It was a conditional pick with a reasonable chance (I could see the Avs adding a condition like that)… and it ended up a first. It was also 2nds and Barron if you want to exclude the whole conditional. Barron is equal to any prospect in the Avs pool and 2nds is just a step down from a 1st by most guidance out there by picks. Plus Avs don’t have 2nds to give up.

Trocheck also wasn’t a rental and was a dump on cost cutting.

Rentals can cost more than guys with a year or two left on their deals. Seems counterintuitive, but not having that commitment beyond a run has value.
Sure 2nds are a step down from 1sts by only briefly but at the time, they were 2nds. They became 1sts but it wasn't a certainty for Copp that they'd get the 1st.

Rentals might cost more, sure, but I'm going to say from now Toews does not return a 1st.

It was a conditional first... and ended up a first.

Toews will get a 1st.

Lol what are we splitting hairs over here? It was two conditional 2nds, one of which became a 1st because of the Rangers advancing to the ECF.

Toews will not get a 1st.
Idk… the result was a 1st + 2nd + Barron with some ancillary. Toews fits the mold of all the 1st + prospect rental deals we’ve seen over the years.

I honestly know nothing about the other Svech brother. Is he any good? Seems like a journeyman type who can't seem to stick anywhere.

Not really… has enough talent to think that he might be something, but just ends up sucking

Oh okay, never mind then. I'd think it'd be kinda worth it if he was just somewhat different than either Hunt or Blidh. Both those guys together on the same line are kind of a disaster.

How often to top 10-15ish picks get traded? That’s essentially what a first round pick is in this years draft. Only difference being the team holding it is in a playoff spot looking to improve. I do think Toews returns a 1st + weak prospect (or good prospect + weak pick) if traded with full retention.

The Avs pick won't be there and won't really be valued at that level. Teams will expect that if the Avs make the playoffs, they are going to make it to the 28th pick (conference finals). You might get some conditional padding around that to absorb some risk, but that will be the idea.

That said, each year there are one or two of those picks traded. Mostly in the summer moving around, but not terribly unusual to see it be a midseason sort of move. If you look at the fringe making the playoffs and eliminated in the first two rounds area... you see a lot of those picks moved.

Toews getting a first will depend a lot on how many teams this year are willing to give one up relative to how many players are available.

We’ll see if more or less 1st rounders are traded this deadline compared to last.

The Giroux trade says otherwise. He agreed to move to Florida and Florida only.

Still returned a 1st + a 3rd + an NHL ready prospect (Tippett).

Toews still has a stellar rep in the league, being the captain of a three-time Cup champion and the first pick of the Blackhaws that would eventually end the longest Cup drought of any team at the time. If that alone doesn't snag Chicago a 1st, I'll be stunned.

I personally don't care for the person or the player at all, but how he's perceived around the league is an entirely different story.

That doesn’t really refute my point.

1sts are not the same. We have no idea how GMs view the upcoming draft. No idea how many are willing to give up their first. Also depends on how many are on the market. Giroux was the top forward available, without tons of other options.

We’ll have to see what this years options are.

We should also ask ourselves: Did the Kings age out, or did they miss the playoffs the year after winning the Cup for different reasons?

Also, Mike Richards.

Good draft or not, picks still move. I think 3 have been moved already. 03 had 12 move hands. 15 had 10.

Not disagreeing. We’ll see the quantity. Only so many can move. All depends on the supply. Still yet to see how many players will truly be available.

Yeah only 32 can move... we just hear that song and dance most years where teams don't want to move 1st round picks and each year we see about a handful move. The impact rentals (top 6F/top3D) will be in the 1st + prospect range. Your elite rental guys like Horvat will be more. The 3rd line/#4D will be in the 2nd to 2 2nds range... unless the bidding really gets going (or they are physical RD who are former 2/3s) where they may get a first. 3Cs tend to get 1sts when the market is tight. 4th line guys and 5/6D will filter around between 3rd-5th round picks. Every year players filter in to those groups. You might see some ancillary changes around the prices, but the basis is always the same.

Please, no.

I haven't really been following the conservation too closely, but Devon Toews absolutely nets us a 1st++ if we trade him to a contending team at the deadline, don't know why we're arguing whether Toews nets a first rounder
