Yup
With a rookie Mario Lemieux, the Pens put a whopping 53 points. And Bedard ain’t Mario Lemieux. Even if they replaced everyone in management with competent people tomorrow they are a minimum of 3 years and probably closer to 5 years away from being good. Yes, it’s that bad.

With how depleted they are of picks and assets to flip, dead cap space for years to come, and with nothing high end in the coffers, 5 years might be underselling it, sadly. Even the good players on this team will be in their 30s and in UFA contract territory. Any chance to expedite this is long gone.

Fletcher took over in Minnesota in the summer of 2009, the next three seasons they missed the playoffs with records of 84, 86, 81. So I'd call that a rebuild, not only did his teams make the playoffs 6 straight seasons, but after Fenton leaked value, there was enough left to turn it around in one season.

They've made the playoffs 9 of 10 seasons, including seasons of 98, 100, 106, 101 with him at the helm. The one season they missed was Fenton's only season in charge, he was then canned. He got them to the second round twice, the current GM has yet to get out of the first round.

2009: Leddy #16, Kuemper G #161, Haula #182
2010: Grandlund #9, Larsson #56, Tucker #59
2011: Brodin #10, Seeler #131
2012: Dumba #7
2013: traded 1st rd pick, 2nd rd pick 2014, Matt Hackett, Johan Larsson, for Jason Pominville and a 4th rd pick in 2014 at the TDL
2014: Tuch #18, Belpido #81, Kahkonen G #109
2015: Eriksson Ek #20, Greenway #50, Kaprizov #135

Fletcher's biggest problem is trades, he's generally not good at them, especially "win now" moves.

@Captain Dave Poulin -- any chance for an updated GIF?

Never at any point in Minnesota did Fletcher conduct a rebuild. You're pretending a thing that didn't happen happened. He relied heavily on trades and signings he usually lost, and without the old buyout rules and daddy's friends willing to do him favors his tenure in Minnesota would have ended a lot faster.

Fletcher actually leaked more value than Fenton. A ton more. That team is still recovering from Fletcher's tenure. Fenton delayed it a year, but they still have a way to go before they're clear of Fletcher's disaster.

Fletcher's problem is drafting. And trades. And free agency. There isn't any aspect of the job that hasn't been a constant problem for him.

Hey, you guys know how stuff like the TDA trade is depicted as being a move made prior to the Flyers Renaissance ordered by Tortorella after he was hired and told Fletcher how to do his job by mandating a rebuild?

Here's a reminder that pick-burning win-now move was made almost a month after Tortorella was hired.
Timelines. How silly.

What do you want? This guy is Makar like on the offensive side of the puck (I believe this was a take). He’s the kind of guy that you can build around. Do you expect them to only play prospects?! The Avs didn’t do that.

So they decided to rebuild and then signed Justin Braun and gave a fighter 4 years of full UFA market value starting in his Age 32 season? And traded away picks to give a contract to TDA that takes him to UFA in 2 years?

I think that might be worse than just getting the evaluations wrong.

So ownership approved a rebuild after every potential coaching hire told them they were going to suck for the next few years. So they weren't planning it out of any foresight, only because their "mandate to win" failed spectacularly. How that wouldn't get Chuck fired on the spot is...interesting.

They aren't rebuilding, they don't know how. Their version of a rebuild is, hire Torts to "coach the right way" and expect the team to turn around through sheer try hardness. The rest of their moves, on ice and off, have been nothing different than what we've seen for years now. Same old same old in Flyerland.

Allow me to make sense of this. Braun was signed to insulate the youth like Seeler; Deslauriers was signed to protect the youth’s honor and flesh in this rebuild; and TDA was signed to teach the youth morality lessons and determine if Provorov is a core piece.

All of these moves were about the long-term.

If Tortorella made this super weird and yelled things like “protect the youth’s honor and flesh” in interviews between periods, I would watch the games again. I don’t think I’m alone.

Get it done, Val.

Corporate vs private is more bullshit that people like to say to make themselves sound smart. The person in charge and the money behind the org determine what people want to see happen.

Awful lot of people angry with a marketing team. Not everything has to be for you.

The well-run MiLB teams have historically done a much better job of marketing themselves than NHL teams while we're at it. Those orgs have to in order to survive.

I really don't think people understand how much money Gritty has made them.
I don’t care about the marketing team and I don’t care about Gritty…

HOWEVER

… the person who runs the teams Twitter account deserves unspeakable things. The “Cahtah Haht” bullshit alone…

They can get rid of #FueledByPhilly and replace it with #LongLiveTheNewFlesh. It can be on hats and t-shirts available for purchase. Fletcher can do his mid-season press conference, and when asked if this is a rebuild or retool, he can say, “We’re re-fleshing, Charlie.”

This will positively tickle Biff.
