At the time I had mixed feelings. Going D felt like the philosophy behind the 2013-2016 class, where I felt like Nill and the gang were too eager to go for players that seemed to support the core rather than supplant them. But for me it was between Pickering and Bichsel (at the time I thought Chesley belonged in that group too; oof) if we went D, with Kulich, Ohgren, Snuggerud, and Lambert being the overall more interesting picks. I've been showing more respect to defenders who are always described as good defensively with "low offensive ceilings" because it's been used on everyone that eventually goes super saiyan lately: Miro, Sanderson, Miller, Schneider, Guhle, etc. I don't know why I'm rambling about this but might as well keep it going...
I try not to judge these picks in retrospect though. Yea Tufte is a bust, but that was a week draft (even if some hilariously talented players went right after between TNT, Kyrou, DeBrincat, Girard, Lindgren, and Fox). I do think the Nill era has struggled to with finding defenders with gamebreaking offense. I'm actually a fan of Harley, but I don't expect him to be a big time point producer. I know Kyrou's numbers are kind of insane, but I do worry about his skating (unlike forwards, defenseman can't get away with being plodders) translating, whereas if you wanted a PMD Lane Hutson was right there. That pick still annoys me.
