2022-2023 Around the League Part Deux

Some really good reporting here. Apparently it was the players' idea to wear the jerseys and the organization was given zero heads-up from Provorov about refusing to take warm-ups. Torts and Fletcher let him play anyway.

Proud of the players for coming up with it themselves. It means a lot more than companies doing it, because companies have the financial incentive. There was one player standing for hate, but all the other ones standing for love.

He absolutely is by doing this. He spat in the face of an initiative driven by two of his teammates to create a safe space for LBGTQ+ folks to watch and enjoy hockey. It's an act of hate, not any sort of peaceful protest or expression of religious views.
Who knew that in 2023 in western society that not putting on a piece of clothing that's supportive of a group of people would be considered 'an act of hate'? :shakehead Is there so little actual anti-LGBT sentiment in our nations that we now have to go and invent new things to get angry over?

Also lets be real. 99.9% of the LGBT community wouldn't even know who Ivan Provorov is or what sport he plays for and for which city and team. This is a nothing story that some in the media felt the need to push and get offended over for the LGBT community when in all likelihood the vast majority don't even care about it.

Whoooooooo so much ignorance in one post, especially that crack about "99.9% of the LGBT community" not being into sports.

Nice to meet you, poster I've never seen prior to this. Feel free to look around and have your say, no matter how unintelligent and uninformed that say may be.

I think the big issue here is more on what the Flyers did, not Provorov. What was the whole point of this event if you allow your own players to take a stance against it?

If not wearing a piece of clothing is the stardard for how we judge people of whether or not they hate someone or something, then something is seriously wrong with our society and we need to put the brakes on this insanity before it gets even worse.

Who knew that in this day and age you had to completely prostrate yourself in complete submission a group of people and their beliefs in order to show that you aren't against them? Damn what a world we live in these days. :shakehead

Where did I say that 99.9% of the LGBT community isn't into sports? I said that the overwhelming majority of LGBT people don't even know who Provorov is and probably don't even care what this random person did and that the only reason its even a story is because the media needs to find a controversial story to push and this happened to be the one for the moment because it involves LGBT in some way.

One more thing. This acts as a good reminder for the organizations, that despite what we as a society think in general, there are 800ish players in this league. From many different countries, and backgrounds. Maybe find out what the players on your roster think about this stuff, before going forward with it.

Good luck with the Flyers trying to trade Provorov now. Not saying that no-one would want him now, but that HAS to affect his value somehow. And not in a good way.

That goes both ways--Provorov reportedly dropped this on the Flyers last minute. If he was so offended by the event, maybe he should have spoken out about it behind closed doors beforehand. But instead he pulled this cowardly little stunt and made it all about him and his supposed beliefs.

I’m fine with what the Flyers did… they didn’t let one player stop their actions as a whole. They also didn’t hide that player’s reasoning. They could have very easily scratched him with a last minute tweak and hid this whole thing. Instead they let it show that some players take a stand and the organization will with or without Provorov in tow.

I’d much rather the Flyers cast the spotlight on this than shy away from it.

Yes but also no. I think my point here was that there needs to be more onus on the club to find this stuff out. Like I said, they probably just assumed everyone was going to be fine with it. I don't think Provorov changed his mind in the last minute, although he probably should've come forward to the club earlier about his issue with this thing.

And this goes beyond this particular event. What if the next time some player pulls a similar stunt on a military appreciation night? Yesterday and today Provorov hurt feelings, in that case you might be hurting the owner's pockets if military reduces their sponsorship.

Oh it's totally fair and I guarantee you the uproar would be fierce beyond belief if that happened.

I've always said it should not be "Military Appreciation Night," it should be "Veteran Appreciation Night." I have no time for military propaganda, which is what that is.

That said, if I were a player I'd probably still wear the jersey. I might make a statement afterwards about how I'm not comfortable with it for reasons, but I'd still wear it.

You made a sweeping assumption about an entire community, dude. From there you assumed they don't care. What is that old saying about never assume because it makes an ass out of you and me? Well, you demonstrated it. Congrats.

I'd f***ing love it if someone didn't partake in Military Appreciation Night. Regardless of what team/nationality. The threads would be hilarious.

Yes the coyote uniforms and arena are the class of the league mhmm good good nothing to see here.

I disagree with both sides and would likely piss everyone off in this thread if I stated my opinion on what happened so I'll keep it for myself.

One thing though: The Flyers really handled this thing poorly. They shouldn't have dressed him for the game and call it "illness" or something. No one would have suspected anything and no big deal in the end.

I disagree with this completely. Flyers did the right thing letting attention be called to it. Let the sunshine in!

Yea so everyone can focus one that one guy who didn't wear the jersey and forget completely about the 20+ others who did.

Bad take.

No one is forgetting about them. There have been articles today talking about them and bringing to light the work JVR and Laughton are doing.

Letting a player get in the way of an initiative and shirk responsibility is far worse. I'd say yours is a bad take.

Provorov is saying one thing (he wants people to live their lives how they chose), doing another (sitting out because of his "church" that has ties to the Kremlin). Russia is probably the last place you want to be openly anything LGBTQ.

Honestly I don't really care if you don't support it, that's fine. But you wear a jersey for 15 minutes and be a team player. I hope he ends up back in the Soviet Union and gets stuck there. Freedom of expression is great, by all means there are plenty of crazy evangelicals that do worst. But Russians are walking a fine line right now in the world. With the spotlight on them, it'd be smart to stand up for human rights instead of ostracizing a community because of your "church".

That's what he absolutely should have done. Should be noted that Provorov is one of the least Russian, Russians in the US. He's lived most of his years formative years in the US. He obviously comes from Russian heritage and a Russian family, but he's lived in the US and Canada as long as he has lived in Russia.
