2022-2023 Around The League

Lots of good GMs in all sports never had success playing, heck some didn't even make it past playing as 10 year olds. Our next GM played club hockey in college, that's probably more than enough to succeed as he has. I think the days of just hiring good ole boys who went down certain paths for organization roles is ending and teams will be better for it.

Or maybe she’s just capable of being a hockey executive :dunno:

If it’s always a coincidence then how are women ever going to break into the industry.
I'm not saying she won't be good I'm saying they felt the pressure to hire a woman in a management role after the Habs and the Canucks did in the last months.

If they would have done it earlier I'd have been 100% fine with it.

Leafs felt the pressure to hire a woman in a management role after Vancouver and Montreal did it. Not saying it's a bad hire but we all know why she got hired.

Hire women because they are the best person to apply for the job. Don't hire women because they are women.
You mean Dr. Wickenheiser, MD?

So you think the other two just got promoted so it didn’t look like a PR stunt? IIRC this is the time the Leafs have always done their front office reshuffling.

Man JBB is ruthless
Yup, it gets brought up around here quite often if Joe trades x because they signed a long-term contract a few years ago it’s going to affect future signings, he’ll get a bad rep, etc. when other GMs do ruthless moves like this and they have no issues attracting FAs or signing players long-term/at discounts.

It’s business. GMs do what’s best for the team.

They most likely were too but I highly doubt they were feeling any pressure to do it like the Leafs did.

That said, it doesn't mean that women can't do the job people. Relax. I'm only questioning the motivation, not how good those hirings can be at their job.

If it opens the door in the future to hire the best person for the job regardless of gender then ultimately it's a good thing.

Ah, I see how you interpreted like that. I meant the other two other AGMs that got promoted at the same time in the Leafs FO.

The timing is obviously not coincidental for all three teams to move in this direction but Wickenheiser is a Canadian hockey legend in her own right and has been around the game her whole life. I don’t see any reason she can’t be equally or more effective than a lot of these guys that keep getting recycled around the league

Without commenting the first paragraph cause I have no idea whether she was a good hire or not, bolded part is so true in everything. Always hire the best person, no matter what he/she/it/helicopter/whatever has or doesn't have between the legs.

It's just common sense but apparently it's a controversial opinion.

Sorry, but if there is a helicopter applying for any job I'm doing the hiring for... the helicopter gets the job.

Eventually we have to get past the they hired the minority/woman/etc for PR thing. If that’s said every time a hire is made than the progress isn’t really being made.

Which teams off-season besides the Avs are you all most interested in? I am curious what Verbeek and the Ducks will do, not a whole lot of noise over there but he seems to be off to a good start

Obviously because I live here but Edmonton's.

They are IMO our biggest threat to more SCF appearances because of 97/29, but the rest of their team is not built well. They have 2 key RFAs and 2 key UFAs they'd like to re-sign on top of figuring out where to trade Puljujarvi and where to find a starting goalie.

All that with limited cap space. It will be interesting to watch unfold. If the summer goes poorly they may well be handing the division to LA/Vegas next season.

LA will be a big threat next season. Edmonton barely got by them and they are stuck in a bind right now.
