Probably best for him if he doesn't. No chance he's stays on the roster once most of these guys come back. At least in Arizona/Chicago he'll probably stays in the NHL lineup all season.
Another waste of a 1st rounder

Considering how thin the Avs roster is right now it's surprising that they'd waive Kaut, especially having just also lost Megna. Has he really been bad enough that he can't stay on this injury-ravaged team?

Kaut just doesn't have it. Too slow, always gets to board battles a half second late, not intense in the battle, and doesn't have enough skill to offset his physical short comings.

Just not a full time NHLer.

Pretty clear indicator of how Bednar felt about his compete level after his comments last night

Yeah. I thought he looked particularly bad in the Philly game. Didn't watch last night but based on Bednar's post game comments and then waiving him today its pretty clear they aren't happy with him.

He fights consistency issues like nobody else. He can be really good one game and awful the next. (That game in Finland where he had 1G 1A was the best game of his NHL career and one where he legitimately looked like a Top 9 NHL forward. But then you get games like the one in Philly chalk full of lazy plays, poor reads, and lacking effort where the guy doesn't even look cut out for the AHL.

That Columbus game legitimately changed my mind on him completely. I basically went from "He's straight up not NHL caliber" to "There's a decent NHL player here" but the problem is he doesn't bring that player nearly consistently enough. He isn't good enough to coast for large chunks of a season like some guys are. But he's absolutely good enough to be a regular player if he puts in the effort and consistency.

At this point its basically entirely up to him whether he makes it as an NHLer. He has to find that self motivation to bring a solid effort on a nightly basis. If he does that he'll carve out a role in the NHL, though I doubt it ends up being with us at this stage. But if he cant find that motivation for himself, he'll never be more then a fringe guy like he is now. Considering his age and the number of chances he's gotten, my money would be on him never figuring it out. Maybe a fresh change of scenery would help him, maybe it doesn't.

Girard +1st for Horvat + Schenn

Toews-Makar
Byram-Manson
Schenn-EJ

Although Schenn is right handed and I think only plays the right side.

Schenn also sucks.
I haven't really watched many Vancouver games, just hearing that Schenn has been solid enough to be a good 3rd pair guy on a contender, so I don't know. He's a plus player on a team that hasn't played very good, for what it's worth

Kaut's game against Columbus was something he couldn't sustain. He doesn't have the motor or conditioning to be that guy every night. Just like other AHL guys, there can be moments where they look like NHL players... but they really aren't when you zoom out. Kaut will probably get a NHL contract from somebody next year and bounce up and down... but in 2024, he's going to be back in Europe.

Bednar's comment though... this is a frustrated coach. He comments about injuries yesterday, then the calling out of the vets last night, then this Kaut lecture today... he's not a happy camper and it is totally understandable.

I would not say he was setup for success with only one real top 9 center in defense of the Cup.

This was going to be a year where they would struggle with consistency. I get the feeling he's having to rehash shit that he feels shouldn't be needed. They've been sloppy even when healthy at times.

I kinda figured the team would take their foot off the pedal and have a worse start than they had actually.

I think I didn't want to face it, but it seems inevitable Mack misses some time each year at this point. So this depth chart down the middle at least, was something we were going to see at some point regardless.

Kaut has had plenty of chances and with decent players (better than his NHL talent would dictate). He’s just not a NHL player.

Yeah MacK is injury prone and it will probably be what eventually causes his regression. They’ll add up at some point. And really shows the Avs need a good 2C to step in when it happens.

Yeah, when you talk about them going after a younger long term solution that's the only time I'm remotely ok with moving Byram.

Although we'll see if that's even an option.

Here’s the deal with Kaut:

He doesn’t want to put in the work and conditioning to transition his game to a bottom 6 role he could probably fill. Kaut wants to play pond hockey/top 6 scorer/PP time in the AHL and eventually Europe. Probably best both parties go their separate way. I do not think he gets claimed.
