They were down to the dregs last season, with Couts out, Brassard out, Laczynski and Allison out, not much available.
7 forwards, then Lindblom, who unfortunately was (and still is) a shell of the player he was pre-cancer and Frost.

4th line was the following grope:
Mayhew, Willman, Brown, MacEwen, Thompson, Bunnaman, Ratcliffe.

Deslauriers, Sedlak and Laczysnki are a big upgrade, and not surprisingly, MacEwen looks better when he isn't playing with dregs - he's not going to carry a line, but he can complement real players.

Before the kids arrived (and Cates - Frost - TIppett):
Frost minutes:
JVR 149
TK 131
Lindblom 122
Willman 109
Mayhew 98
Atkinson 90
Giroux 71

He was spared the joy of playing with Brown, Thompson, Bunnaman and MacEwen.
So let me get this straight, all of the sudden you're going to excuse players for playing terrible because they're playing with terrible linemates?

You are aware that you've crucified young players for not providing anything while playing with those same dregs for years, right?

This does not change the fact that MacEwen did not pass any single eye test last year by anyone that doesn't have an agenda which is what this entire conversation started as.

What young players?
Frost hasn't played with dregs. Lindblom, Allison, etc.
The real prospects get opportunities, but if you're a marginal player, you'd better be able to play on the 4th line.
4th line guys should be judged by how they play v the 12th forward standard.

Take VdV, a favorite whipping boy around here;
Consistently mediocre, pp/60: 1.27, 0.76, 1.01, xGF% 45.89, 43.38, 48.46, xGFrel -3.34, -7.73, -1.61.
So we can consider him the NHL equivalent of the "Mendoza" line.

The year after he goes, Weise, Lehtera, Filppula put up worse metrics, Weal, Leier have a short life.
The following season, Vorobyev, Knight, Varone,
Vorobyev plays 35 games over two seasons, pp/60: 0.95, xGFrel -14.00. So he was below the VdV line! In the same role.
Same with Bunnaman, Twarynski, et al.

Deslauriers has generally been around the VdV line, this year he's above it, probably b/c Torts is smart enough to limit his minutes and shelter him. He's obviously here more for the attitude change than his skill as a hockey player, and I expect he'll get buried like Weise in the last two years of his contract.

Sedlak is another story, both the metric and eyeballs says 3 years in a first line role in the KHL have raised his game. He had good metrics in CBJ, but no offensive game, pp/60: 1.18, 0.79, 0.92. Now he actually looks like a decent bottom six forward.

Now this is an interesting quote:

“They’re telling us to make plays, find the middle of the ice, not just bang it around (the boards). I think the first 10 or so games were a little, ‘Oh, coach wants it out, coach wants it out, no turnovers,’” Cates said. “But (now) we’re making plays, we’re on the same page, we’re communicating and playing the right way, playing with the puck.”

Take a while to get rid of bad habits drilled in by previous coaching regimes (like the last decade).
Nor does this contradict what Torts has told Allison, he doesn't want cross ice passes, he wants to drive the puck up the ice, whether skating or passing.
Sort of Patton's approach, "Forward, always forward."

I am not going to post it because it’s behind a paywall, but I just want to put it out there - evolving hockey’s RAPM model, which is way more robust than NST, basically states that MacEwen is vastly out performing his expected goals. And he’s getting destroyed on their corsi model too.

In general, every flyers forward is getting rekt for the most part

Frost hasn't played with dregs? Like at all? Nobody at all on his lines that sinks them?

MacEwen and Tippett strike me as two players who will see their production flatline inevitably. They look busy but make a ton of stupid or failed plays, then get lucky on occasion.

I expect Tippett to remain more useful than MacEwen by a wide margin because he can at least make transition plays.

Sounds like a neck operation is in his future and LTIR for the rest of the season.

Per this model, Tippett is performing okay. but he’s a low event player. It helps he’s shooting at like 20% right now.

He's only been stapled to one, sometimes two of MacEwan, Bellows, or Deslauriers the last 7 games in a 4th line role... Why doesn't he look like a top 6 center? 🤡

Frost:

MacEwen 41 minutes xGF 39.60%
JVR 38 minutes xGF 36.80%
Laczynski 36 minutes xGF 45.54%

Desauriers 21 minutes xGF 51.76%
Allison 20 minutes xGF 68.60%
Laughton 18 minutes xGF 43.66%
Bellows 14 minutes xGF 19.90%

Yes thank you for proving he has spent the most time with a terrible player. We already knew this.

Probably seeing some specialist in Columbus who's worked with him before.
Didn't his family move to Philly after he was traded?

This made me look at Nic D on CapFriendly to see his NTC.... It's 20 teams for the first 2 years. Bad but not full NTC puke inducing.

Now what I really wanted to laugh at was the GM who signed him to his first contract...Hint He's in our ADVISOR GROUP!
Makes sense. If you look at the Flyers cronyism chart long enough you will see an infinity symbol.

And regardless of puke inducing, who give a NTC to a 4th line face puncher? I've never even heard of that. Add in the rest of the contract...what a joke.
