Nice assist last night.. disappointed he's back on L4 though.
If they don't think Slaf meshes well with Dvo and Gally, they could leave Daddy there, and switch Slaf and Armia, have both play their natural sides, and have the more productive guy by far be on the third line.

Armia could get a point a game for the next five games and STILL not reach the 1.80 p/60 that Slaf has now. That's crazy.

Here are the points per 60 minutes played for the Habs forwards this year.

Slafkovsky is 6th on the team. And all five guys ahead of him have more PP time per game. Here are the 15 forwards in order:

1. Caufield 3.50
2. Suzuki 3.35
3. Dach 3.06
4. Hoffman 2.13
5. Monahan 2.09
6. Slafkovsky 1.80
7. Dvorak 1.69
8. Gallagher 1.66
9. Anderson 1.60
10. Drouin 1.49
11. Dadonov 0.54
12. Evans 0.43
13. Pezzetta 0.00
14. Pitlick 0.00
15. Armia 0.00

By the way, since Slaf is a winger, I would compare him to other wingers, not centremen who usually get more points.

Pacioretty
age 20 = 1.54
age 21 = 1.43
age 22 = 2.18

Andrei Svechnikov at age 18 got 1.85 points per 60 minutes.

Anyone who thinks Slafkovsky does not merit his place in the NHL seems off-base.

Stutzle was around 1.95/60 in his 1st 20 games.

This is a feel out season for Slaf to see what kind of pace the NHL has. He's making gains and gaining confidence a little bit each game. You can see it. The real evaluation for me comes when he is 19 next season after he has one season under his belt. I think that's when we start to see his real potential

I hope they send Slaf to the WJC. I wouldn't be upset if they don't. But I think it will help solve two things at once. One of which is that this could be a real good experience for Slaf.

The other is that it can help the Habs with their overabundance of forwards. Sending Slaf there would at least give the Canadiens one less forward to carry. And if Habs end up losing players to injuries, they can turn to Laval to call someone up (Pitlick, RHP, Ylonen, Richard & Stephens could be options).

It's crazy that there were guys who said right before the draft that Armia and Slaf were even

Great stat; but to be fair - spots 7 to 15 all suck (minus Anderson)

I'm personally OK with the 5/5 usage but I want him to stick on the 2nd PP Unit. This season is all about confidence/momentum and gaining experience.

The real test is how he evaluates himself after this season ends and where he focus his energy in the offseason and how he is ready to jump forward next year. Obsession to improve is a huge part of development.

Generating Points matters less this season vs him being effective with the puck and without the puck. Of course I'd like to see him with 20 goals and 50 pts but I'm not going to evaluate him that way. Driving play where he can and working with others while he makes good decisions with the puck is important. Laying out a good foundation in terms of puck management is important and once he gets comfortable with that, he can be used more in offensive roles/ice time.

Going from Evans to Dvorak is a great upgrade. Too bad at this point I don't even know who's better between Gally and Pezz.
As much as Gally has regressed, Pezzetta is one of the worst players in the NHL.

I like Slaf on the 2nd unit PP. His eagerness to have the puck is great. But the beaver taps need to stop in the pros. Just take what’s given to you as a rookie.

Also he has 7 years to get as good as Tage Thompson

I heard Dadonov is looking at a 4 year full ntc extension too - noooooooot

Rookie filter with a min of 10 games played... Can he close the gap and be in the top 5 when the season ends?

One of the lowest amount of ice time from anybody in that top 20. Shot total is low... I'd like to see him shoot just a bit more.

Slaf is on a lower PPG than even Jack Hughes.

My point is that I think something has to change with is usage. It's concerning that he's literally at the bottom (outside of 2OA Reinhart who was sent down after a 9 game taster) so far. People think Lafreniere is a bust already... he was drafted just two years ago.

I understand your concern but please don't be disingenuous. You're a better poster than that.

Jack Hughes in his first year paced for 28.222 points over 82 games.
Slafkovsky is on pace for 27.333 points over 82 games.

There's less than one points of difference. If Slafkovsky keeps the pace this is 100% inconsequential. Slafkovsky looks good imo for his age and i think he looks better than JK did even if he wont do more points. And with Farrell incoming we will need big wingers like Slaf and Dach. Farrell is pretty good only question mark is his size. But the skill is there. Caufield, Dach, Slafkovsky and Farrell could but a great top 4 on the wing.

I understand the concern of some posters but imo moving forward we might be lacking only a 2nd line center for our top 6. The big question mark will be the PP quarterback. I love our young dmen but i don'T think any of them have tthe potential to become a Subban or Markov.

One thing I do think is quite funny about the concern about point totals is that Slafkovsky has made two crisp 10/10 cross-ice passes to Anderson in the last 3 games which Anderson just completely flubbed, but by focusing so much on raw points, those passes are diminished in importance relative to two pretty chintzy assists off a flukey deflection and a seeing-eye wrister from Xhekaj.

I don't bring that up to say that he didn't contribute to those assists, but neither of the plays that actually resulted in assists for him were particularly impressive, while the two most impressive passes he's made all year resulted in nothing because Anderson handles the puck like a live grenade. I'm not trying to be too much of a "watch the games" crusader because production matters at the end of the day, but I think that's one of the major pitfalls of hyperfocusing on raw counting stats in a situation like this where he's being brought along slowly and isn't playing with particularly high-end linemates.

I think if anything the fact he looks pretty decent with limited ice time and minutes is more frustrating , would love to see the kid play some more , MSL is a tease!

I’m sorry but this doesn’t make much sense:

There would be no better way to evaluate where Slafkovsky truly is in his development than by letting him loose against players of his own age group.

Having skipped the most recent World Junior tournament this summer to prepare for the NHL season, getting Slafkovsky to measure up against his peers would help give the Canadiens a better view of what’s improved and what still needs to be worked on in his game.

We are developing a pro player not a junior player. You get junior or minor pro players to play in NHL exhibition games or 9 game tryouts to evaluate where their development is. It’s also where we see what’s improved and what’s to be worked on. Not the other way around.

I don't really care much about him going to the World Juniors or not. There are merits to either decision, he's learning and progressing in the NHL as is so keeping him with the Habs is fine, but playing first line minutes internationally could be a worthwhile change of pace too. The thing I don't really get is the idea that it would tell us where his development would be. We know from his U18s and Finnish U20 play that he's graduated from U20 competition.

If he plays well it doesn't tell us anything we didn't already know. If he struggles it doesn't really matter either, of all fanbases we should have a very good understanding of how WJC hype is overblown after watching Poehling/Romanov get hyped to the stratosphere while people freaked out about Caufield/Suzuki based on that tournament.

We are developing a pro player not a junior player.
Yep. His peers are in the NHL, not in junior.

Great post.

Guarantee our coaching staff, which has constantly repeated the mantra of "process, over results", have noticed this.

I understand hes a NHl player and all but robbing a player of a WJC appearance and potential medal is disgusting. I'd personally be very mad.

Every players best memory is SCF -> WJC gold -> Kid being born
