Rumor: 2022-2023 Trade Rumors and Free Agency: The Search for a 2C

My biggest question in regards to Vegas, is their goaltending. No proven past, etc.

Though I suppose any non-homer would have the exact same concern about Colorado's.
Yeah Thompson and George are two sides of the same coin. You can win Cups with average goaltending, you just need goalies to no lose you games. Kuemper gave it a hell of a shot too.

My worry with Vegas is more in how they hold up to a grind. That is an older team with guys who have a lot miles and play a physical game... does that eventually catch up to them? If it does, can the younger NHLers (some of whom are very good) step up? Can the young AHLers fill in?

But like any team we can accommodate a normal spate of injuries. This period for us is freakish.

Also, Kadri missed a block of the playoffs with his hand mate.

Come playoffs, our lines and combinations will have time to have grown and build both chemistry and consistency.

We'll be a totally different machine (of which we've already seen glimpses this season) - beating up teams like Carolina..

It is on the high-end, but the Avs seemingly end up missing 8-10 guys for a period every year. This isn't abnormal for the Avs.

Yeah Kadri missed some time, but he played a major role in 3 series and winning those series.

I 100% believe the Avs will get most, if not all, of their guys back by January and go on some stupid 32-10-3 run to finish the season out. Even without a proper 2C (which I'd bet every dollar I have that they get one at the deadline) the Avs are stupid good when fully healthy.

They just need to weather the current storm as much as possible in an effort to limit the amount of ground they'll need to make up in '23.

+1

And some of our guys will have only played 1/2 a season. A fully healthy Landeskog, well rested for the playoffs, will be a double handful and then some. Darren Helm will put the fear of Yahweh into other teams. Even Nuke will be ready to chew up and spit out opposing defenses.

A @Sea Eagles wet dream.

But it closer to the start of the season, than the end, and we had key changes to key top 6 personell before we even began on top.

We've had 0 games with a healthy top 6. ZERO mate.

And don't forget who's missing. We are missing inspiration type players. Two way, gritty players. Players who add size and strength. So much experience.

I agree injuries aren't an excuse, but I'm a firm believer in giving line mates time to build something together. We've had no continuity.

But that'll happen. Whoever plays. And when it does, lookout..

The likelihood of ever having a fully healthy top 6 this season is pretty low. Even if you get all the players back, they can be beat up and playing through injuries. Pretty unrealistic to think otherwise.

Fair enough. I guess at this point , it's all kinda guesswork for both of us regarding injuries. Either way, it's an adventure we are on, and in my story book, I perceive a very happy ending for all of us.

Our coaching, culture, players, owners are too driven and focused to accept anything resembling mediocrity. We are winners from the owners, to the fans, and everything in between.

Is something around Girard for Dvorak+Harris a palatable trade..?

It addresses a need and brings in a similar type LHD defenseman and is essentially a cap wash with less term. Probably not the pickup the Avs would hope for a center as Dvorak is more of a third liner, but it still fills a hole and reduces overall cap term.

IMO if you making a move, you want a sure thing 2C. Not a guy who is slightly better than Compher.

I tend to agree with that, but I don’t know if we’ll get better value while addressing needs in a Girard trade.

Not to mention we already have our 2C in Mikko ;) this MacK injury is gonna turn out as a blessing in disguise and the Avs will be able to run the combo of MacK-Rantanen-Dvorak down the middle. Dvorak’s money is also up the same year as Rantanen’s which might cover the raise.

In the make belief world where the Avs are healthy they could conceivably run with lines of:

Landy-MacK-Nuke
Lehkonen-Rantanen-Newhook
JTC-Dvorak-LOC
Cogs-Helm-Kaut

Toews-Makar
Byram-Manson
Harris-EJ

Still a hilarious amount of transactional moves. No wonder Sleepy Joe didn’t want to be GM any more, this part seems exhausting
Such is the life as a cap ceiling team trying to bank anything they can. We will probably see this a lot for the next 2-4 weeks (outside the Christmas freeze of course).

I want Luke Schenn… I think he’d be a great bottom pair d on this team. I’m not sure what his price will be on a new contract but it shouldn’t be a lot I wouldn’t think. Easy enough to acquire, easy to fit in on the cap, solid player.

Do we know more on Byram's injury? With how it's trending do you guys see any possibility that Avs sign Toews an extension? That defense would be horrible without him while Byram being on the IR.

Uhhhhhh no. The Avs already have EJ and Manson, they don't need another guy who does the same things they do defensively and none of the things they do offensively.

He’s going for a 1st at the deadline I’d bet.

The only update we got today is that he’s not skating.

Manson is better yes but EJ and “offensively” do not belong in the same sentence. And Schenn is much better physically and defensively at this stage of their careers. As a depth player that can fit under this teams cap with ease, he’s a perfect fit.

Yeah, he could cost a fair bit and we don’t have much buying power left but he’d be a great player to have if they could find a way to make it work. 2c has to be the priority but if we could land him as a secondary trade I’d be very happy.
