They're the most up-to-date stat and I specifically said I'd like for him to score more so to change the PPG rate. I think you people are a bit too defensive and protective of your own pre-determined conclusion (Habs Prospect Will Thrive No Matter What, And Any Criticism Is Done In Bad Faith). After the mega busts of Galchenyuk and Kotkaniemi, I'm surprised you'd still keep the same posture. Nothing is guaranteed, especially not the success of a Habs forward draftee. For every Caufield (who was suffering BIG TIME last year under Ducharme) we have fifteen other promising forwards who went nowhere.
The stats you cited are meaningless. The fact that they are up-to-date meaningless stats does not make them meaningful. My pre-determined conclusion is that Slaf has great potential to be very very good in a few years. Not sure how that's being protective but OK.

Slaf is on a lower PPG than even Jack Hughes.

My point is that I think something has to change with is usage. It's concerning that he's literally at the bottom (outside of 2OA Reinhart who was sent down after a 9 game taster) so far. People think Lafreniere is a bust already... he was drafted just two years ago.

💯 % I agree with the usage being the issue.
While I appreciate bringing along slowly he needs an upgrade with regards to the players he plays with.

You're clearly taking the pessimistic approach. You're getting back lash cause it's getting obsessive. Optimistic vs pessimistic wars are stupid.

What matters here is facilitating his development. Some of us wondered if he would bust out right away but it didn't happen. It's going to be a process like KK and it's up to Slaf to overcome the development challenges while MSL monitors how he handles the opportunity. He won't be spoiled but he will get chances to perform.

Looking at this stats and trying to gauge his potential is very premature. He has a great shot and his vision/skill is clearly there. But has not learned how to use his body leverage well yet. Learning that area first will be the biggest factor in him reaching his ceiling. He can gain a lot more confidence and put up more points if he can use his body leverage better. It will be like a light switch turned on where he realizes the value from it.

He's on a good track. Lets just sit back and watch and we can look at your "stats" approach at the end of this season and then see where he is at in his 2nd season. The gains in confidence/momentum as he gets more opportunity is a big factor

A 25 point pace is on the very low-end of the Immediately-started-in-the-NHL cohort, dating back 22 years.
So what?
Looking at Slaf's stats after 13 games and making an assumption this is it.... is a statistical blasphemy. :D

Edit: I see other posters above 👆 made the same point.

(and on another note: the PPG rate shouldn't be unduly affected by the GP -- it isn't cherry picking to look at PPG rate)

My "pre-determined conclusion" was that his TOI has to go up and his linemates have to improve. He's our 'crown jewel' and he's playing shotgun next to scrubs. He might as well be playing with AHLers.

Both good points. I think he can easily pip in a multi-point game with better linemates. A few of those would come a long way toward changing the outlo

It would be great if he picked up a couple of multi-point games because he’s currently on pace for an abysmal 25pt season. Lower rookie season ppg than Galchenyuk and Kotkaniemi even.

Hopefully he kicks off with Moneyhands Gallagher and gives them both a reason for us to see them both stay in the NHL.
You are making a statistical mistake of extrapolating 13 games for an entre season.

You know Stamkos was at 0.307 after 13 games and at 0.235 after 17. Lafreniere was at 0.08 after 13 and 0.06 after 16. Slows starts statistically is nothing unheard of. I didnt bother looking at others, those were the 1st 2 i looks at.

13 games is all we have so far, I'll update the table as the season goes on. There is no bias implied.

Unless you don't want us to have any quantifiable information on hand to discuss our prized 1OA draftee I don't see what the harm is in having the best-available information to inform our discussions.

My conclusion is simple: since they (1) rushed him to the NHL and (2) kept him past 9 games they should (3) play him as much as possible. The 'promotion' to the Dvorak line is undoubtedly a good thing. I hope he has a few multi-point games and makes his mark.

At the end of the day, people can bitch and moan about stats and linemates and etc....
For me, it's about the eye test.
To my very untrained eye, I see a guy who is NOT a defensive liability like many young players are.
In his limited time, he seems to be able to read the play properly and not get caught out.
He seems to have a very good hard shot, and a good nose for the net.
His "battle" ability is very good, but sometimes he seems to take awkward positions into the battle.... This causes him to lose the battle as he is off balance and falls. --> Definitely something he can improve on!

I can only envision him improving slightly each game, and hopefully getting a better shot on the 3rd line or even the 2nd line.
There is a reason that he's still being protected.
I trust the management and coach Marty to make the right decisions.

I think it's time to stop fighting over what he "is" and start watching and enjoying what he will become.

their crown jewel 18yr old

Hate to break it to you, but the Habs crown jewel(s) are a pair and already playing on the first line.

Overall concensus projected him as a second liner. I know you're madly in love with his rags-to-riches story mirroring your own path and sense of grandeur, also equally madly in love with your own ridiculous pet theory about what drives people to success, but the fact remains that the two best rookies we've had in recent years had much steeper upward trajectories than Slaf and both come from middle-class or modest families. Just like many prodigies have.

At this early point of his development, one thing I can definately point out in terms of improvement, is his play when a teammate has the puck in the offensive zone. He floats around and doesn't drive the net or try to get open for a pass in a high danger area.

He's fine when the opponent has the puck, and he's great when he has the puck. He's got good vision and passing, a good shot, and plenty of speed and acceleration.

When he learns to better support his teammates in puck possession or drive to high-danger areas to receive a pass, he's going to take his game to another level. That's the moment when he'll have a permanent spot on the top 6, no questions asked.

13 games is too early to make a conclusion on anything. We can argue about how he’s been used or if he should’ve started in the minors but throwing up a spreadsheet right now like that is basically concerned trolling.

Gotta defend the terrible position from 6+ months ago even though the guy you wanted can't even get 6 minutes TOI in the NHL.

Slaf has the higher floor and higher ceiling right now.

Wright enthusiasts in complete and utter shambles.

I dont know if using the argument that Wright is being mishandled is actually very good to support your opinion..?

I mean, your guy isnt even in the league, so I guess youre even more wrong then? Kinda dumb, huh?

After 13 NHL games from Juraj Slafkovsky, my eyes test see:

- A very good protection puck.
- Great hands.
- Great skating ability.
- Great shot.
- Great hockey IQ.
- Great defensive play.
- Great passing ability.

Cons:
Need more Ice time to show his full talent.

He is a very good hockey player to watch, i'm really impressed by his defensive play for a guy who only played 13 games, on draft day, I was high on him, but after 13 NHL games, i'm 100% conviced that we have a stud with him.

Is this McDavid you're talking about?
