Hey, Sabres fan here. Just curious - how has Risto been looking lately? I always loved him and felt like he needed a Torts-like coach. Now that he has one, I’m curious if it’s helping at all.

He’s always been extremely athletic with a ton of potential…just never put it together consistently in Buffalo. Is he improving this season under torts?
He’s absolutely horrible.

Arguably the worst contract/player in the league.

His skillset looks like if you tried to mine Bitcoin with a turkey leg. In other words, he's a very unique player.

Death, taxes, and Sanhero leading the defense in 5v5 points. Well, tied. He's 13th in the NHL (out of 70 with > 400 minutes) in 5v5 points/60 for defensemen. With scraps on the PP, he's only 1 and 2 total points back of Provorov and DeAngelo. Can't imagine giving him PP time though when Provorov just got his 2nd PP point (secondaries) feeding Laughton for a telegraphed one timer from Neptune that missed by 3 feet.

I double checked and Risto (and Braun) are 229/229 in 5v5 points/60 with > 1 minute. Do many teams have half their top 4 defenders with 0 points?

He's the worst defensemen in the NHL.

Nice straw man, they’re here for defense. Don’t you know how any of this works?

From Charlie’s piece in The Athletic:

So is it a rebuild now, Chuck Fletcher?
“Again, there are labels,” he responded about 45 minutes later in a separate session. “I think if you look at it, we have worked at some young pieces over the last few years, we’ve talked over the last couple of years about needing more high-end talent, we’ve certainly tried to address some of that through the draft. So we have certainly tried to be aggressive in adding some young talent. And we’ve tried to find a way to add some pieces here to keep us competitive. So I’m not sure what the label is for that.”

Hmm… how about “try-hard,” Chuck?

They've tried to be aggressive in adding young talent through the draft by trading away picks in the 1st and 2nd rounds over the past two years. Yeah, that's aggressive(ly) something, alright.

But wasn't he ruined by the Flyers development plan? :DD

In the metric that a team needs to compete which is value over cap hit sanheim is Exactly why the flyers development strategy sucks. I'm not saying he's over paid but on the years we could have gotten big value out of him he was about where he should have been.
