I am praying it was already done but they are waiting to announce it.

4M to air seems silly
The roster has a 2C hole, but there aren't exactly great options to fill that at this point. Adding someone for the sack of adding someone to take that additional cap space also isn't constructive. It would be better to hold onto that cap space and have it build for a potentially big deadline or later season acquisition.

Hubi certainly earned that contract... he's an amazing player today. Also makes more sense why Florida moved on. The first chatter was probably around 11-12m and knew it would take 10+... for a guy his age and with Florida already having a real stinker of a contract on the books, they needed to get a guy that wouldn't be a stinker in year 5.

Same reason he tried to shut down that Dubois talk so quickly because of the cost.

He’s sneaky but we’re onto him.
Seriously I'd love it if the Avs traded for Dubois. I also think he'd re-up here.

Avs can’t afford Dubois and his extension. The cap is going to be extremely tight next season and there is no space to add anything except cheap deals.
You make room for him. I'd assume that Girard would be part of the deal anyway, so that alone covers most of it.

There will barely be any cap space even after Girard is traded. You wanna add big contracts, then other players need to go.
There's room this year and the subsequent years for a 7M PLD if we trade 5M Girard + Newhook which is the kind of package they'd be looking for for an extended PLD.

I believe since PLD just signed a 1 year deal a few weeks ago, the earliest the Avs could re-up him is January 1st, 2023.

I don't think that's the player you go out and get, personally. There's no guarantee he won't want $8M per and you wouldn't find out until after the trade is made which leaves you with an RFA you can't afford that apparently only wants to play in Montreal. Then at that point, you don't have Girard and/or Newhook.

I wouldn't be too surprised if the Avs used those assets to get a #2C but I believe it would be with the prospect that they are acquiring and signing the player long-term right away.

Still think Horvat is best option since he would probably cost less than 7M long-term.

He never said that or anything close to that. He was asked if he'd like to play in Montreal and he said yes. Was he going to say no?

PLD was in Columbus when everyone around him wanted to leave then ended up traded to Winnipeg also when everyone wants to leave (remember the Scheifele presser at the end of the season? Also Wheeler).

It's hard to blame him to not want to commit long term to either of those teams, especially considering that they are probably the two less attractive destinations in the NHL.

What he did looks bad but when you're looking at the context it's understandable. You're asked to commit long term to a team like Winnipeg or Columbus at the same moment that key pieces are asking to leave.

13M would make MacK the highest earning hockey player by AAV, so I think that would be the "high number". Hopefully less though. Even Oilers are struggling with McDavid and Draisaitl because you also need a team around them. And that's during their peak years. There is definitely such a thing as paying too much for one player. Anyway obviously we have no choice but to sign MacK, having all the core locked down except no centers would be a disaster.

I don't have a problem with him not wanting to commit to playing in Winnipeg long-term (or Columbus for that matter) I just don't like that the info got out.

If you want out - tell your agent to speak to the GM and keep that shit out of the media. Then, sign your QO just like you did and play out that 1 year RFA deal and if the dumbass GM is still too much of an idiot to get a deal done, then you just Tavares-Gaudreau yourself out of town and the GM is going to look like an idiot.

Edit - I think he's a pretty good player and would fit the #2C very well. Given the circumstances, I'm not sure Cheveldayoff would be able to do a lot better than a guy like Girard signed for the next 5 years. For me, the problem is that I think Dubois is going to want something like $8M per year but hey, if he's reasonable and takes anything under $7M, I think the Avs should be all over it.

PLD is an entitled primadonna, you're giving him too much credit within the situations. He's gotten everything he has asked for and it is never enough. Hell of a talent, pain in the ass off the ice.

The Oilers didn't fail to build a proper team around 97 and 29 because both those guys make too much money, they failed because they had the most incompetent GM in hockey throw money at a whole slew of aging grinders and he never figured out the goaltending. It should be relatively easy to build around players like that. Chiarelli (and later Holland) have galaxy-brained it since day one. Yes, the cap situation isn't ideal, but that doesn't mean it can't be done.

Yeah, I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt even after intentionally loafing it in order to force a trade out of Lumbus, but I don't want anything to do with that guy. Certainly not for top coin. Let him be a headache somewhere else.

I'd rather get Horvat over PLD. Should be cheaper to both trade for and sign.

The thing is if we're solving our 2C spot with a good player like a PLD/Horvat/etc... We're gonna have to lose another core player on top of Girard next summer. We don't have the cap space to do it otherwise.

Trading a young player to Winnipeg of all places after they committed long-term on a team friendly deal and has 5 years left on his deal would be pretty distasteful and would really suck for Sam.

If the Avs did swing that trade there's also a risk that they get in a tough spot next offseason when Dubois wants $8m. But I suppose it wouldn't be the worst position as it solves 2C for at least this year and then worst case you simply trade him and get a couple of pieces back like Calgary got for Tkachuk. A young top 6 C will always be in demand after all.

Huby's contract screws us because 10.5M was the cap hit we were hoping for with Mack.

Mack now has to ask for at least 1M more. He's a center, he's better, he's 2 years younger, he's a real playoff performer (unlike Huby) and he's a cup champ.

Time will tell but this is unlikely. And IF that's how MacKinnon's thinking, Matthews is the comp more than Huberdeau.

Yeah... somewhere in the 11s has always kinda been the floor IMO. With 12s being the most likely. For MacK, even at 12.5m... it is a discount.
Earlier in the offseason I said high 9s or low 10s... But that was mostly wishful thinking

If I were a betting man I'd say 11.5x8, or in that ballpark.

Nope. Matthews signed out of his ELC. His contract was all RFA years except one season.

Irrelevant. That's not a reason for him not to be a comp instead of Huberdeau.

Also, let's consider some more chronology here.

After the season, JS was asked about this topic. He said that they have a good idea of what the number is and they're confident it would happen. He didn't say, "lets see what other guys get this summer and see what Nate's ask is." It's not impossible that Nate is clicking HF every five minutes to see whether his ask should go up. But consider some data points:

* Nates quote about the discount
* JS's quote after the season (as previously mentioned)
* Nate's fandom for Sidney Crosby (8.7)
* Other great players on the team are making less than 10
* A desire to win more cups and an awareness that no team has ever won the cup with a player makine >10

It's not realistic for that stat about winning the SC with a player making 10 to last much longer, but nevertheless. It highlights the need for other players to be fed also.

I really question whether Huberdeaus's moving the needle at all in all of this. I could be wrong, of course.
