Looking through the buyout calculator on Capfriendly - the Ellis buyout this off-season doesn't look awful. It's definitely not great, but you get 4 years of decent cap savings before 4 years of a $2mm cap hit. Not sure what else you can do with this contract (if you can even buyout an injured player?) because carrying this cap hit during the off-season and essentially being forced to use LTIR for 4 years seems problematic.

On the opposite end, Couturier's is pretty bad....we all hope he can come back and just be a player at this point, but two years of not playing due to back injuries is not looking good.

Risto's potential buyout isn't awful either but you're probably better off just sticking him at 3RD and riding it out/eventually trading him.

Hayes is in the same boat as Risto's.
fold the franchise n start over when new expansion comes in...

The Flyers shouldn’t be buying anyone out. They made their bed now sleep in it.

I'd have to go back and check for many years, but there's a strong chance that Fletcher leads all active GMs in number of contracts requiring buyout. He's had a lot. In the early 2010s they were a nearly annual occurrence, and that's not even counting the mistake contracts he had dad's friends take on as a favor, removing need for buyout.

If the player agrees, I think you can.

Now why a player that is never going to play again would accept a buyout is another question.
You might be right. Been a while since I looked at it.

If one was certain they wouldn't play again, would it be worth losing 1/3 of the remaining salary to be able to just go home and wash your hands of everything? Depends on the player, but I'm sure some might be willing just to not have to deal with team doctors and whatnot that should be needed for the LTIR process.

Flyers have no business buying out contracts, that's a "win now" move to reduce the cap hit the next few years at the cost of a cap hit in out years - a rebuilding team should have cap room to spare during the rebuild, but doesn't want to waste it in out years when they have to start extending their young and upcoming players and maybe add a piece or two to finish the job.

Now is the perfect time to clean house , and I mean everyone. Even the Authentics would buy in.
That's exactly the wrong attitude - making hasty decisions based on emotion.

What's needed is a cold blooded killer as GM, who makes decisions based on long-term value, not "I'm gonna dump all of my predecessor's mistakes and disregard the cost" approach.

Based on emotions? What are you going on about? This team is horrible. They have no prospects. No cap space. No contract space. Little to no NHL talent.

The entire franchise is rotten. YOU have stated this.

Now it’s not the right path?

If you're talking FO personnel, yes, they need to clean out some deadwood. Especially scouts and personnel executives who've had lifetime tenure regardless of performance. And of course the senior advisors.

If you're talking players, you don't waste assets or cap room just to get rid of players.

Hayes is a good example, if people ask for a 1st or 2nd rd pick to take him with 50% retained, thanks but no thanks.
At worst, you eat another season even if you have to waive him to LHV.

With Risto, you let Shaw work with him, if he can become a reliable 3rd pair D-man who adds physicality to a roster, then some team might take him in two years with a couple million retained (or a veteran contract the other way), i.e. on a 3x3 deal.

The NHL holiday roster freeze starts tonight and runs through December 27. This would be the ideal time to can Fletcher and let Briere step in.

Oh Hayes is pretty typical of a lot of offense first players.
It's partially a product of a system where you get paid for offense, so players focus on stat padding rather than doing the little things that help your team win, b/c some team will overpay for your numbers.
Even in the age of analytics, scorers still get overvalued. And that leads to bad habits that are hard to change.
You can carry one or two of these guys if you have the right players around them, but the Flyers aren't that blessed.

Torts doesn't expect Hayes to be good on defense, but at least don't be a glaring liability.
You can play solid defense and be a top scorer, Point, Nico, Bergeron has done that for over a decade. Couts here.
At worst, you can at least try on defense.

This isn't a hasty decision. This decision has been clear for numerous years now. It's also very rational.

I can't get over how f***ing embarrassing all these people are. The Yandle thing is just absurd.

Former player for the team as of last year; only had a job because his best friend plays for the team and the GM bozo who signed that guy loves him. Allowed to play atrocious hockey for months to pursue a personal record--even though it was doomed to fall within months.

That best friend continues to play some half-ass country club bullshit. The new coach--who for all his faults seems to be the only one in the organization willing to call out the bozo GM--sits him for a game.

So Class Act Locker Room Guy Keith takes it on himself to publicly undermine the new coach on behalf of his close friend, still the team's highest-paid player. Man, what a great look for the franchise! Hey, what a great f***ing message to send to all those young players YOU WERE LITERALLY IN THE ROOM WITH LAST SEASON. That's the example boys. That's how you Get It Done.

I mean, at the end of the day I hate all of these guys and it doesn't matter. But really f***ing shows how stupid the people running this show are to elevate these guys as Locker Room Leaders (at the expense of goddamn Claude Giroux) and what entitled childish pricks that Yandy/Hayesy gang is. Go start a podcast where you try to figure out how to pronounce the letter "R" or something.

We were told Giroux, Voracek, and Ghost were the locker room problems.

Since they've left, we've seen what REAL problems look like.

Anyone even remember those former three being benched for lazy play? Or having their friends roast the coach on social media? Or any other proof of them being bad teammates or lazy players, other than the fact that they weren't able to win a cup all by themselves while the team as a whole was awful?

Ghost for sloppy play, making bad decisions, numerous times.
Jake for being out of shape, not back checking, not playing defense.

G is a totally different category than those two, the only critics were a few internet idiots, he didn't take plays off, was responsible on defense, work his ass off in the offseason.
