Buyout proof

Fun fact: Crosby, a generational player in incredible physical shape, was 34 last season and nowhere near a 10.5M player.

Just imagine Huberdeau at 34-35-36-37.

I don't know why people point to Crosby's contract as if it means anything today

edit: I might have missed your point, which is bad regardless

I've been figuring MacKinnon probably falls in the 11 million per season range. This would back that up. The only logical reason I can see for him taking less is that if he realizes one of the reasons the Avs won the Cup is they had some guys, himself included, who were on very sweet deals for the numbers they were putting up (Kadri, Nuke [before the extension]). That said, he and his agent know he's been a bargain and if the signs an 8 year it is likely the last significant one of his career. He's gonna get super paid.

Considering you pay these guys for their performance in the first few years of their contract not the last few, if Huberdeau is pacing for 100 points at 34 like Crosby, that's a pretty good deal.

It’s really surprising the Avs have been able to stick to their no big signing bonus stance for so long. Let’s see if it lasts as I’m sure Nate and Brisson will test that.
Nichushkin already broke their reluctance for signing bonuses.

When Huberdeau is 34-35-36-37, what will the cap limits be?
When Huberdeau is 34-35-36-37, how many players will have 10+ mil contracts?

Nichushkin got $5m in total signing bonuses, which is 5 times more than Landeskog and Makar who got $1m exch which itself was more than the zero SB's Avs have tended to give out.

Still, not remotely close to Tkachuk and Huberdeau, and i'd bet that is what MacK is/will be looking for.

How about signing Johan Larsson and making the 2nd line a pure shutdown line (until the TDL when a proper 2C can be acquired)?

Landeskog - MacKinnon - Rantanen
Lehkonen ------ Larsson --- Nichushkin
Newhook ------- Meyers ---- Compher
Cogliano ---------- Helm ----- O'Connor

Another option would be to try Newhook/Meyers/Compher/Rantanen at 2C and have Larsson as a bottom 6 matchup center.

This makes sense. Bednar likes experimenting with lines anyway. Plus there might be injuries. A low key, low commitment add like this wouldn’t preclude Newhook or Rantanen from playing 2C at times.

Not really bothered about that Huberdeau contract. Will it look bad in the back half? Maybe, but the cap is also going up dramatically at that point. And if someone here still thought that MacKinnon giving the team a discount would mean less than 11,5mil... The discount is getting him for less than 13.

He'll take $10.5m after Sakic sweet-talks him with his "you're worth every penny" speech.

Today would be a nice day to sign MacKinnon. Not going to happen, but it would be nice to you know get your franchise player locked up.

The Huberdeau contract will probably age like crap, unless he's playing like Pavelski/St. Louis at age 38.

But it's not like it's some insane deal; i.e. Jeff Skinner 2.0. He got his market value. Contracts aging like milk is the cap era game teams have to play.

I don't expect coming any time soon at this point. It would've been done already. Still confident he has an extension at place when the season starts, but I doubt they are grinding away too much at this moment. Barkov signed his extension 8th of last October, just 4 days before the season started.

Would be cool though if he would sign his contract during his day with the SC, which has to be soon right?

I am praying it was already done but they are waiting to announce it.

I don't really expect to see much Avs news at this point. Feels like this is pretty much the roster we will be working with the start the season.
4M to air seems silly

I don’t like the Huberdeau contract but understand why management wanted to go that route. It doesn’t help that I’ve never liked Huberdeau as much as others though and thought for awhile his numbers are inflated. General consensus seems to be that the contract won’t look good in years 4-8 but I think it will start to look bad by year 2 at the latest, don’t think he’s worth that money.

I would have rather traded Huberdeau for the equivalent of two 1st round picks at the deadline and gotten another for Weeger, both of which I think are very reasonable asks (they could probably get even more) and kickstart a rebuild. Four 1st round picks + for Tkachuk would have been fantastic value.

I don’t think this Flames team is going to be good enough to make serious noise and who knows what Lindholm is thinking. Again though I understand why management didn’t want to blow it up even though they probably should have.
