I swear to god this Conner Bleackley kid is gonna blossom soon here. He's not better defensively than ROR but I do think his defensive upside is underrated. Offensively, he has a lot of tools to excel as a 2C in the NHL. Avs pipeline seems thin but he's a real standout to me.

Lundell for Byram makes a lot of sense when one considers the weaknesses and strengths of each team.

Florida are deep at forward and center, but have a gaping hole at 1LHD.

Colorado are deep at LHD but have a gaping hole at 2C.

Discuss...

Lundell has more promise than Newhook but it's a similar problem. If he blossoms, it's one more hungry mouth to feed. If you lose Byram, you're simply replacing Byram's future salary with Lundell's and you're in the same position with Toews (where you may not be able to keep him).

Also, after seeing the SC final, I'm not sure I trade Byram.

You're gonna need to pay a 2C whether it's Lundell or Kadri or someone else.

Lundell also has an extra year of ELC compared to Byram which is huge value. It would suddenly be easy to give raises to MacKinnon, Newhook, and Meyers in 2023. The new crunch would be in 2024 with Toews' and Lundell up, but the cap should rise before then, and in the meantime you have two years of a 2C and 1LHD earning a combined $5m.

It would obviously be ridiculously hard to part with Byram, but logically it's a move that makes sense for a player like Lundell.

I don’t trade anybody for Byram, certainly not Lundell, not yet anyway. Byram already proved his value as a leader for a SC champ while Lundell choked with Florida, what has he achieved yet ?

Nope. Byram is off the table unless a young, surefire 1C is coming the other way.

I would keep the defence as is for this season, trading Girard at this point would be trading from a point of weakness, his value will increase later and he’s become very underrated around here.

The Avs this coming season will have what is quite possibly the greatest defence when it comes to transition hockey in NHL history, with few teams really challenging them. They used this defence to post the best post season possession metrics since the late 2000’s Red Wings (also one of the best transition d cores ever), and had one of the most dominant playoff runs of all time (I thought they were only clearly outplayed 2 times in the entire playoffs which is crazy).

Having an “extra” transition focused dman means that they can sustain one injury in the playoffs and still have the best defence, that’s this teams entire identity and it needs to be kept as long as it can be.

The defence provide so much offence that an offensive weak 2C that is more focused on defence (Pageau etc) is all that’s really needed for a repeat.

Lundell is that though....
In the mold of Ryan O’Reilly, sure. And just like ROR, he had just one goal and no assists in his first playoff appearance.

I’d move Toews before Byram. And I don’t want to move either. Lundell would be a nice. I think our current top 3D might just be more meaningful to another championship run. I think some of the career numbers we had in our forward group this year is because of the quality of our D. We don’t need such a high end 2C with the D group we have now.
