In one of the other threads, there was general agreement on Newhook+1st+mid pick for Horvat. I think that's generally around the value we see him returning (even if not from the Avs).
I haven't looked at any of the threads. I think Newhook is a clear step low and I really don't think the Canucks would build the deal around a forward. Horvat from the Avs would likely take Byram... which is why I don't think there is a fit between the teams. Structuring that sort of deal is pretty difficult.

If Horvat gets moved, I'm betting it will be to Minny.

Watch Vancouver completely f*** that up and ask for Dumba.

What helps the Tampas and Bostons of the world is that their players also take more team friendly contracts. Kucherov makes 9.5, guy should be making at least 12. Stamkos at 8.5 he should be at least 9.5. Hedman at 7.875 should be at least 10.

Then you have Boston. F***ing Marchand is a top-10 player in the league making 6.125. Bergeron for years was underpaid making 6.875 and this year only makes 2.5. Pastrnak making 6.67.

When your best players are making way less than they "should" be making, you can stack the rest of your team if you do things properly. Yes drafting plays a huge role in team success and these two teams are two of the better drafting teams (Boston 2015 snafu aside), but the cap work is masterful as well.

The Avs were able to win last year because we had MacKinnon making half of what he's worth, Kadri making probably 2/3 of what he's worth, Byram on an ELC, Nichushkin making a fraction of what he's worth and Kuemper retained from Arizona. That shit adds up. Now? Not so much.
Exactly this. Once you start paying full value for players, you better have very good drafting. This time next year, the value deals on the Avs are likely limited to Rants and Makar who are a couple to few million short. That's simply not enough.

We are seeing the crunch with Tampa already too. This year, Point is near his value. Next year Cirelli, Serg, and Cernak are at their value. Once you start doing that, it becomes very hard to stay elite and build the right team.

Reactions: Colorado Avalanche
He's playing like a dude who wants 1C money on max term.
So did Kadri but he didn't get the $9M per just about everyone thought he would.

Whatever team ends up getting Horvat better be re-upping him or have that part resolved before giving up a ton of assets. I could easily see a situation where he signs as a UFA in Vancouver in July otherwise.

I think the absolute max the AVS could go on that guy would be $7m per.

I've been behind on all the speculation and just read LeBrun's column yesterday. Nice to see things already getting started and him specifically mentioning Horvat and O'Reilly in connection with the Avs. I'm just ignoring the Toews part of it.

I still think Newhook will be good but his season is going worse than even his biggest detractors probably would've imagined with no signs of getting any better either. The TDL still seems like a reasonable bet for various reasons, including the cap, but maybe they'll try for sooner.

I agree. Despite the mud being slung his way this year, I don't think Newhook will ultimately end up being Jost 2.0. However we are neck-deep in this core's contention window and every single year is precious. You can't be f***ing around and praying that a 21 year-old kid is suddenly going the take the reigns as 2C and help this team return to the promised land. He's clearly just not ready. If you can package him for a guy that you know will help you win another Cup you just do it, despite whatever beliefs the FO holds that he's a legit roster player.

I found this pretty interesting. Makar, Mackinnon, and Rantanen are all currently tied for 3rd highest Avalanche PPG right now

That would likely be an off-season trade given that Norris is out for the year.

Wouldn't think they'd look to move Norris already, but who knows. Have Tkachuk and Stutzle been playing center this year? They look like they're off to good starts. If they have good years at center, maybe they reconsider moving Norris in the offseason?

Avs showed everyone the blueprint is to not settle for a great forward group, you have to bring in good young D men if you want to take the next step.

I know people say he's not the best but Dylan stromes availability on a fantasy league with 13 points, seems like he's doing alright. I don't know if he's 2c in Washington or not but I still think he might've been a good pickup.

Stutzle has been playing C I believe.
