name a captain (him) this year. Hayes is a selfish loser and has been throughout his career. That Fletcher went off the ledge to sign this guy just shows how devoid of evaluation skills the GM is

Not sure a goalie would have that type of value. All depends on the team as 2 late first may not be that appealing.

Here is the thing after 2023/24 he will need a new long term big money deal. Figure 8 years at what 6 million per (or more) at age 26. Where does that line up with when this team may start to contend. Flyers are in such a bad spot all one can do is laugh.

TK and Ivan also free agents after 2025. Should they commit 8 year deals to those 2 at age 28 (I think)?
Gotta think, young elite goalies don't hit the market often, and when they do, they're worth alot

Even if he is a selfish loser, the coach should be able to work with the player.

It’s beyond lazy, arrogant, and archaic - for Torts to put the team into a situation where he not only craters the players limited trade value, but also forces the team to carry a cap hit because of a buyout?

Tortorella is just an asshole, that cannot handle things not going exactly his way. Hayes is not the best defensively. Perhaps if more “accountability” was placed on offensive responsibility.

Watching the Avs play, one can see the system in place even with a boatload of injuries. Tortorella has managed to absolve himself of all blame, and put it directly on Chuck + the players.

He’s not wrong in a sense, but he’s a fraud that has one trick up his sleeve. Tough love. Flyers development 2022. He’s a f***ing loser imo.

Imagine being a GM for this dumbass, he needs to be coddled to have his ideal lineup or he pulls shit like this. Torts is nothing but a loudmouth baby.

Goalies do tend to have less value, but I'd think a team that's not in rebuild mode without a clear answer in net either now or in the pipeline-like maybe LA or St. Louis- might be willing to pay up.

On the current roster I can see only two acceptable captains. Laughton and Konecny. Everyone else either lacks experience, has the wrong personality, or has no personality.
