Would be some shrewd-ass GMing, but I don't see a path where Orlov returns. Why are the Caps changing their stance on term after the season?
I think it’s more that both sides have time for discovery to see how the market looks. Orlov and his agent will be able to see what teams want him and at what price. Maybe there’s an offer out there he can’t refuse, maybe not. Orlov has a family established here and after being away from them and playing for a new organization, if the Caps can come close to what another team is offering does the fact that his family likes it here have any impact?

I don’t know how likely it is but I don’t think the door is completely closed to him coming back. This isn’t the same as Alzner where the Caps wanted to move on… they wanted to keep Orlov but couldn’t risk losing him for nothing if he didn’t re-sign this summer.

I think that would require Orlov wanting to come back to find a middle ground.

We don't truly know what the Caps stance was to begin with. It's been reported that they weren’t ready to go above 4 years while Orlov wanted 7. I don't think there are going to be that many teams willing to give 7 years to Orlov. If you trim that down to 6 maybe the list is slightly bigger.

But is there an interesting offer on the table for him with a place and a team he wants to go to? Who knows. He really liked being here so him coming back to the table doesn't seem too unrealistic to me.

I don't really know how that would work for the Caps though. Limited cap space and even if they can get cap space by dumping Mantha and trading Kuznetsov, they really need forward help more thanD help. Plus the strategy seems to be to get younger, not older.

Someone suggested trading Fever with Kuzy for substantial young talent. That doesn't sound bad IF Orlov is signed.

He himself sounded like he'd consider Caps' offer but that was before playing for Boston in playoffs obviously. However, if Boston implodes after their run maybe he will recognize that as a once in many moons opportunity and will consider coming back on his terms (if Caps can accept those).

Id prefer to trade AA before Fever maybe, but Im no specialist obviously. I just know that Fever-Sandin-AA is not enough. Add Orlov and its completely another story.

If I were to choose who to overpay to from the list of Kuzy, Backstrom, Oshie, Mantha and Orlov, surely Orlov would be my go to guy. We know how last year(s) of an albatross contract could look - and Id sign Orlov anyway and try to trim all those gentlemen listed before him.

I think GMBM probably knows the market is even worse in terms of competition now, than back when they moved him after not agreeing to his term ask.

The only path back (other than the Caps suddenly meeting his ask) is Orlov eating his hat on some level, and I think he’s probably going to take the $ and run. His performance has just been too outstanding to not at least come close to maximizing his value.

I've been one of Orlov's biggest supporters for a very long time. He's been a stellar D in the league that was often overlooked thanks to Carlson's point totals and the Caps PP system not being able to make the most of Orlov's talents. I think he's showing off his abilities in Boston, and deserves to get paid every penny of his next contract.

But I don't think the Capitals should be the one to give him that contract. Orlov will be 32 in July, and we already know the hang-up on the contact discussions with Washington was term. The Capitals need far too much help up front to fit a huge contract on the back-end, especially one that's going to run into Orlov's twilight years. Sign players for what they will do, not for what they have already done.

Let Sandin shine as the offensive LD. Hope Fehervary takes a step forward. Sign someone like Justin Holl to be a stable PKing LD to round out the defense.

Yup this….and they could front load a longer Orlov deal as much as is legally possible to make it more buyout friendly in the last year or 2…

Would enjoy having Jack Hughes on the Caps. Are there any more Hughes left in the family we can draft?

Siegenthaler with the clear to assist on that Hughes goal. What a change in momentum! I wish they still had Jonas around instead of the not as good version they currently have!

At this point for me, it's Maple Leafs, Panthers, Devils, Islanders to advance in the East. In the West, Kraken, Kings, Wild, Jets.

Maybe a total of 2 of those teams will advance but I can't get myself to cheer for the Bolts, Bruins, Rangers or Canes. Also for some reason I want to see McDavid lose. Otherwise I don't care for any of the other West teams. Would be nice to see the Knights still have some misery to live through before they hoist the Cup.
