This is what the roster would look like after a Lundell/Byram swap. There's $4.5m capspace free to use on one roster spot (ie. 3LHD)

The top 6F and top 4D would be locked in for two cup runs.

In 2023 the $4.5m capspace plus $1m from the cap going up would easily cover raises to Newhook and Meyers (EJ covers MacKinnon), without even counting JTC's $3.5m rolling off. Beyond 2024 there would probably also be flexibility to extend Toews and bridge Lundell without losing a core piece.

Landeskog - MacKinnon - Nichushkin
Lehkonen ------ Lundell ----- Rantanen
Newhook ------ Meyers ------ Compher
Cogliano --------- Helm ------- O'Connor
MacDermid

Toews - Makar
Girard - Manson
xxxxx -- EJ

For the record, trading Byram is far from my ideal move, but a trade for Lundell would clearly fit the Avs cap structure really well going forwards and would be worth thinking hard about.

It's one hole or the other. I'd move Toews before I'd even consider moving Byram. And I'd move Girard before I would even consider moving Toews or Byram.

I sincerely doubt Sakic and cMac would consider trading Byram for Lundell.
It’s not necessarily one hole for the other. It’s trading from a position of strength. Even if we move a dman we have our top 4 filled out quite easily.

Very few players in this league who are young/young-ish centres. Trevor Zegras, Sebastian Aho, Jack Hughes, Tim Stutzle, Elias Pettersson. That's it when it comes to centres.
So not for any of Barzal, Lundell, Byfield, or Suzuki?

Or how about Draisaitl?

Except Zegras played wing a good portion of last season. I'm not convinced he's a C, personally.

Not for Barzal, Lundell, or Suzuki no. Definitely not a chance I'd move Bo for Byfield.

Draisaitl obviously but Bo doesn't come close to being enough for a top-5 player in the world.

I thought about that but I do think in the end he'll play centre.

Lundell for Byram makes a lot of sense when one considers the weaknesses and strengths of each team.

Florida are deep at forward and center, but have a gaping hole at 1LHD.

Colorado are deep at LHD but have a gaping hole at 2C.

Discuss...

No way. I’d do Girard for lundell though

This board is effed up. It went from trade G/Johnson, to Toews, and now to Byram. Clearly most have forgotten how shitty the Avs D were for the longest time. We need a 2C not a 1C. You win by starting with the back end
If this Kadri thing takes a few more days we'll be offering up Makar

You’d move Byram for Stutzle but not Lundell? Huh

Is that a hot take? I’d also prefer Stutzle to Lundell.

I don’t think you can trade Byram tho. Atleast not for what the realistic offers would be. What he did taking over for Girard in the playoffs at his age/experience was just ridiculous.

I'm probably one of the bigger Stutzle fans, but he has to play center first and that isn't a guarantee....

I thought he got moved there down the stretch when he was going off? Atleast the games I saw I could have swore he was playing C.

Stutzle just has a way higher ceiling than Lundell IMO.

Was he not playing centre last season? His two most common linemates were Forementon and Brown, who both are wingers. After that was Tkachuk who is also a winger.

Yeah no chance he played wing all season. I thought he started the year there but than was eventually moved to C.

He's played all over the lineup. Some at center, some at left wing, some at right wing... some on the third line... some on the first line. He just hasn't played center consistently. He spent a lot of the year on Paul and Gambrell's wing... even spent time with Norris too. I believe he can, but he has yet to fully prove it in the NHL. He'll get a shot next year to do it.

And yeah Stutzle has a higher ceiling than Lundell... he's got a MacK level ceiling, which is why Ottawa would laugh if the deal was Byram straight up. Byram is a great young defensemen and I think he a long-term top pairing guy. I think there are legit questions of him being a #1. People valuing him like a top 5D and expecting only the very elite of young centers are kidding themselves that Byram would bring that back in a trade.

Yeah I'd trade Byram for Lundell if Florida would. Not a chance they do that though. Lundell is a superstar in the making and the perfect 2C behind Barkov long term.

They'll move Bennett in 2 years time when Lundell is an RFA to make room for him in the Top 6.

He'll be a centre. His linemates point to him being a centre for sure, he spent hardly any time with a guy like Norris at 5v5. I think he's got superstar written all over him.

Wow the market for free agents is quite bad. Flat cap era sucks. Klingberg is really betting on himself to sustain another good year. Just last year Dougie Hamilton was able to get that huge contract. You have to feel a little bad for some of these guys who thought they'd get a big payday.
