This is good. Dvorak is a step up for sure and Gally can do what Gally does. Hopefully means more ice-time for Slaf and is an opportunity for him to show more with better mates. If Slaf is playing on one of the top two lines by the end of the year, then that would be great.
Indeed.

People need to realize that most top draft picks develop within the NHL for several years.

I was looking at the 2017 re-draft thread. Suzuki has progressed of course, and we see it first-hand, but he is far from the only one who in his D+6 season is still improving.

We can see the same with the 2018 and 2019 drafts, where players are now in their D+5 and D+4.

2018 draftees Dahlin, Svechnikov and Brady (3 of the top 4 picks) are over 1.0ppg now in their D+5, FOR THE FIRST TIME.

From the 2019 class, Hughes, Zegras, Dach, Caufield, Cozens and more are having their best season to date in their D+4.

It would be great if he picked up a couple of multi-point games because he’s currently on pace for an abysmal 25pt season. Lower rookie season ppg than Galchenyuk and Kotkaniemi even.

Hopefully he kicks off with Moneyhands Gallagher and gives them both a reason for us to see them both stay in the NHL.

Progression is not linear. Whatever Chucky and Kotka did at 18 is inconsequential to what Slaf will become.

At 18, Joe Thornton had 7 points in 70 games.

He will have to play with players who can get generate more than 1 pts in 37 games (that's the total of pts and game played for Evans, Pitlick, Pezz and Armia).

MSL, Hughes, Gorton, Habs scouts, know more hockey than all of us in HFBoard's. So they know what they are doing with Slaf more than any of us.
Has to be the biggest affront to a significant posting contingent in here. In before someone lambastes your “appeal to authority.” :sarcasm:

Slaf for the amount of ice time he is receiving and the players he is playing with has done well.

Armia really fell off a cliff. He was a respectable middle six forward for a time.
When was that time? For me, it was the physical force he was in the COVID playoffs but beyond that, it looks to me to have been a whole lot of blips sandwiched between disappearing acts.

This is your classic super skilled big body who can’t or won’t raise his performance to the level of his talent.

He was averaging 3rd line/low end 2nd line production before Ducharme. I think all the injuries just finally got to him (like it did Drouin).

If you have to dig back over 20 years to find a PPG case comparable to Slaf, be my guest. For me this is a big red flag and it isn't entirely his fault. As @morhilane said, he needs not-rubbish linemates.

As for Chucky and Kotka, if we can now safely point out their flaws with the comfort of time -- it should be a concern that Slaf still has moment where he looks lost out there and chasing the play. It's very likely this was a step too big for him (and our AHL team not suited to helping a Raw Project) so now MSL is stuck keeping him in a limited role. Hopefully he puts up some points with Gallagher and Dvorak, that would be sweet.

Has to be the biggest affront to a significant posting contingent in here. In before someone lambastes your “appeal to authority.” :sarcasm:
Respected NHL veteran Marc Bergevin, long-time NHL coach Michel Therrien, NHL scout extraordinaire Trevor Timmins also steered the development of Galchenyuk and (swap Therrien for the even more respected Julien) Kotkaniemi. It's a meaningless appeal to authority simply because we saw, see, and will see NHL professionals make mistakes all the damn time. If their handling of Slaf is correct, then that's super -- time will tell.

Jack Hughes had 21 points.

Slaf is on a lower PPG than even Jack Hughes.

He's 18. The major hurdle most players have coming into the league is processing the speed of the game. This can take 1 or 2 years as much as it can take up to 7 to 10 years in some cases to fully adapt.

Kotka almost doubled Hughes's production at 18. That should be an indication that your red flag is raised prematurely.

Why not include 3rd overalls? Why not include a full scope of curbs of development? Why not simply also include outsiders that became stars and look at their progression too? By limiting the scope, you are making this about draft position rather than an actual objective outlook on development and progression.

Drafting position is inconsequential once drafted. You also held back from going further down the years and land Nail Yakupov in those collumns, who beat almost everyone of those recent players at 18, but completely busted out.

Hughes had a higher PPG than Slaf does right now.

