Kulak only became special for what he fetched when we traded him.

Otherwise, in the infamous words of @Apoplectic Habs Fan during a GDT:

“Is that Kulak or a turnstile?”

In a few years, we won't be able to wrap our heads around the fact that they managed to turn Kulak into Lane Hutson.

I appreciate the sarcasm but I think you fail to realize that both Harris and Gulhe are avg. over 20min a game playing top 4 and are having a significant impact, they could play top 4 on a few NHL team not just the habs. Going to AHL would do nothing for them they would have the same role compare to Slaf who is the least used Player on the team (11:02 including 20sec of PP) even Pezz avg more time in is one game. Slaf has the ability he need ice time to develop those ability riding the bench in the NHL isn’t better than playing in the 1st line / 1PP in AHL when you are 18yo and developing… he doesn’t need to stay in the AHL for the reste of the season just until he gain some more expirence or we figured out how to dump a couple guys and can give him top 9minute+
Why? He is our 3rd best goal scorer.

Do you know how you improve in sports or board games or esports? Play against better than yourself and you'll get better.

Slaf is fine playing 8 to 14minutes a game all year long.

Better than 18-19 in the AHL. Thats why the management is doing it that way.

He score 3 goals not of which were particularly special, he has not generated much outside of it and isn’t getting much playing time.
If playing against better than your self is how to get better how come we don’t see everyone getting better, why aren’t all 18yo in the NHL, why do players that dominate lower level continue to improve… You get better by pushing you limits and staying motivated to continue, AHL will be significant competition and somewhere he doesn’t have to hold back and push is abilities to the limits unlike the NHL he playing well within is limits trying to not make mistake.

Not too many players have the shot to score the three goals he scored. And, he's been setting up his mediocre linemates who can't finish.

Last night he made a nice play to give Armia a nice chance in the slot, but it was Armia.

Never said he didn’t have abilities or couldn’t make any plays, you can see flashes but he can he can’t do it with any consistency. I just believe that playing 4th line minute is not how you develop a 1st player, that probably also why you don’t see it happen very often… Scoring 3 goals is great but ultimately is Slaf doesn’t become a impact it is meaningless…

I'd like to see him with Monahan.

Well now we have to wait to see what they decide to do with him. Will the organization come out fast and say he's staying or let people wait till the next game?

More air punching in this thread, too.

"I spent all summer talking about his hockeydb page and how Shane Wright is more NHL ready!!!!! Now he has 3 goals and Wright can't even see the ice!!?!?!?"
This is a semi-clever trick — notice “how Shane Wright is more NHL ready” was slyly inserted into this? One problem, nobody said that! Especially not Shane Wright from Jrs in comparison to Slafkovsky who played against grown men. In fact, most agreed Slaf was more likely to be able to hit the ground running in terms of physically keeping up.

As to the haters and losers, god bless you. Maybe one day you’ll understand criticism of his handling does not mean dislike of the player.

This is where I’m at but on the other hand I am happy to give credit to Slaf: he looks more confident by the game. Confidence is a major part of playmaking (which is a big mark against him up to now, imo) so this is all good and positive development even putting aside the goal last night.

Overall, 3pts in 9gp is a low PPG for a 1st OA rookie season. I have a little analysis written on it, coming soon. But he is improving rapidly so I doubt he will finish with a 0.3 ppg, and that’s a good thing.

“He nEeDs tO Be iN LAvaL”.

The usual suspects can keep saying that, and he’ll keep scoring goals in the NHL.

Some people were really that mad about the team not picking Shane Wright, that they can’t even enjoy watching this kid or cheer for him. They have to nit pick every little mistake he makes, and borderline hope for him to not do well.

Hopefully as he keeps scoring goals, they’ll become more and more quiet, and then they’ll pretend they supported him all along, as is the norm on HF.

He’s only gonna get better and better.

I don't know whom you are speaking about ? Everybody is happy when he scores.

I was not a fan of the pick (Nemec fan here :D ) and I thought he would benefit more from playing 20 minutes a night and PP1 in Laval but I am happy if the way they have chosen is the best way :)

I cant believe it's still a debate. Outside of Caufield and Suzuki and now Dach, he is our most dangerous offensive player. All three of his goals were difficult shots. No tap ins. No stupid bounces. Shots, that he buried.

Not only will he develop better playing with rhe big club, he has EARNED a spot on the big club. What does it say to the kid sending him down when he is out playing a bunch of plugs on this team. He deserves it and has earned it. I'm good with reduced minutes and progressively adding more minutes and responsibilities as the season goes on. If he gains confidence around the 40 game mark and gets on a roll, I truly believe he could challenge for the Calder.

Keep him up!!!

It's not "Low" at all, it's the average. Hischier, Hughes, etc. etc. we haven't had a 18 years 1st overall scoring 50+ pts in a long time because they are very rare. Bedard will probably do it, but don't expect 80 pts from Bedard either.

It’s a matter of ice time and PP time too.

Can’t compare Lafreniere rookie season playing on the 3rd line with basically no PP time to someone who plays a lot right from the jump

This. But the point remains, we haven't had a 50 pts 1st OA in a long time.
When is the last time you've checked? Less than five years ago Hirscher had 52 points. The avg ppg is 0.691, so unfortunately 0.333 is not average. Beniers had 9 in 8 just last year.

Below is a simple list of the highest ranked forward draft pick of the past 22 years and their stats during their inaugural season in the NHL. Whenever a G or D was picked, I went with the next first forward. As it turned out, it was quite easy to spot that it was rather rare for a non-forward to be picked 1OA, and in all cases the best forward was picked at the lowest 2OA.

In all cases except 2004 Ovechkin (lockout) and 2000 Dany Heately the 1OA started the season in the NHL immediately after their draft, so if we compare Slaf to this cohort it isn't unusual for him to start in the NHL. The problem is when people claim that Slaf is treated like any other 1OA except when it comes to production/performance expectations from 1OAs, in that case they scoff and say he was never meant to be compared to other 1OAs.

Red highlight = lowest 10% performers as per PPG
Yellow highlight = above average performers as per PPG
Green highlight = top 10% performers as per PPG

fun fact if you remove Crosby, Ovechkin, McDavid, and Beniers the average ppg is 0.569/48pts in aa 82 game season. Slaf is on pace for 27 as of writing, I think he will finish with a pace of 35ish if he keeps improving which gets him in the range of Lafreniere, J Hughes, Svechnikov, and E Staal -- not bad company.

Agree, he has set up his linemates quite a few times, but they can’t finish! Should have at least 3 assists. Kid HAS to stay!!!!!

I'll start off saying I couldn't care less if Slaf is one of our top 9 or 12 forwards, it's his development that matters.

He is passing my eye test, but I can't tell whether he should be in the AHL.

So for people with a better eye, how is he different from us keeping up Galchenyuk and KK?
