Say we don't sign anyone else and we bank cap space until the deadline, can we use that "banked cap space" on a 2C and still have enough to pay bonuses at the end of the year?

It's impossible to know how their cap will be affected by injury callups, but I expect this to be the Avs approach.

Barring a trade falls in their lap, they'll juggle the cap all year with Mikko/JTC at 2C, going with 20 and maybe even 19 man rosters, making paper transaction to send guys down on off days, and then trade for a 2C at the deadline.

If they can get retention on that 2C and they didn't have too many injury callups, then they might be able to pull it off with minimal to no bonus overages the following year.

With a 21 man roster with Meyers and one of Sedlak/Blidh up with the Avs and Englund with the Eagles, they should have about $3.9M in cap space to start. So if they start $3.9M under the cap, and don't have too many injuries, they might be able to bank more cap space pretty quickly.

To follow up on this, the Avs could start the season with $3.9M in cap space, and be able to bank cap space quickly if they don't have too many injuries.

The potential bonuses for Byram and Newhook combined is $3.35M.

Here is the criteria for players drafted before 2022.

Defensemen

"A" Level Bonuses

Newhook has $850k in bonuses which is probably most if not all schedule A, because the max is $850k, and they get counted before schedule B. He might only hit one or two of his bonuses, and there's a chance he doesn't hit any.

Byram has $2.5M in total bonuses which are mostly schedule B. If he stays healthy, pretty good chance he hits the full $850k in A bonuses, but there's a chance he doesn't hit any of his B bonuses. He only needs to hit one of his B though.

Depends if Bo gets in the top 10 for defenseman goals/assists/points or makes the 1st or 2nd All Star team at the end of the season.

Feels like it would be hard for both to hit the maximum $3.35M in bonuses. It's also possible that Newhook doesn't hit any of his schedule A bonuses and Byram only hits his schedule A, which would mean the Avs would only owe $850k in bonuses and probably be just fine. If Bo hits any of his schedule B though they'll end up owing the full $2.5M for him.

I’m curious how Hubs ages. He’s very easily worth that contract currently, but it likely ages like milk. Just curious to see how quickly that happens.

That's a terrible deal. But Calgary kinda had to do it to justify the trade. If Weager walks this summer, this trade is still a win for FLA.

Tkachuk got 8 years at 9.5 million, better player, and 5 years younger (contract expires when he's 32).
Huberdeau contract takes him to 37, for 1 mill more/year .. woof

But I thought Calgary wasn’t gonna be able to re-sign him?!

Terrible trade for Florida.

Nah. You’re missing the biggest point. Calgary had a guy who didn’t want to be there. Florida gave up way too much for that.

Nah, we have no idea what other competing offers were out there for Tkachuk.

Don’t really agree. Calgary got the better player hands down. Now obviously they don’t get him through his prime years like Florida which is a bit problematic, but there’s a pretty solid gulf between Hubs and what we’ve seen of Tkachuk so far.

I agree to disagree. Tkachuk is much harder to play against with similar offensive output. Tkachuk's plays style/fiestyness is much better suited for the playoffs than Huberdeau, and Florida's window is now.

Huberdeau will be the 8th highest paid player in the league next year, as it stands right now.

Yup. Calgary got the better player and locked him up.

Terrible trade for Florida.

Yeah not a great trade for sure. Tkachuk should and will be a very good fit in Florida, but CGY got an absolute truckload for a guy who wasn’t coming back.

Trevling with the “I probably won’t be around for the last few years of it anyway” type contract

Gotta do it now to save some face
Meh I get it. It’s the same as signing Landy, Nuke, and eventually Mack long term. Doesn’t really matter about the backend of the contracts because the window will be closed than regardless.