We don't need to get into it about the 18-year-old-in-the-NHL thing, I was against rushing Slaf to begin with. Now Slaf is trending toward a low-end output. Does it predict anything? No... not at this moment it doesn't. But the thing with red flags isn't to say something bad WILL happen, but that something bad CAN happen. Maybe Slaf will follow the Joe Thornton (drafted in 1997) trajectory but you'd be kidding if you think there weren't concerns about Joe in the 97-98 season either.

I looked at the highest picked forward of every year, since (with a few exceptions) they started in the NHL immediately. There aren't too many others who started in the NHL immediately after the draft, I don't think this would change the look at the list. Slaf would still trend to the low-end.

25 points isn’t abysmal. He’s 18… no big deal. He’s played reasonably well.

Personally though I’d like to see him loaned out to play in the Juniors tournament.

A 25 point pace is on the very low-end of the Immediately-started-in-the-NHL cohort, dating back 22 years.

He’s played… 13 games. No reason to be concerned with anything.

The only thing I’d like is more ice for him. And that’s why at the start I said I’d rather him in the minors. But he hasn’t looked out of place in the NHL.

Production hopefully will come but his skating, while still needs development, is miles ahead of KK and Chuck. I may sound like an idiot 5 years from now, but I’m going to say Slaf will be a far better player than either (at everyone’s respective age 23-24 season). Heck, he’ll be better than both in 5 years regardless of age comparisons.

Slafkovsky is on pace for 25 points this season. That's dead last among 1st picked forwards' rookie seasons since 22 years ago.

He needs better linemates and more TOI.
He needs those things to get more points and satisfy those who look for that. But it does not mean he would not progress at all if he stays at 10-11 minutes per game for another few games.

But I personally do think he should be given some top 9 time and see what he can do with it.

Big deal. We’re 13 games in…
I agree. Also, a 25 point pace when 75% of his points are goals, while assists are hard to get when playing with guys who have not scored at all with ANYONE else passing to them either, isn't so bad, for a start.

Slaf is on a lower PPG than even Jack Hughes.

My point is that I think something has to change with is usage. It's concerning that he's literally at the bottom (outside of 2OA Reinhart who was sent down after a 9 game taster) so far. People think Lafreniere is a bust already... he was drafted just two years ago.

LIes, Damn Lies, and Statistics. You really think it's reasonable to compare Slaf's first 13 games with those other guys' entire first seasons? This is the kind of use of stats that looks like cherry-picking to prove your pre-determined conclusion.

Why do you think they might be limiting his ice time at this time, and do you have a reasonable guesstimate of when it might increase?
Because he’s 18 in the best men’s league in the world with game intensity just about to ramp up to high gear & then ultra high gear post deadline for the playoff push.

Last thing the Habs need is to potentially increase probability of injury by exposing their crown jewel 18yr old because they ramped up his TOI and worn him down too early.

Load management due to grind of NHL regular season schedule, is of extreme importance, for the entire roster, moreso for rookies & 35+ players, and especially for an 18-yr old.

Habs org is managing Slaf just fine IMO…. slow & steady wins the race

They're the most up-to-date stat and I specifically said I'd like for him to score more so to change the PPG rate. I think you people are a bit too defensive and protective of your own pre-determined conclusion (Habs Prospect Will Thrive No Matter What, And Any Criticism Is Done In Bad Faith). After the mega busts of Galchenyuk and Kotkaniemi, I'm surprised you'd still keep the same posture. Nothing is guaranteed, especially not the success of a Habs forward draftee. For every Caufield (who was suffering BIG TIME last year under Ducharme) we have fifteen other promising forwards who went nowhere.

(and on another note: the PPG rate shouldn't be unduly affected by the GP -- it isn't cherry picking to look at PPG rate)

My "pre-determined conclusion" was that his TOI has to go up and his linemates have to improve. He's our 'crown jewel' and he's playing shotgun next to scrubs. He might as well be playing with AHLers.

He needs those things to get more points and satisfy those who look for that. But it does not mean he would not progress at all if he stays at 10-11 minutes per game for another few games.

Both good points. I think he can easily pip in a multi-point game with better linemates. A few of those would come a long way toward changing the outlook.

13 games is way too small to know anything man… he’s looked fine on the ice and that’s what matters at this stage.
